AMD FX-4170 Gaming build, Nvidia GPU, Watercooling

Hello,

Below you will see a list of parts I have ordered from Overclockers.co.uk hoping to arrive 6th-August to 10th-August.

Optical Drive: OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black)
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-099-LG

Order Total: £921.32

I have also aquired; Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Paste, PCI-e Wifi N Network Card, Microsoft 800 Wireless Keyboard and mouse combo (Temp until i can save for something better)

What is everyone's opinions on these parts?
Bearing in mind I have already ordered them and as far as I am aware through research they are all compatible.

Also any tips on problems I may come across and how to solve them?

I am not looking in to overclocking the CPU for a while as if I were to overclock it now that will be all the performance I would get out of it, I would rather do it after a few months so it feels like a new machine.

All of the parts I have listed I have researched and looked at reviews. Also they were picked on ability to upgrade in the future. I originally was looking for a single 8Gb DDR3 Dimm but they are hard to find at reasonable costs.

Just did, was not too sure on rules. What if a product is not sold by Overclockers.co.uk, Could they be mentioned with a brief (Unfortunately not sold by overclockers.co.uk so another online store was used)

I have decided AMD and bought it and my mind is set, so could we please stick to the parts I have chosen. And i have only just noticed the £10 Cashback too, little added bonus. Also the CPU comes with a free download code for DiRT Showdown, but a free copy is also in my order separately. Could this be down to the cost of the order or another offer I seem to have blindly missed meaning I get 2 copies? If so that would be great as a friend of mine wants to give it a go, even though it doesn't live up to DiRT3?

Hmm... not being too picky but...

AMD + MB:

Intel alternative:

Better CPU performance for a little cheaper.

I would have also got a 7850 instead of the 560 Ti since it's better performance for the price as seen here on this Anadtech benchmark (not to mention it's massive overclocking headroom):

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7850 OC Windforce 2X 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card w/ Nexuiz & Dirt Showdown PC Games £194.99
Total : £205.79 (includes shipping : £9.00).

I also would have got this Corsair PSU instead: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-052-CS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1084

You can drop OcUK a webnote to change the order if you wish: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/webnote.php

Thanks but I picked that motherboard because of specific features. I would have the Asus Crosshair Formula V if they didn't go out of stock 5 minutes before me ordering...

And call me stupid or outdated but I want a AMD Bulldozer CPU, Intel will be next build in a few years I promise.

The Config will run most games on Ultra settings anyway, im not looking for multiple monitors or gaming over 1080p as I will be using a 46inch 1080p TV for a long time anyway.

The free copy appears as a seperate item in the basket.

Just trying to get the best for your money Oliver...

FX-8120 vs i5-2500K

Scroll down and you can see the 2500K crushing the FX in gaming...

Thanks, the FX-8150 is 3.6Ghz 8 core, im getting the FX-4170 which is 4.2ghz (be it half the cores) so it will be better at gaming then the FX-8150 as most games are not coded to use more then 2-3 Cores. The PC will be used for 3D modelling to make 'modded' cars for games also as I am a Solidworks user, Im lucky enough to have distributions provided by my work for Training and work at home.

I know the Intel Processors are great pieces of technology but I will not change my mind from AMD, simple as.

Posting after purchase on these boards is unwise. You should have had a big 'spec me' thread with the build afterwards. ;)

Some unwise choices in there.

Your sincerely

An AMD owner.

I know, but as it is my first build I wanted the feeling of knowing I had done all the research and decisions my self. I am more looking for things I can do to improve the parts I have ordered.

And to the guy saying people will not be happy I picked AMD, dont worry, I am used to that sort of thing when all my friends got iPhones and I got a HTC Sensation, routed it and am able to run Ubuntu on it with minimal lag. should have seen their faces! :)

As said above, a i5 3570k and a AMD 7850 would have been a lot better than the Bulldozer build. It would have also allowed a better upgrade path. But you seem certain that you don't want to change your order, may I ask why you want the Bulldozer CPU?

Well you will kill me for saying this, mainly Clock Speed bragging rights and to join friends who have sub£400 AMD Gaming PC's so mine will 'Rape' theirs in performance without them using the "Intel AMD not comparable" excuse.

At the end of the day im not trying to build a PC able to play games at 100fps @ 2000X1600, just something that is lightning quick and able to play all games on High (Maybe ultra) at 60fps at 1080p (as im using a TV for now :( )

As an upgrade path I can SLi another GTX 560ti 2Gb and overclock to 4.8ghz on the cooler I have picked easily. Im not a millionaire just an Admin Apprentice who wants some fun at the end of the day.

