AMD Athlon 3800+ Dual Core AM2 , is it any good, i've ssen this offer and i'm not sure if its worth it, my friends bought 1 and says its "ok" let me know what u all think

i run photoshop, convert dvd's , play games etc,

thanks

Price it up and compare it to a 6300 C2D setup. If at all possible stretch to the 6300 as it is a good bit faster.

It all depends on how much of a bargain that 3800 is.

If building a system from scratch then just go C2D.

Its far faster in every area of home computing.

sorry guys, its this one, all built

£329.97 inc VAT
(£280.82 ex VAT)

AMD Athlon 3800+ Dual Core AM2
1GB Memory
160GB Hard Drive SATA

DVD±RW (+R double layer)
NVIDIA GeForce 6100
Sound card - 7.1 channel surround
Keyboard,Mouse
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition

do you think its worth it, or would it be better for me to buy the parts and build one? (i've build pcs in *** past), i want a pc taht will perform wonders for as cheap as possible (i want a decent processor this time, as last time i had 3400+ and i wasnt that impressed)
-Thanks oweneades

No worries :)

As for the spec it looks ok for the price although bare in mind the geforce 6100 is onboard not a deditcated gpu. Plus it will probably have zero overclocking potential - although of course it would depend what motherboard was installed (if thats what you want).

if your capable of building this yourself, you can do it for £294inc VAT with a 200gig drive and a clockable board but that does not include the OS. so id say it wasnt a bad deal your getting, although im not much of a fan of XP media center...

6300
DS3
6400 DDR2

Will be twice the speed of that x2 system for simialr price.

cant be built for the same money. by my calculations it would cost him an extra £90 above what he is paying for his full system and he would have to build it himself and thats provided he used a cheaper motherboard than you specified.

6300 DS3 Geil 6400 Combo £314.86

You can get the DS3 with onboard GFX like the AMD spec

Add £18 for the DVD RW
Add £30 for 160 gig SATA

£362 for the components

I said similar price not the same.

30 quid more than the AMD spec and yet will floor a FX62 in performance when tweaked. :D

Add a cheap case and XP and you are away.

6300 ~ £126
DS3 ~ £90
1 gig generic ddr2 ~ £75

Total ~ £291

Plus at a rough guess

Case (minimum Antec NSK4400) ~ £50
200gig Seagate ~ £50
CD/DVD ~ £20

Plus throw in say £40 for a minimum graphics card (if you don't go 2nd hand) and say £20 for mouse and keyboard, plus £70 for a copy of Windows gives you a total of around £540. That's at OC prices though and I've assumed he needds eveything bar a screen and speakers as they weren't included in the original (Dell I suspect) spec. Could ditch the DS3, go for an ASrock and save about £50 though if you weren't bothered about overclocking

So no, it wouldn't be a smiliar price.

do you live in some strange part of england where VAT and delivery from OCUK doesnt apply ???

£362 for the components is not correct.

nor is £30 for the drive and £18 for the DVD drive

£37.59 for a hard drive
21.56 for a DVD drive

takes you to £374.01

then Microsoft Windows XP Media Centre 2005 Edition - OEM - 1Pk (M93-00200) £77.54

then cheap mouse
Logitech B58 Optical Wheel Mouse (Black) - OEM £5.86

then cheap keyboard
Logitech Deluxe Keyboard (Black) - OEM £6.45

then a cheap case + generic PSU from a competitor
£22

total :£494.38 inc vat and delivery.

similar price??? your not even close, not unless your idea of similar is infact 50% more expensive.

@PeteLucky7

His first spec does not include a 200 gig HDD so why spec it?

Why does he need a 50 quid case?

Why does he need a GFX card?

His first spec has onboard GFX.

The DS3 can be had with onboard GFX like his original spec.

He doesnn't have top spend 520 to go conroe so syop spouting carp!

why quote media edition? Fist spec is but does he need it?

He can get XP home for 58.74 saving him 20 quid.

he can get an asrock mobo for 50 saving him 50 quid

so thats 70 quid saved already.

Point is he can have a system double the speed for not double the outlay.

:D

C2D makes sense!

a) my mistake, I thought he said 200 gig in a brain fart. Knock a few quid off for that then.

b) Ok, if you fancy buying a £90 mobo and a £120 cpu then sticking it in a £20 case and psu combo go ahead.

c) I wasn't aware that the DS3 had onboard gfx. However, even if it has, it seems stupid buying a chip that can "thrash the pants off an fx-62" then limit it with onboard gfx. However, drop the £40 I guesstimated for that if you want, and you're still looking at £500 or so.

the DS3 965 G has onboard GFX

it doesnt matter about the gfx its a comparitive spec.

The cpu power alone is worth it and he can always upgrade the gfx at a later date.

because media edition is what he gets with his current deal. you gonna suggest he short changes himself on the OS just so he can get conroe ?

as for the supposed savings your forgetting that by breaking the bundle offer you end up incurring some expenses. for example done seperatly using cheapest parts with your method...

Asrock Conroe945G-DVI (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £51.69

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail £126.89

OcUK 1GB (2x512MB) PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit £76.36

£37.59 for a 160 gig drive hard drive

£21.56 for a DVD drive

then Microsoft Windows XP Home - OEM - 1Pk (M93-00200) £58.74

then cheap mouse
Logitech B58 Optical Wheel Mouse (Black) - OEM £5.86

then cheap keyboard
Logitech Deluxe Keyboard (Black) - OEM £6.45

total so far £395.66

then a cheap case + generic PSU from a competitor
£22

which you would need to pay another £8 delivery for which i forgot

total :£425.66 inc vat and delivery.

still a clear £95.69 more expensive, or put another way an extra 30% more expensive and youve got a worse operating system + a naff case to boot.

Yes,

The chip is more important than the OS.

Liteon DVD-8900 16x DVD±RW/RAM (Black) - OEM is 18.79 more savings! :D

The little extra is worth it.

You get a pc twice the speed for not twice the cost.

Its a no brainer :D
