AMD Kaveri APU Arriving For Desktop PCs in Q4 2013 – Kaveri Graphics Demonstrated With New Virtual R

We all want Kaveri to surprise with it's CPU/GPU punch, we all want it on time and we all want it to slot into Richland pricing. However, this is AMD.

I'd be happy if Kaveri is out this year, and AMD announces Steamroller for AM3+.

With Mantle optimised for 8 cores it looks like they're still very interested in 8 core CPUs and Piledriver FX will look dated as soon as Kaveri's out.

I would think they are going to focus on this once the graphics department has done its bit. If we are lucky and no repeat of the AM3+ shenanigans that could mean end of Oct/ beginning of Nov things move fast.

The thing is the A88X motherboards seem to be quite reasonably priced.

I will be really interested to see how the Kaveri successor to the 65W TDP A10-6700 performs.

I'm looking at throwing together a portable (not too expensive) LAN box using my old TU200 case, and think I'll go an AMD APU for easiness, don't need extreme graphics settings.

Are we still looking at 2014 for the next AMD APU effort coming out, or will there be anything this year?
Will go Richland if there's nothing new coming, but would wait if it's not too long to go!

Would be cool if Kavery could work in CF with something like 7790 to achieve 7970 performance. I really need a new quick processor and I don't want intel.

FX63xx and 83xx chips are good value and fast in absolute terms, if not relative to more expensive offerings from Intel

Didn't it do that in BF3 anyway lol (Pretty sure it did.......)
The Mantle thing is certainly interesting, if it doesn't work on Intel it won't pave away for the "future", if it does work on Intel (With the lower CPU overhead that's touted) there's going to be really no difference in end performance due to the CPU (In theory)

It's all a matter of wait and see.

I've got hopes for Steamroller, I'm half tempted to jump ship if it ends up matching those hopes.

I have a feeling we won't see an eight core SR based CPU,and at least the rumour is that the proper replacement will be Excavator. This would make sense as DDR4 should be cheaper by then.

SR looks like it will be limited to 4 cores without L3 cache,ie,the APUs.

Having said that, the Intel Core i3 CPUs are looking harder and harder sells IMHO.

I can't imagine Excavator will come out on AM3+ either?

Strange move if they do that, they made a fair bit of ground with their Piledriver offerings, another quick successful launch could only be good for their higher end desktop offerings.

If you look at their server roadmap,it seems to indicate a further refined PD based CPU for their highest end parts, with improved performance/watt.

So maybe we will just get a tweaked PD,with higher clockspeeds, maybe some other tweaks and improved power consumption for socket AM3+ next year.

The APU segment is their biggest area for CPU sales,so they are just concentrating on that it seems.

This is AMD, lets not get too excited just yet :p.

Still doesn't make much sense not bringing out SR for the FX8350 replacement.

Because its cheaper??

The vast majority of AMD sales are APUs,and the main reason the FX line exists is down to the server line.

So,if they just extend what they have now, then there is little R and D costs(and other costs) which they need to recoup over a smaller market. Plus they could sell them at lower cost I suspect.

Also I think they won't bother changing that line until DDR4 is released, and not only will the platform probably be new,I suspect there would have to be major changes. For instance one of them would be the replacement of the current Hypertransport technology. IIRC,there was noise that "Freedom Fabric" could be this replacement:

In a separate keynote talk, AMD will announce a follow-on for its HyperTransport processor interconnect. Freedom Fabric aims to link thousands of cores at more than a terabit/second, likely based on technology acquired from SeaMicro.
