AMD Bulldozer Finally!

We have had the official word from AMD on the whole am3 compatability issue they will not officially support bulldozer unless it is in a am3+ board has been stated many times now. Some mobo companys might well get BD working in their am3 boards but you do it at your own risk AMD will not honour any warranty on the cpu's if you do that.

Since when have either AMD or Intel ever given you support for a CPU? ;)
Its the motherboard support that matters - if they support it, thats all that counts and i personally will care about.

I've only been waiting since March last year and decided the AMD route hearing about Bulldozer back then - My X4/X6's have always been a temporary stop gap until then. First it was confirmed last year BD would have AM3 support - Hence I jumped on the 890series of boards, then it changed (I got dissapointed), and now its changed back again (I'm excited again!). This wait had better be worth it lol

They are already releasing 890fx chipsets with AM3+ sockets on them, waste much?

Read the thread properly and don't spread false info

OK, here is all I know. When this all came up I asked the product manager if it was possible to put an AM3+ CPU in an AM3 board.

The answer was no.

There was no grey.

I believe that any data not coming from AMD should not be taken at face value.

Ask yourself this: Why, if there was somehow a way to make it work with AM3, would we not have said that a few months ago when we made the statement? Why would we take the heat from angry AM3 users if it would work? Think that one through for a minute.

The reasons are clear man - read the rest of this thread, it's been discussed to death.

Only SOME motherboards with AM3 sockets will work. AMD are obviously taking the safe stance which is to recommend using only AM3+ - As it will be 100% compatible with ALL am3+ motherboards. Otherwise they would have a massive band of AM3 users demanding why its doesn't work for them and does for others.

Only Asus so far have confirmed and even then its only on SOME boards - how is that not clear?

I can understand why AMD say they will only support it on AM3+ - its logical - not all AM3 boards have the electricals/tracks in place to support the pins required. and bear in mind - JUST because you have 5000 pins on a cpu socket - the cpu itself can still operate with only 4999 pins for example. Just like todays generation of X6 cpu's which don't use ALL the pins on an AM3 socket.

Its not as if theres anything to worry about really - you guys need to chill and wait until bulldozer is released - only THEN will we know 100%.

I believe we established that we do not know the pin count on BD hence we don't know if the pin which would not fit into the socket is even on the chip!

No offense mate, but as far as I remember we won't know until the actual release.

I have always been of the opinion that for a processor upgrade you always go for the latest series chipset. However I do not upgrade my processor annually.
I would not buy a 700 AM2+/AM3 series chipset now for a Phenom/Thuban build likewise I would buy a 900+ series chipset if and when I buy Bulldozer.
I will sell the 890 board and current x6 processor at the same time if not together to part fund the upgrade.

I do hope that there is a bios upgrade path, however I will not be using it. I still think it possible that it will be for a lower AM3+ processor upgrade if the current CPU's go to AM3+ socket as they went from AM2 to AM3.

AMD have only one current processor pin type (AM3) even if they are compatible to several generations of socket.

has no one thought that these AM3 boards have got AM3+ sockets on in preparation for BD release hence just a bios flash?

That was my initial thought when I first read about it, end of the day we will all just have to wait and see what happens when we finally see more info on BD and the AM3+ MB's.

As it stands it is all speculation.
