AMD FidelityFX And Radeon Image Sharpening Tested vs DLSS

The fact that this can be used for either Nvidia or Amd is a win win for everyone. It does indeed make the image cleaner, its it a must have feature probably not but in saying that anything that makes the image look better without a hit on performance is a big win, win.

This Open Source method requires engine support while the Radeon image sharpening is a driver toggle feature that just needs a game to be running on the supported API.

RIS vs DLSS tested = AI Fail

Thanks, @Panos for post added to OP

Here you go, CAS on any hardware through reshade:

Because it has or had in the spec sheet very narrow cases where it worked it does not do 4k above 60fps, And 1440p also has limitations. The Nvidia version has no framerate limits and allows x4 your native res.

But when done specifcally at x4 with 0% smoothing the way it was intended you get something about half way to true 4k but crucially at any framerate you like. Nvidia are so far ahead here believe it or not you can tecnically do 8k at 240fps on Nvidia on a 1080p monitor! You actually do see fidelity increases also and its super sharp i tested it in For Honor at 8k the chainmail just keeps becoming more and more detailed. But i had like 25fps as well.

I stick to 4k 120 right now, I will move again to 240hz once the KD25F is released and in would love this feature on top of 4k DSR. Because i think i can get most of the sharpness from the 4k image but on my framerate and panel size of choice.

Not sure what has changed, the last time I checked out VSR was on R9 290. With my VEGA 64 I can do 4k at 120hz and 5k at 60hz
Not sure if Navi can do better.

It is exactly as i said, just a simple sharpening filter similar to what Nvidia has offered for several years. It isn;t offering any kind of advanced upscaling capabilities

It is lol?

It's adjustable on the fly reading the image and sharpening where needed.
What you saying is a full image sharpening that nvidia offer or reshade.
This is very different and far from a basic simple sharpening like you say.

Also what matters is the final image and so far it seems to be positive.

Not from the sharpening algorithm though, the scaling is the same bicubic scaling that has existed in GPUs since they existed. AMD hasn't done anything differently here.

Like I have told you since day one. AMD is using something that has already existed from a GPU/Display upscaling yes I give you that.

They have added driver side tweaking to make this upscaling better then it would normally be.

The end result is a 4k image from a lower resolution and going by feedback it does a good job.

It really doesn't matter how amd get there so long as the end result is good enough.

Where are you getting 4k from? AMD doesn't say anything about scaling on the website and even the review stated the screenshots were taken at 1080p..

Not only that but they were taken on an nVidia card so none of those so called 'driver side scaling tweaks' would apply here anyway ...

Sorry you confusing FidelityFX what is a GPUOpen engine version of Radeon image sharpening.

RIS is a driver toggle, FidelityFX is a game by game feature.

Both quite similar.

No, on monitors it's no down/up screen resolution. You are talking about GPUs.

It's something else. It brings out fine line and other images making them stand out more without denoising the rest of the screen

That is just a normal sharpening filter. My TV and BenQ monitors have this also, it creates an unwanted halo effect. See Link

https://www.cnet.com/how-to/turn-down-your-tv-sharpness-control/

RIS is different, has it adjusts the sharpness based on contrast on the fly. Enhancing details while not creating unwanted effects like the halo effect.

We still need to see a full review break down to really get an understanding of how good RIS is and its downsides as am sure like DLSS they will be downsides.

I would love to try RIS on Squad.

It's very good AA. On stills I can easily spot the difference, but as the guy says in motion in certain types of games it will be hard to tell.

Given that the 5700 and 5700XT can't do 4k anyway, it's a good option to have.

That is how I see it.
DLSS and RIS has an option for people with less graphic power that want to get some use out of the 4k monitor.

4k gaming is still quite expensive, the monitors not so much now.

Conclusion;

"The big question, however, is how does RIS look in action? To our eyes, we definitely noticed the sharpening of in-game objects and surfaces with added detail and without detectable artifacts. While it's not a complete replacement for running at higher resolutions, we can't argue with what is essentially a "free" fidelity boost in virtually any game engine with AMD's new Radeon RX 5700 series GPUs."

Seems like a nice little added bonus :)

These won't ever replace native resolution that is a given. Anyone who believes DLSS would replace native res is only fooling themselves. What it does do though is just adds that bit extra to the image and for a simple driver toggle, you have to say AMD got something going right here.

I really want to see this now side by side with DLSS if AMD has managed to beat nvidia for image quality. Then DLSS just adds pointless dev time to add to games and is a complete waste of time.

Both RIS and Anti-lag should be promoted and shown more by RTG. So we all understand what's going on.

They both offer tangible benefits when gaming.

I have been gaming tonight with AntiLag on Squad and it does seem more responsive, this has been my go-to game last couple weeks now game updates either just a driver and a toggle on for AntiLag. I have spoken with friends who play BF5 also and say the same thing.
