AMD - Catalyst 14.3 Beta driver, Thief Patch featuring Mantle/TrueAudio, and fix for Vsync out now

Any updates with BF4?
My GF's Dad runs his FX6300 with a 7850, using Mantle it's smooth, but there's tons of little stutters with loads of low FPS which make it unusable that he simply doesn't get in DirectX.

Sounds like hes exceeding the vram limit.

Doubtful, he's not running it maxed, and DirectX doesn't have the problem.
And also find the whole VRAM debate massively blown out of proportion (People posting cached VRAM images etc), it's like people forget that our 3GB/4GB cards are far, far far from what the rest of the world is running.

I use over 1gb more on Mantle as i do vs DX11. As i say sounds like hes exceeding the vram limit. Stick this into the console and note the vram usage when the spikes start. If its anywhere near 2000mb you know the reason why.

Render.DrawScreenInfo 1

Well then that's surely a problem with Mantle if it's using more VRAM (To that extent)

I'll ask him to try it, but if that's the case, then that's massive fail :p

I'm just happy to be using 3.5gb of my vram on Mantle vs 2.4-2.7gb on dx. Knew 4gb would be a good idea. :p

shouldnt it detect how much vram you have on startup and only use so much? i remember a game i use to play and you set how much you allowed to use in the config

it should be doing that no?

It uses as much as it wants. If it goes over what you have, it starts to use pagefile/dram and stuttering or fps drops occur. Mantle uses around 3.5gb of vram at 1440P ultra preset in BF4 and stays there, unless i alt tab out.

but my point is it shouldnt
its not hard for it to set the limit under what you have?
i guess it would need to lower the texture quality when things start to slow down, but ive seen a few games with that option!?
what if they 'optimize' it for 8gb next week :p

You need to lower in game settings if you want it to use less vram. That's the way its always worked, as far as i know. :p

But now we're going to have to run lower settings to run mantle as opposed DirectX, if it does indeed kill a 7850's 2GB VRAM (Despite it having plenty of GPU grunt for the settings it's running)

Surely that's counter productive (As there will be far, far, far more people gaming on 2GB cards than their will be 3GB or 4GB cards, and there will be far far more on 3GB than 4GB etc)

No good taking it up with me. Makes no difference for me as ive got plenty o vram. :p

I think its a known issue with Mantle and is on the Dice fix list. Its not a AMD bug afaik and is up to Dice to fix.

this thread made me check my driver version
it says
13.251-131206a-166151E-ATI
im not sure what the hell version that is :o
ive not had any problems tho

only been playing tera recently ><

You bring shame upon us all. :o

No idea which version you're on, 13.12 WHQL maybe? Best you stay there if you like overclocking/benching. No need to be using 14.x line of drivers unless you're using Mantle/TrueAudio. 14.x ain't for overclockers because of the powertune bug.

14.3 Beta looks like this.
