AMD 8 core, or Intel i5

Hi gents, some well constructed feedback. It is clear i5 has more support from you guys.

Answers to you questions as follows:
MY CURRENT BUILD
AMD Phenom II x6 1045T
ASROCK M3A770DE motherboard
12GB 1333MHz RAM
MSI TWINFROZRII HD7850 GPU
CORSAIR 750W 80+ Certified PSU

MY ASPIRED BUDGET
CPU/MB = <£350 Intel or AMD
GPU = <£400 to £450 was thinking an NVIDIA GTX980 but open to feedback on AMD cards
RAM will be carryover as it is 1600MHz down clocked as the AMD CPU crashes @ 1600MHz due to memory controller being overclocked.

I do not intend to overclock but maydo in the future.

THE GAMES I LIKE PLAYING
FPS killing floor 2, Battlefied 2, COD, Evolve
MMORPG such as Guild Wars, Elder Scrolls, Star Wars in the future.

What monitor do you have/use?
I'm thinking it may be worth waiting a short while to see what real improvements broadwell i5 has, as your specs are ok really.
£350 would get you an i5 a cooler and a mobo
£450 will get you a damn good GPU but might as well wait until AMD 300 series are out to compare.

Either way, good luck !

i5 - better upgrade path, better single core performance, lower multicore but simply due to being able to go to an i7k in the future or so, I'd take the i5 at this point in time

Also, one thing to note is that right now you can get an Asus 290x for little over £200 on T.W.O. deal.
That would be an awesome upgrade over your 7850.

The GTX 980 is around twice the price of the 290x but apparently draws about half as much power....but it is nowhere near twice as good - it is better apparently, but not by much.

No point waiting for Broadwell - it will probably fit into any mobo the OP buys for Haswell; if the gains are good it'll be an upgrade option, if not no problem.

i5 - better upgrade path, ...

All true, but don't raise the OPs expectations too much, there'll still be just one line of CPUs to upgrade to (compatible 1150 Broadwells). After that, new mobo as usual (thanks Intel).

Have you seen the price of the i5 atm, - its £194.00 on a T.W.O. so normally 200 sheets....WOW!
I seem to recall them being around 155 sheets when new out so may be well worth waiting.

Hi would my phenom ii x6 1045T bottleneck a Radeon 290x?

The phenom should be able to handle 1600 ram, you might just need to increase the cpu-nb voltage. 1.2 to 1.3v.

12gb is a funny amount of ram. Is that 2 x 4gb + 2 x 2gb sticks?

What is T.W.O. chaps? Google says nada.

I have 3 x 4GB. I had 8GB but started getting issues with Titanfall and COD Advanced Warfare.

I use a 23" 1080p monitor

Current i5 bundle and a new 390 would easily handle 1080p gaming, your next upgrade would then be to get a better monitor...(imo)

Pull the 3rd ram stick and run 8GB in dual channel.

Best to have a look around at benchmarks etc... before committing to buying anything.
Maybe get a new GPU now and see how it goes, then have a look at Skylake when it finally emerges.

^^^ REALLY ?

He means the CPU for a small form factor build for which the only AMD CPU options were APUs and where the target audience is people wanting to spend loads - doesn't make AMD any more or less relevant in the more modest budget space (though it is of course a shame that they don't have their own option to compete in this space right now)
