AMD FX Overclocking

That board has no VRM cooling at all.

Why not try fitting some? surely there's something on that auction site that would fit? I really wish more people would be a bit more creative with the VRM problem :D

It's got the same little mosfet heatsink as davedree's board. I'll try actively cooling it with some 40mm fans and I've got some gfx card heatsinks in a pack I could re-purpose as an alternative.

Hey All,

Just saw this post and was hoping I could get a few tips of how to start overclocking, I currently have an AMD Black Edition FX 9370 and I'd like to get it up 5ghz ideally, using an ASUS sabertooth 990FX board.

Cooling wise its all sorted as just installed my first custom loop which was fun:

Any help or even a link to any rough guides would be good.

Cheers in advance.

I see on the second pic, the mosfet heatsink is removed. Did you replace it or re-paste it?

The thick standard thermal tape managed 4.8ghz with my titan fenrir and a 100mm fan at an angle of vrms, but when i was carrying out the suicide
Run at 5ghz and 5.2ghz, I replaced the tape for thermal paste just to give it a chance.

The 78lmt doesn't have a tmp sensor for the vrms, but maybe your board does?
The one problem with your board is you only have a 4 pin atx power connector, whereas the 78lmt has an 8 pin.

Ahhh thanks very much Pandem :) Looks like a good guide/read that.

I am guessing I cant really damage anything unless I go way way over the top with overclocking? as I tried a couple of times and it kept randomly turning off and shutting down at which point I thought I best leave it but seeing the results some people get I really want to try again.

Earlier in this thread I posted a link to my 8320 analysis and in there I posted all of the bios settings I used for 5ghz and higher.

Now I run a Crosshair but that doesn't matter, the bios screens and even the bios itself I reckon are identical.

You're looking at a 230 bus, multi to get you to 5ghz and offset the ram. Mine is running 1534 or something like that which is fine, cause it's old 1600mhz DDR3.

Also, don't manually volt or time your ram as this can cause instability on Asus 990 boards. Just leave it as is to start.

Antiquated pile of ...

What, it's true. You'd have been better off building her something a lot more streamline. Nice ITX i5 based system. Without those industrial fans lol :D

lol who's that towards Silent??

and is it bad to say sorry ALXAndy but what you said in last 2 lines of your post makes no sense what so ever to me :( Maybe I shouldn't be trying to **** about with settings lol

Cheers :) Will have a ganders tonight and just try the cheap way and copy someone else's settings and see what happens, I look at the shear amount of settings on the ASUS 990FX BIOS and just confuses me, not a clue who most of it means apart from the basics.

Ok Silent was just checking lol

How do you like the sabertooth compaired to Asus's Z? I'm bouncing between grabbing one of those boards as my 99X just doesn't have enough power to OC decently plus I'm thinking of grabbing 9000 series or E series to overclock the hell out of it..:D

Very nice sir!

Cheers Matt, lets hope it doesn't blow up tonight when I try some of this overclocking stuff.

Abit like letting a chimp loose in an antique shop and say don't touch or break anything.

You'll be fine, overclocking these chips seems fairly easy. I started at 4.4, then 4.8 and finally settled on 5Ghz. :)
