AMD Cuts Price of 4870x2

Yeh ! Hoping it'll drop a little bit further yet tho *fingers crossed*

Hope it does it soon tho I'm gfx cardless :/

:confused:This is really a non argument WJA96. The X48 i had, like most of them, was a crap clocker. It was incapable of running at even the same speed as my P35, let alone my P45. It would'nt matter if it had two 32x lanes, the clock on it was rubbish. My clocking with 4870x2 has the optimal PCIe Bus speed at 110. Any higher and in fact 3d mark scores start to go down, not up.

Would this be the same on a 4870 1gb? Change the frequency to 110 and its better than 100?

You will see an increase in synthetic benchmark scores. 110 is not always optimal. It depends on when you start seeing errors.

It's not an argument. It's making a simple point that clock for clock on the CPU, a pair of 4870X2s in CrossFireX will run faster on an X48 than a P45 and the difference will be greater as the PCIe bus is overclocked.

I take your point about the CPU overclock not being as good on X48 as P45, but surely, in games (which is what most people are interested in) the CPU speed isn't the limiting factor - the graphics performance is the thing.

On a clock for clock basis, yes, your right. But as we are all clockers around here, we tend to clock the nuts of off what weve got. And an X38/X48 is a crap chipset for clocking on.

In that case then, why when this question comes up time after time do peeps troll out the answer "Your cpu limited" ?

The answer is, because they ARE. So go back to what i said earlier, and you will realise cpu speed is king. And king of cpu speed is the P35 and P45, the X38/X48 is crap, and the speed of it's PCIe lanes is irrelevent, when put into the context of it's clocking ability.

My X48 is fine for overclocking thanks, gets my E8500 upto 4.6 no bother!

I'm shure it does, but can you and do you game at that speed on a day to day basis ?

That was a flipant answer really. The point of the post above, as i've said to WJA96 before, for me, cpu speed is what it's about. For my setup, P35 and P45 works best and the X38/X48 just dos'nt cut it. But that's probably because i run phase 24/7. If i was on air it might be different, but i don't think so.

Granted no, but I can @ 4.4 Ghz which I use daily, still a pretty respectable OC i reckon :)

Bit off topic but do you know what is optimal for a GTX 280 OC?

Also how are you finding/working these out?

Cheers,

G

Old school 975x chipset *** (f t w) ;) edit : looking forward to the cuts, might be able to pick up a cheap 260 or 4870.
