AMD - How To Overclock The Official Way Using Afterburner + Step By Step Overclocking Guide + Comple

Thank you very much LtMatt your guide was perfectoooooo

Big thumbs up man

Thanks man. ;)

Do you need these steps if you just use Catalyst for overclocking, and Afterburner just for in-game temp monitoring? My system is a 7970 crossfire, and I'm happy with going for a moderate boost at stock voltage.

Sorry for the stupid question but if starting from a fresh windows 7 install I assume you miss out steps 6-9?

Thanks for taking the time to do this guide.. Very helpful

Thanks and yes, Kralnor answered all the questions. :)

Thanks again Matt, this was very helpful on Monday. :)

It's not a good clocker, highest clock I can get is 1220 MHz @1.3v

How much was the lighting Mike?

Are you satisfied with it or wishing you bad a better clocker?

1220 is not bad imo, you could probably settle on 1200 max and keep temps nice and low. I've gone back to 1094 atm and even this seems like overkill.

Anyone managed to get this to work with virtu universal mvp? Couldn't get it to unlock voltage, should I do this before installing virtu?

I don't even know what Virtu is. All i know is it seems to boost peoples benchmark scores. :p

I'm still having issues with my idle clocks being too high, and I'm wondering if it's related to AB or the drivers.

yesterday my pc crashed with some amd related message, and when it rebooted my idle clocks were where they should be (300/150) and my overclock was working too. Today, I boot up and I'm idling at 60C because my clocks are stuck at 500/1350 at full voltage!

Do you have more than one monitor?

Yep. Still a lot of strangeness with these drivers. That's why they're still betas I suppose!

Everything seems to be fine with me when I have the latest beta drivers and the latest AB, but if I apply Matt's fix I get the odd screen flicker (not related to memory clock changes) and/or my memory refuses to downclock. So that means I'm stuck with an overclock of 1125/1575 until some other kind of workaround comes along or the current problems are ironed out with the 12.11s.

Are you using dual screens?

Which version of Afterburner should you use? cheers :)

Latest version.

If I just overclock the cards (CF setup), without going OTT (say 1125/1325) do I need still need to do this for any particular reason? It seems like I have plenty to work with in AB 2.30 still if I needed to, and I haven't enabled unofficial overclocking.

No you don't unless you want to use afterburner or the OSD. The /xcl command + the dll file only expands the clock limits imposed by AMD.

Use /rcl to restore default clock limits.

I just reinstalled the latest beta drivers and afterburner and i didn't need to use the DLL file. Maybe you don't need to use it any more after all.

Which card do you have?

7970.

I uninstalled afterburner, didnt keep files and delete the dll. Then i used atiman uninstaller. Reinstall drivers+caps, restarted. Ran the /xcl command and it worked.

If the DLL is not needed then i definitely wouldn't use it as it could potentially conflict with something.

Installed msi ab and 12.11 cap 2.
unlocked unoffical and set 2 overclocking mode.
huge flickering no change is applied to mem or core clock.
set kernel mode and now it works to set clock and mem.
no xcl or dll.
changed back to user mode and now it works there also.
7970 windows 8 64bit.

Just a heads up once you apply an overclock in unofficial mode the card will not clock down until a 3d app is run.

That's why its better to stick with AMD's official mode as everything just works once you run the /xcl command.

Just done a reinstall without the DLL file and it is working. :)

P.S Did you enjoy your lay-in this morning. ;)

Yeah watched the cricket. :D

I've updated the guide, removed the part about the DLL and added atiman uninstaller link.

Thanks for the great guide! That flickering is at last gone!

Guide updated!

I now advise using Driver Fusion (which ive included as a download) instead of atiman or amd's own utility as Driver Fusion does not delete vital registry/chipset files unlike the other two. Plus it makes a backup as well if anything goes wrong. Used it myself yesterday and can confirm its 100% safe.

Afterburner Tip for overlay or crashing problems

If you're having problems with afterburners overlay not showing up on screen (for example if you run fraps at the same time) or if you find that afterburner is causing a crash in a certain game you can try this to fix the problem. I had a problem with sleeping dogs, i couldn't get afterburners osd and fraps to work together on this game. If i had them both running at the same time sleeping dogs would crash upon load. To fix it do this. Go to rivatuner, click the + sign, add the game exe, click the spanner, then enable the compatibility mode. Now i can run afterburner and fraps at the same time on windows 8 on sleeping dogs.

You can also play about with the detection level if you are still having problems getting the osd to show on certain titles.

Hi so what's the HKShip.exe is it the Sleeping Dogs exe?

Yes that was just an example of the exe showing up as you add it as a profile under rivatuner.

A few people mentioned crashing issues with afterburner after quitting a game, will be interesting to see if setting up a profile, using compatibility mode and changing detection level to low will solve their issues. I'm sure it was pgi or someone who had problems.

Thanks for the update Matt.

I see your now using the Amplify skin for AB.

Yeah i decided it was time to change from the trusty but boring default. However im now using this blue one. As you're always telling your wife mike good things come in small packages.

An alternative

When you Have afterburner and RadeonPro running sometime Bf3 crashes black screens thanks

Try this first - changing from user mode to kernel mode

If that doesn't work try - Create a profile in rivatuner for bf3.exe, application level detection low, enable compatibility mode. See if that works.

If that doesn't work create a profile for RadeonPro in riva tuner and have the detection level at none or low.
