Right now i am running fx-6100, would a new tech quad code be an upgrade or do i have to get 6 / 8 cores.

i know the bulldozer cpu's was total poo, so would a piledriver quad be an upgrade.

I had that exact chip and upgraded to a 2500k. Needless to say I was very impressed and wish I'd done it sooner!! Go Intel!

What board do you have?
The 4670K OEM's are 150 quid as of this moment, if anyone's buying a new set up board/CPU for higher end gaming, there's no denying the value it's currently offering.

Two replys that had nothing to do with my question.
Will ppl ever stop pushing intel and just answer questions as they was asked

Erm, we need to know your motherboard to actually advise you.
But you know what? Nevermind, do what you want if you want and buy what you want.

Depends on situation, the IPC's slightly higher.

If that's what you want, then buy it.

I wouldn't I think an FX6100 to an FX4300 is an absolute waste of money.
A true upgrade would be an FX83, but then it depends on board.

It's difficult because I can't find any comparisons between the older and newer stuff.

I don't believe piledriver is a HUGE improvement over Bulldozer, only 8% apparently.

What GPU do you have? Is it gaming you mostly do? Reason I ask is with Mantle then CPU load will be reduced providing you have an AMD GPU so you may not 'need' to upgrade.

Bottom line however, no I don't feel the newer gen quads are quicker than a 6 core.

I'd sell up and go Intel... But as you seem adverse to that idea for some reason, if your board can support an 8320 then buy one of those. If it cant... Sell up and buy Intel.

My gpu is hd7950.

I dont need the power of intel, the system I have now plays game but the cpu is just like a space heater.
Would just like to drop down to a quad if it will do the job if not I will stay as I am

Bulldozer/Piledriver CPU's are all like space heaters though. :p

Dropping to a quad would be fine, but you'd lose some in-game performance.

If you went with intel however *looks at your signature* you would see a boost in CPU performance and a drop in temperatures. :D

...and no space heater! Any AMD FX CPU will be the same

Inb4 Intel runs hot, as we all like double standards.
Because the Haswell stuff does run hot due to the Tim.

Although, the effect to the end user is different,.I couldn't believe the heat coming out of the fx8320 set up I did, never felt anything like it before.