Also my girlfriend is getting ****ed at her Sim3 taking 10-15 mins to load on the crappy 2.2ghz HP All-In-One pc and I cannot model on it, hence the reason for the build.

I'm sorry, but that is one of the most silly reasons to stay away from Intel. Almost all prebuilt systems are made from lower end parts not designed for gaming at all.

Again i will get ripped for this, the girlfriends PC is AMD Athlon X3 based, with no possible means of unlocking the forth core.

Anyway, 90% of these posts are not in relation to what I am asking. I have asked if I will run into any problems with these parts and any suggestion of what I can do to make the current build stronger, maybe upgrade wise or with setting adjustments, not REPLACE WITH INTEL REPLACE WITH INTEL REPLACE WITH INTEL as its getting a little boring now.

Its like walking into a Tech store asking how to speed up your Android phone and they just say, throw it in the bin and go for apple. Its not what i asked

From what everyone is replying with it would seem the Title is;

Can you please rip me for buying AMD and then go on and on about Intel until the thread is requested closed due to time wasters!

I will break it down with prices so all of you understand where the cost is coming from:

CPU: Fx-4170 = £104.99 inc VAT

Motherboard to support with great features: ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX = £157.99 inc VAT

So less than a third is spent due to it being AMD.

GPU: GTX 560ti 2gb Edition = £215.99 inc VAT

Case: NZXT Phantom Enthusiast USB3.0 = £109.99 inc VAT

PSU: Xigmatek Centauro 800W = £86.99 inc VAT

Watercooling: Corsair Hydro H80 = £79.99 inc VAT

X2 Quiet High Flow fans for H80 to reduce noise: Scythe Gentle Typhoon = £29.98 inc VAT

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB = £64.99 inc VAT

RAM: Patriot Viper Xtreme 8GB = £39.95 inc VAT

Optical Drive: Cheap One for Windows Install Only as I'll use Steam = £13.99 inc VAT

It is mainly the other components I have chosen which raised the cost, like the £110 case for example, or the £220 GPU.

So please stop with this Intel crap.

My original choice was the Corsair, but the must have only received stock today as yesterday they were out of almost all Corsair PSU's

Well, it's your money to waste to all I have to say is good luck.

This bit does make me laugh though:

You literally have no where to go CPU-wise.

The FX-x3xx (Fx-8150>Fx-8350) Series are coming out in next few months. They are AM3+ and based on Piledriver.

They are supposed to fill in the downfall of the Bulldozer range not living uyp to specs. As the FX-4170 is only £100 im happy to use it until an FX-8350/FX-4370 drops down in price.

I love the complaining about slow loading times and then doesn't spec himself an SSD. How people can live knowing they more or less just flushed money down the loo.

Please, listen to these guys and get an Intel. This is just getting stupid.

I am already saving for an SSD which is for sale on another online store. I have enough for a 60gb one but want to go 120gb as I plan running FEA Analysis on some models which would end up in a 20/30gb file.

It has all been planned, I just didn't want to have to explain FEA.

But then you're waiting for an unknown quantity, that likely won't be as good as what's currently out from the Intel range.

Do you like wasting money?

Oddly yes. If I have nothing to save for and I have spare money I spend it on myself or my girlfriend as a treat for no particular reason, but when money is needed I can always put it back as I get paid Weekly.

Once you add £70 for the H80 so I could overclock the CPU quietly so it would be able to handle FEA Analysis, then the £30 for the quiet High flow fans to replace H80 ones your looking at £1025

you didnt knock the price for the heatsink i had

Good point, didn't notice it, sorry. Either way I am happy with what I have selected and at the end of the day I will be using it, not you. I was looking for constructive feedback but clearly everyone is too childish to even try.

So this improved AMD build will be ignored then?

Sorry but FX4 for that budget... really... can't justify...

Stop saying FX4, there are a few different variants of it.

FX-4100 = 3.6ghz

FX-4150 = 3.8ghz

FX-4170 = 4.2ghz

I have picked the FX-4170 as it is the best FX CPU for gaming as no games that I would play would even use more then 4 Cores. Not only that, you have spec'd the FX-8120, which is only a measly 3.1ghz which is one of the worst FX CPU's for gaming.
