AMD freesync coming soon, no extra costs.... shocker

Sorry just going by what the FAQ that thracks put up says.

It is an Open Standard that AMD have asked it to be part of the DP 1.2a standard. nVidia would easily be able to incorporate it into their drivers/GPUs as well.

I would be a little disappointed if they only did G-Sync in truth and choice is welcomed.

Am guess Nvidia will need to add support for it.

This and they won't support it if they feel/know Gsync is a superior alternative. Time will tell on this one, glad its finally coming to fruition though. For a time there it was starting to look as mythical as the ROG swift :D

Wat happens with say the monitors already out with DP 1.2a?? The 24" 4K dell is listed as 1.2A compliant yet, Its been on sale before vesa ratified freesync. So how the flip do i know it will work? Did the dell already do vblank?

I have no idea and im confused. AMD doing a great job as usual of the PR.

I don't see what all the fuss is about, Nvidia has Gsync and Adaptive-Sync(should they support it) and AMD has Adaptive-Sync, use it, don't use it, it's available to both vendors in some shape or form.

Systems that pass Adaptive-Sync compliance testing will be allowed to feature the official Adaptive-Sync logo on their packaging, informing consumers which DisplayPort-certified displays and video sources offer Adaptive-Sync

It's only been officially announced in the last few hours rofflay, AMD PR has hardly even started, if any of the current 1.2A compliant monitors are capable they will be advertised as supporting the feature in product descriptions, simples really.

Tom Peterson@PAX when asked about Nvidia adoption said Nvidia will look at it and evaluate it and stated:

Nvidia will almost always favour an open standard

Didn't they just mention that the option was available on the cards since then?

Even if it was, it's bad crack if they don't implement it in future for older cards.

Unless it's more to do with when the tech development was available using in house dev with mobile/gpus using direct monitor connection as those gpu's wouldn't have DP outputs.

Q: What AMD Radeon™ GPUs are compatible with Project FreeSync?
A: The first discrete GPUs compatible with Project FreeSync are the AMD Radeon™ R9 290X, R9 290, R7 260X and R7 260 graphics cards. Project FreeSync is also compatible with AMD APUs codenamed “Kabini,” “Temash,” “Beema,” and “Mullins.” All compatible products must be connected via DisplayPort™ to a display that supports DisplayPort™ Adaptive-Sync.

I went off this thracks quote tommy to assume its only the new gen gpu's

I wonder what those r9 cards have older gens don't? Noticed the 280/x is missing from that list too so must be some hardware change or other.

Maybe they can be supported in older gen cards but AMD are wanting people to upgrade to newer cards? Makes good business sense to me.

A good point but why neglect the 280 series? Perhaps as it would mean 7900's become flashable for the new feature set? Fairly sure amd said the tech was present in their cards since the 6000 series...

Was hoping to see the 280x on that list as that should mean my 7970ghz's are included as well. Hopefully it is purely a matter of focusing on the current stuff now and rolling out legacy support over time. Given the fact that these screens are 6-12 months of we have plenty of time to find out.

i wanna know if existing monitor with DP 1.2a, can be compatible with firmware update
I guess that would depend on the underlying hardware. But it is not really in the manufacturers interest to put the time into the development and support when instead they can sell you a new monitor.

@AMDRadeon Hi there, will the 280X be able to have this feature? Thanks

@Indie_RetroNEWS @AMDRadeon Apparently not.

@James1o1o @AMDRadeon That sucks and I don't see any reason why not! I'm starting to wonder why I purchased a 280x :(

@Indie_RetroNEWS @James1o1o @AMDRadeon 280X will support but the monitor makers need to adopt it. Same for gsync. 280X rocks!
