AMD fights back at Intel with new K8L Chip

Seems as if AMD might come out on top again....really have to wait til the benchmarks come out though.
 
40% :eek: i assume thats clock for clock? hope thats right, cause if it is AMD are back on the hunt, i sincerly hope they get more clock speeds out of K8L as well :)
 
You do realise that this is on about the 'Barcelona' server chip and it is a comparision is against Intel's 'Clovertown' server chip.

Nothing to do with a Core 2 Duo/Quad competitor.
 
'According to AMD, K8L includes a quad-core design for servers, workstations and high-end desktops, and a dual-core design intended for mainstream desktop markets.' note quad core for high end desktops and dual-core variant for mainstream desktop, K8L is a competetor to the ENTIRE 'core' architecture, not just clovertown, its gonna go up against conroe as well in the desktop market as well as the quad conroe in the high end market

Yeah I know, im just saying that that comparision was against the 'Clovertown' which is a server CPU, so the comparision would have been done using server tasks etc etc.
 
Azza is right.... 40% at server level (if accurate) will probably mean a fair bit less at desktop level because the Hypertransport and onboard memory controller of the K8L will give a big boost to the chip in heavy memory intensive tasks.

Still, if it is pretty damn accurate then we still should see K8L being comfortable faster than the conroe, not sure how much faster the 45nm C"Ds will be than the conreos, what with them supposedly having hyperthreading again, but we shall see. They won't be out till 6 months after K8L.
 
I belive that even if AMD take the crown back with the native quad it will not be long until intel claims it back; and I dont think anyone will spend 400quid(who knows?) for a chip that will be already old since intel is already designing ahead. time will tell tho.

ps: One thing is certain tho, the processor will soon become the new transistor and god knows how many cores a CPU will have :p

But theres always a better chip around the corner and amd is designing ahead
 
if they plan to fit GPU and CPU into the same package they really need to address heat for sure :) However, CPU and GPU without the need of a bus looks interesting :D

cant see it being much of a powerhouse, good for mobile solutions though, and entry level budget desktops
 
Sure these AMD chips will be good but intel wont fumble the ball:

I only favor AMD for simple reason they are cheap in comparrison to Intel and still give good levels of peformance. However there are people who like to be bent over and taken for a ride by the over-inflated Intel top end prices, well each to there own and it makes great market competition at least. :) ;)

most intel cpu's are cheaper then there amd equivilants...
 
Well maybe current lines with sudden price drops yes but not through history, anyhow like i said each to there own and whatever keeps em happy. :p ;)
 
While they claim K8L is 40% faster than Clovertown, what I want to know is how fast a single threaded application tied to 1 core will work. Is the basic chip architecture better, or are they just basing that 40% claim on highly threaded applications all making heavy use of memory and the main cpu bus.

If so, Hypertransport, and native quad core should certainly show a strong advantage over Kentsfield in synthetic tests.

What we need is like for like comparisons, a dual core 'mid range' K8L V a Core Duo.

If K8L's a conroe beater I'll be cheering along with the fanboys, as it appears intel wish to remain crowned performance leaders, and if they lose the crown, they will get out Yorkfield, their own monolithic native quad core, which should be hot on the heals of Penryn.

We're the winners, let intel and amd battle for eternity :)
