AMD 8 core, or Intel i5

If you want the machine to be suitable for gaming at good settings in 5 years time then I'd go for the i5. Looking at the link below, Intel processors from 2010 have held up better with time than their nearest AMD competitors, even with the higher core counts of the AMD cpus. How much of an improvement in gaming performance DX12 will bring to AMD cpus is just conjecture at this point.

I normally don't post in threads like these as i don't have enough knowledge on Intel but I thought I would share my amd experience.
I built my computer last year and did it on a bit of a budget so decided to go For the fx8350 and a 770gtx 4gb. This was more than enough for me at the time as I was only playing skyrim, command and conquer etc so was very happy with it. Oh and I still plaY @ 1080p and don't plan to change that.

Throughout the last year however I have added another 770gtx 4gb, changed the board to a ROG crosshair formula z, and overclocked the cpu to 4.6ghz to enable me to play more recent and more demanding games at high/very high settings with a solid 60fps.

Now considering the initial cost, plus the costs throughout the year to get more performance, I could have gone Intel at the start and would have had better performance sooner but my fx really has served me well and i am still happy with it :)

In saying that, now that I am financially, in a much better position, for my next upgrade next year, I'm going Intel.
