AMD - How to Change The Power Control/Limit from +20% to +50%

Are you really giving him grief just for telling people to be careful?

It's looking like it.:(

What can I say, just checked out the Anand/Oc.net threads and it's pick a fight time in every other post.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1394623/belials-comprehensive-guide-to-7950s

And my guides been used and modified to more or less-'whack it up to 50%'-all credit to tommybhoy, but since I'm not a member of those forums I'll not say too much about it.:p

OCN has a rule against linking other forums. In the AT guide I directly link you, in the OCN guide I think I made it clear that credit goes to you.

I don't pick fights, but there's a lot of misinformation around on AT and other beginner forums. As you see yourself, tons of people in there claiming their cards don't throttle at 20% because 'they dont notice in gaming'. I'm sure you would have a word too, especially when the people are quite ignorant to proper testing methods and what throttling is.

Then you got another guy saying that thermal pads are better than thermal paste, because his water cooled 7950 stays cool.

i got a sapphire R9 270x - this one: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-328-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1982

now this is the mod I done in the bios to raise the power limit, iv set it to 180w
30wv0cw.jpg

can I increase the figure higher? e.g 200w or would the core just pull too much power and the card go bang?

Like Matt said really, you have to worry more about the volts your putting into the card and the running temps.

Though im guessing your card has two 6 pin PCI-E power cables in it? That means the total power the card can draw from power sources is 225W i believe, so even setting it to 300 watts you will never reach this target anyway lol so dont worry.

yes the card uses 2 6pins for power.
that's interesting you say slap it to 300w , but if I do that and run furmark will it not draw crazy power since the limit is effectively removed and bust the card?

or is it a case that the gpu itself 270x physically cant reach that power level since its not that powerful?

UPDATE: I ended up changing the second '14' in the values below, and it worked just fine to enable me to increase my limit to 50% power limit on my R9 380 G1.

I'm happily running and benching: 1150 / 6000 @ +40mv and +40% power limit with no throttling. I have not tried pushing it further yet but honestly I don't really think I have need to, it plays everything fantastically, even at stock.

Now I want to change this for my R9 380, but my table isn't the same. Which value am I changing from 14 to 32?

Afterburners already showing a +50 power limit for me? Has it been changed recently? I don't mess around with overclocking etc and have never messed around with bio's etc.

Also while we are on the subject I'd like to ask about clocking the voltage via Afterburner.

When I turn "unlock voltage control on" should I also turn on "unlock voltage monitoring" and "force constant voltage"?

Also, Once it is on it shows +13 with the slider and it can go as far as +100 but these numbers tell me nothing, at least not that I understand If +13 is stovk voltage what is that? And what is it if I put it to say +50? What would that mean the voltage is at. I only messed with the voltage once before and then it was numbered such as 1.2 volts and I stayed below 1.3 (on air). Afterburner numbers mean nothing to me. Or at least they won't until it's explained.

Well, I found the thread via overclock.net, and I needed advise to why create another thread for something that already exists and is exactly what I needed? I don't have it possible to go to 50% at stock like a 290X btw, only 20% at which I throttle. Also... you can go higher (say 100% if you wish) so it's still relevant.

Secondly, the last post was : 22nd Dec 2014, so it isn't exactly that old.

On a side note, I just had to apply this change again.

This no longer seems to work since Crimson. I have not bothered (yes.... I know) to look at the registry again to see if that key is there, only that my existing registry export (that I just merge in after updates) no longer works.

I will take a look tonight maybe and see what to do to fix it (if it's the same key entry)

So has anyone got this to work on Crimson? Tried twice tonight and can't get past 20% annoyingly.

EDIT: actually, I managed to get it to work with Crimson. I just had to stop it started automatically with Windows and then it worked (I have re-enabled start with windows now though).
