AMD 9*** series soon?

a lot of you guys thinking its just going to be a small step up then?

It can only be a smaller step up if it's 28nm.
Unless they also clock the cores pretty high (Much closer to their limits) I mean a 7970 can gain about 20% now from that almost, then with the extra cores it could be like 40% more, which still isn't over the top.

It's a shame that's all we expect nowadays even when changing architecture the initial gains aren't huge. It's even worse with CPU's.

CPU growth has stalled as well hasn't it just think of the money saved? Would I be foolish to upgrade a 5850 to a 7850/70 now then?

CPU growth while it has slowed isn't quite the same.
You add cores to a GPU you're going to see gains.
You add cores to a CPU and you're not going to see gains unless the software is made to.

Does anybody else worry about the time frame aspect of all this.
I mean if AMD are making us wait 22 months since the 7970/50 for their new cards and they are still on 28nm just how long will we have to wait until they release some 20nm cards. We know the process will be ready and rearing to go by the middle of next year, are they really going to go with 22 months then only 8 or so. Really doesn't make much sense to me, if these cards have been ready for a while they could have made more money by releasing them earlier, an extra 3 or 4 months worth of sales would have easily outstripped the boost they will get by releasing with BF4.

The only reason I think amd have waited so long is because Nvidia products have not been that great or powerful this round and the ones like gtx780 and titan are in a different price bracket. I would still take a 7970 over a gtx770 without much thought as I think the 384 bit memory bus and 3gb are worth having. The 7950 is still the card to have in it's price bracket for the same reasons. Down the scale it's pretty close though .

Why would AMD bother pushing the envelope with their new range when NV didn't?

The new AMD's will be a match for, or slightly beat the 780, and will cost a fortune, that's thr wat the GPU market is now. Incremental upgrades at a huge price tag.

I'm not a fan of this tit for tat release of GPUs that we see now.

nVidia flagship....some time...AMD flagship...some time....nVidia flagship.....

Synchronised releases from both nVidia and AMD at least made it a little more interesting, more competitive and the consumer could pick a side easily.

Now it's both sides being able to bide their time with releases, milk it dry for £££ and work on something while the other side does the same a few months later.

It makes for good business but for any enthusiast it's a bit of a crapper.

9970 will be at 780 or slightly higher levels. Absolutely no way it's going to be significantly faster.

Me neither, but it's the way it is. Yep, it'll slightly beat it at best, and probably on price too, especially when you consider they will bundle BF4 with it.

I think the way releases are now, they're making SLI/XFIRE a good option.

I'll just buy a 7950, or wait for whatever the 7950 replacement is. I'm not paying north of £400 for a GPU, that's not really much faster than a 780.

The top end of the GPU market is ludicrous at the moment.

I can buy a PS4 for much less than a 780 costs.

Isn't it the 690 that's cheaper to make?
AMD's parts are more expensive than Nvidia's (GK104)

To be truthful I'm unsure on that, the basis I was using was that both cards cost roughly the same yet the GPU's on the 7990 retailed individually for less than the ones on the 690, also the cooler on the 690 looks to be higher quality and thus more expensive (of course looks can be deceiving).

It's because Nvidia are making a killing, they're margins on the GK104 are pretty decent, AMD won't be making as much money per, and they need to sell them cheaper due to Nvidia's image.

Yeah what I was trying to say was, instead of pricing the 7990 like two 7970's they priced it to match the 690 (which was priced like two 680's), they could have priced it cheaper and still made as much profit as they would have two 7970's but instead went for the big score which leads me to believe if they produce a 780 rival it will be priced like the 780 and not undercut it.
