AMD gaming rig

Bah. The free games you get with the 7950 are worth far more than the postage cost, and (ignoring all AMD/nvidia bias) it's the better card.

To me personally the games would be pointless, looking at completed listings on a well known site the download codes are not worth that much either, though roughly equal to the P&P.

Regarding the graphics cards, there is not a lot in it at all.

It doesn't matter about current benchmarks, it's cheaper and it's still the better card - and things can change over the next year in terms of memory requirements.

I'd want the games - I did in fact, as I wanted Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider. Prices have been low because of the recent sales I imagine.

it's cheaper

Depends how you look at it mate, from my point of view the 670 works out £10 cheaper ;)

Regarding games, are you forgetting the 670 comes with Splinter Cell Blacklist? That is currently going for the same or more than the games package free with the 7970 :p

Who wants Splinter Cell when you can have Bioshock Infinite, Crysis 3, Tomb Raider and Far Cry 3?

And when BF4 comes out and the 670 is way behind, and suffers for lack of memory*, don't say I didn't warn you :)

* probably

I'd not want any of those games, though SC is currently going for the same as the other combined. I don't like the "free games" marketing gimmick anyway ;)

in BF3 at 1080p in ultra settings, the 1GB 7850 performs as well as the 2GB version, so I doubt 2GB vs 3GB will matter much once BF4 is out.

"way behind", I'll agree to disagree :p

I'd still be recommending the 7950 without a single game included. I recommended the 670 when it was a lot cheaper, but the 7950 at a lower price is a no brainer.

I know BF3 runs well - but BF4 is a brand new engine and DICE used 7970 Crossfire for demos of it at ultra in order to maintain 60fps. It may well want more than 2GB at highest quality settings, we'll just have to see.

It was listed as something for the OP to consider, the OP's max budget is £900 and the £10 saving for the 670 does make a difference. In terms of real world performance at 1080p, there is little between the 2 cards. Either will be great.

People were saying the same when the first quad core CPUs appeared - games only use one or two cores at most, so four cores won't help.

For existing games, yeah, both are cards are fine. But at the same price, I'd always recommend the higher spec card.

Another option ;)

To get that GPU in budget I've go to a 128SSD/500GB HDD (plenty for most people), DVD ROM (Won't burn dvd's but do you need to?), stuck with the stock cpu cooler.

I've always found stock coolers to be fine, but if/when you want to do a decent OC, you'll need to add an aftermarket cooler.

I may have cut a few corners, but if they are things that don't matter to the OP, the performance should be very good :)

Can't complain about a 7970!

The current Intel stock cooler isn't too terrible, just a bit noisy at load. The AMD ones are a lot worse.
