AMD driver updates on Steam

1)Then whats the point of it in steam? I thought it was so people could conveniently and simply update their drivers?

2)and part of that "updating" process is deciding which are the best drivers for you. Or are your saying that ATI drivers never have any problems and people should just update to the latest ones all the time?

1) and that's exactly what its doing.

2) And to do that you have to go to the AMD site anyway to look at the release notes if a person is concerned of its contents.

I've always found this paranoia towards driver and Windows updates hilarious. Especially with driver updates when they can always be undone rather easily.

typically driver updates i leave until i need to update them, as it;s more hassle than it;s worth.

1) No it doesn't

2) That defeats the whole purpose of having it in steam

1)What are you talking about that it doesn't. i click update drivers & its done. what's your definition of convenience.

2)No it does not defeats the whole purpose of having it in steam as a who is worried is not going to use steam to update the drivers at that would fall under the 1) category.
The release notes are not in the driver neither are they shown.

And it makes no difference if you go to AMD & download & install. if the driver is going to give problems then its going to give problems. download it from AMD does not avoid those issues.

You either wait & see what others find or you install & find out for yourself like always.

You really don't get it :(

Click - comes up with a page "Your Driver Version: 10.4 Latest driver version: 10.10 - your drivers are out of date do you want to update them?"

whats so hard to understand?

Yep, that would be great, but im on about the other points that you made about knowing what's in the driver & if its right for that persons system & people who are worried about it will wait & see what others make of it first.

People who don't worry will use the express install & steam provides that.

So far I've not had anyone from Steam/Valve come around twist my arm and force me to click the button (well, menu item), so I seem to have gotten away with it.

On the other hand Steam does tend to update most of my games without me asking it to. I don't think it will even let me play them until I download the update. The video driver update seems far less intrusive.

Could it be implemented better? Yes.
Should any of the Steam staff and their families be shot because of it? No.
Should they have to make everything idiot proof? Well, that's the question isn't it?

It's a bit like IBM developers menu's where critical options are put on the right click without a Yes/No option. There really should be an option to opt-out in the settings, and a safeguard (as mentioned), to stop the process.

User's won't always want the latest and greatest because the latest and greatest isn't always what they want. For joe public it might mean that they go off AMD products because of artifacting etc, and long time until another decent driver is released for their config.

I do like the attempt at convience though, but it really should be built into catalyst and not steam.

You have the option to keep the game updated automatically in the game properties.

The driver update in steam seems to have fixed my 'display driver has stopped responding' error message.

I'm well chuffed at the moment

If you click on the 'update drivers' button once, it appears that it will automatically download a newer version once released. That is my gripe. I wanted to update last time and not this time. Not yet anyway.

Anyway, where is it downloading these driver files to? I only ask as my drivers are usually downloaded to my D drive, installed on my C drive, but Steam is on my G drive.

It downloads the new one automatically once released but it wont install it & it will replace that one with a new newer version once released & not install that ect....

It will only install once you hit the button.

Anyway its not like people will not learn from the first time they clicked that button that it will auto install..

If it doesn't install automatically at least that gives me another chance not to press the option lol.

However, I only have sub 512KB internet due to living on the moor, and having anything download in the background with my consent is a pain in the arse as it slows the connection so much for everything else (e.g. gaming in Steam).
