The Intel build is nice, but the AMD build is a better GFX card and you could even get the PCS+ R9 290 at £199 and match the price of the Intel.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Powercolor Radeon R9 290 PCS+ OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £199.99
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8320E Black Edition 3.20GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £109.99
1 x Gigabyte 970A-DS3P AMD 970A (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £52.99
1 x Avexir Core Red Series 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (AVD3U16001104G-2CIR) - Red Light £49.99
1 x Toshiba (7K1000.D) 1TB SATA 6GB/s 32MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA100) HDD £39.95

What case+PSU do you have?

What case+PSU do you have?

Antec high current gamer 510w and Fractal R5. So if I would go ahead with that AMD build, is it equally equivalent performance or is there a better outcome?

You have a good enough PSU+case:)

The AMD CPU is not as fast as the 4690K, but the R9 290 is much much better than the Nvidia or other AMD card you listed.

Most buyers guides I have seen basically say spend as much on the GFX card as you can, i.e - they combine the FX6300 with a R9 290 etc.

Did you also know that the GTX960 was out? faster than a GTX760 and uses less power.

Did you have an SSD?

If not you can get a large one and still be cheaper than the Intel build,

How about spending £20 for aftermarket cooler also.

Or I have just played with the Intel option and got this,

The intel build is defiantly the far better option of the two above.

Dont underestimate how important a powerful CPU is for gaming. The I5 is significantly better than the FX core CPU's when it comes to gaming.Need to clock FX cpu's to 4.3-4.5ghz to match them for gaming most of the time.

It would be worth it even the slightly weaker GPU as your rig would have far better longevity imo

Edit:I had an Fx CPU and moved to intel,i did like my fx6300 tho, awesome little cpus for the cost. But for smooth gaming I5 is a lot better

Yeah ill be sticking to intel, amd doesnt really appeal to me, rather be assured performance for the extra cash upon, I guess AMD would only be suited to build a system that isnt for gaming

I have both setups and with high end gpus outside of benchmarks the difference is maybe 15% in intels favour. Gaming wise you wouldn't really notice the difference so go with what you feel comfortable with - i dont think you can "lose".

Intel = BMW
AMD = Alfa Romeo

Both have thier place

Just more suited to a budget gaming rig.

My Fx6300+mobo+cooling cost £145

My intel CPU+mobo+cooling cost £300

Intel Cpu's are better, but they aint THAT much better :p

I think in Mantle games or games where the CPU isn't an important factor the AMD setup will be the better performer.

There will be situations though where the CPU will hold you back.

Going forward DX12 may help too as it'll hopefully do what Mantle does with regard to removing load from the CPU, except it'll probably do it in more games. But it'll probably take a while before that happens in which time you may change the system anyway...

My person feelings is the FX eight is no slouch and the better GFX card just makes it stronger.

Plus the fact if you dont need an SSD its cheaper or if you do then bonus.

The ideal solution is 4690K+290.

Stupid answer.

If you have the money go intel/nvidia. The AMD cpu's are cheaper than intel as are the GPU's, people with a larger budget will usually go with intel & nvidia.

What?

Read the two specs and tell me which would perform better for gaming.

Intel rig would perform better for gaming overall
At the same game settings the AMD rig would have higher maximums for framerate. Buts its minimums would be far lowerr, the general experience would be far smoother on the Intel build.

This is the exact reason i moved from an FX>Intel.

If OP plays MMO's,RTS or games like Arma/Planetside,the Intel rig would be significantly better.

Theres no point having a powerful GPU,if your CPU cant utilize it properly in all scenarios.

The amd build listed isnt 'bad',but with the intel based rig being the same price its a no brainer.

We won't know how well it runs on any machines until it's released unfortunately.

However if the port is anything like GTA 4 then expect it run like turd :(.

Interesting.

And what about for GTA5, which was specifically mentioned in the OP?

Almost certainly it will perform better on the intel.Open world games love IPC,which is where Intel smashes AMD.

If its well threaded and optimized it should run well on AMD rigs however.

A lot of it comes down to how nitpicky you are about performance.Im one of those people who cant stand my FPS tanking down to to the 30/40's even if its only for a few seconds.Same with random slowdown's or just plain struggling to maintain a steady 50-60 fps in certain games.

These were all issues on FX cpu's for me,For some people it doesn't bother them,or they plain just dont notice and thats fine.

Although anyone saying AMD cpus are total trash for gaming are exaggerating, they are decent enough and get the job done.Intel CPU are simply just better than AMD's recent offerings.

Also ihe AM3+ platform has zero future upgrade path, and is missing a whole bunch of features that the z87/97 chipsets have implemented.Am3+ is just old/dated and in dire need of replacement,it has no longevity

I hope next years Zen Desktop CPU's from AMD can be more competitive with Intel on a Core vs Core basis.
