AMD FX 8320 analysis

At 1080p the 770 outperforms the 7970 quite easily on recent drivers,

Metro: Last Light
1920 x 1080 [Kein AA/16xAF] 68,2 57,3 (-16,0%)

At higher res and high AA the 770's limited memory bandwidth removes the lead, as is common:

Metro: Last Light
2560 x 1440 [SSAA/16xAF] 21,8 21,0 (-3,6%)

AMD favouring games at high res/settings have quite an advantage:

Dirt: Showdown
2560 x 1440 [4xAA/16xAF] 57,8 69,9 (+21,0%)

(Benches are reference 7970, not GE)

Think it's generally agreed that a the 7970GHz would trade blows with the GTX770, but max overclock vs max overclock, the 7970 clearly pull ahead.

770 v 7970 GE

Metro: Last Light
1920 x 1080 [Kein AA/16xAF] 68,2 60,3 (-11,6%)

Metro: Last Light
2560 x 1440 [SSAA/16xAF] 21,8 21,9 (+0,8%)

Dirt: Showdown
2560 x 1440 [4xAA/16xAF] 57,8 74,8 (+29,4%)

And AC3, which started all this, again favours nvidia disproportionately.

Assassin's Creed III
1920 x 1080 [4xAA/16xAF] 82,6 64,6 (-21,8%)

The 7970 GE has a clear lead over the 770 -- it does trade blows, but is only beaten by games that favour nvidia. As I say, above 1080p and the 770 falls behind very quickly (a good reason why 770 SLI is much poorer than 7970 CF).

Here is my 4770K @ 4.5GHz with OC'd 670 SLI for reference

(Seems very low.. going to check some things)

I tried increasing the OC, only gained 2fps average. It looks like DOF absolutely kills performance on 670s.

Without DOF

My 670s are clocked quite high out of the box. 1085 boost IIRC. Sadly I can't overclock them as one will just crash with something stupid like an extra 15mhz.

The core use has me intrigued I must say. That looks like a decently even spread load for a game as old as it is.

Your 8320 at 4.3GHz and 670 SLI is performing more or less the same as my 4770K at 4.5GHz with the same cards. I think yours is doing slightly better on maintaining frame rate.

Aha ! just found this digging through my Photobucket..

Xeon E3 1220 @ 3.4ghz.

So it's definitely not CPU bound. What's really, really odd is how close my min FPS were to the 670s in the rig they're in now (running @ X16 X4 hacked).

Except that run is full of stutters. It's the same with the 4670K, but even worse.

The benchmarks from the 8320 and 4770K are miles better.

Yup definitely. I've not seen a single game yet that doesn't perform better on my 8320, even at 4.2ghz (my old pre blown up by a bad cable PC).

I've been on Windows 8 now for ages. To me it's what has made all of the difference.

Can't wait to bench Sleeping Dogs now (because I have the scores from the Xeon) but that needs to download a serious chunk of data :( When you install it you basically get half on the install disc then it downloads the other half

I buy my games on media because I can install them and for the most part not have to bother with the internet. I can either just connect for long enough to activate the game. But some games now are really annoying.

Get faster broadband :p It won't be long before we can't buy media copies I expect.

I like collecting them man. Kinda like in a hoarding way but not that obsessive (they're all away where you can't see them). But yeah, tend to like having something physical.

As for internet? still waiting on fibre :D sadly the storm has caused BT a load of crap it seems so December 3rd it is :( This connection I'm on is a leased line (some poor sod is providing it off his bandwidth).

It's a pity you can't really overclock the Xeon E3's (e.g. E3-1230 v3) as they're competitively priced and for VT-d functionality etc. the main competitor of the FX 8350.

Email me your BIOS in trust and I'll sort that for you later this afternnon

Thanks almighty. Unfortunately my 7970 is physically locked with a resistor - I've used the ghz edition bios which attempts to up volts, but then it crashes as without removing the resistor it is physically limited :-( If I was brave enough I'd attempt to remove the resistor.
