AMD "Never Settle" 12.11 Driver - benchmarks

hows that fine ? my 6970 is flittering between 800 and 900 mhz in 2d mode just watching a flash video that means I am using a lot of watts compared to 500mhz where it should be

that means I am using more electricity creating more heat on my gpu whilst watching flash etc when there's no need to I'd rather have my low clocks for flash player back I only want full throttle in 3d games.

have they simply bumped up 7 series 2d clocks to try and fix the issue but have in turn forced other cards to clock up too high ?
well mines ok..

CF 7950 user here (1200 / 1375 @ 1.2), running 5960x1080 on BF3 (bezel compensation enabled).

Settings are textures Ultra, everything else on high, motion blur on, post AA high, 2x msaa. I am using Radeon Pro (awesome) DFC to lock at 60 fps, setting vsync always on and tripple buffering on (these 2 are in game enabled anyway). Finally using danoc 1.3 FXAA injector (this costs around 5-10 fps apparently).

I was getting typically 55 fps, with dips to 45 fps in places.
New drivers, nearly always 60 fps (and I mean nearly always), with occasional dips to low 50's under intense battle scenes.

I can run everything on Ultra & 4x MSAA and still get 50-55 fps in most scenarios!

Overall very impressed.

Im not clued up on GPU idle figures and never checked before.

My 1st 7970 is on idle 500mhz/1375mhz.

Presume this is too high and is whats causing my temp of 49/50c?

yeah at idle it shoud be 300/150mhz shut your browser see if it makes much difference.

well i'm running reference 7970 on the 12.11 betas and 2d clocks are just fine. i'm on 1100/1575 though so still within ccc limits.

Just played a couple of rounds of bf3 on full fat ultra 1920x1080 caspian and kharg i dipped below 60 once, most of the time in the 90s and 100s.

was gonna buy a new cooler for my card, with these drivers i might just put the money towards the next beast amd release...

Nice job amd

I certainly could do with TommyBhoy's expertise on the matter :D.

As your using dual cards, if Rusty and co can tell you that Sli works in every 3D title, then I'd say stump up the cash for 3D surround.

There is a few titles that don't work well in 3D with CrossFire(they all work in single mode)-Alan Wake(although Nightmares is fine:confused:), Kingdom of Amalur and Warhammer Marines(but they both run fine is single gpu mode anyway), the other 25+ or so I've tried work well though.

As Rusty said your going to take a hit selling your gpu's on-although the 7970 deals are mighty good at the moment, along with the 23" Sammy SA700(NEEDS Dual Link DVI, lightnings don't do D-LDVI:(), other Sammys have DP so it may not be an issue.

Tridef just works, it's surprisingly good if not pretty excellent- the polar opposite as was made out here.

Sure there is a couple of tips you could do with knowing if you went down that route, but on the whole, loving it.

You can always go Tridef on your 680's with the Sammy too(comes bundled), but your locked to 720p with Nvidia gpu's as Nvidia won't let them do 120Hz FS:(.

After lots of thought, I suppose going the Tridef route enables me to go 3D regardless of AMD/Nvidia so that's a plus in my book as your not tied to any of the two.

@Dave,

thanks for the clocks info, looks like I'm flicking the switch to the Ghz one to try these drivers-you just gotta love dual bios switches.:D

@Matt, check your mail, I sent you a GHz bios, 2D clocks are 300/150MHz :).
*Came back and edited this for you after I sent the bios and tested it out.*

@C64,

Why don't you roll back to your last stable driver instead of playing about with a 7 series optimisation/performance Beta driver that won't have any performance boosts for the 69's?:)

I maybe should have listened to you mate and stayed with team red. If 3D is as decent and as well supported on AMD and if I can get a good screen (Tommy help lol?). I'd even think about selling the 680 Lightnings in favour of 7970 Lightnings.

I play in 3D surround and have no probs at all. It is just a case of clicking 'enable 3D' or 'disable 3D' I have not found a game that doesnt work in 3D surround and they all look sweet as with it. Nvidia maybe lazy but 3D works very well (this is not to say it doesn't on AMD).

I mainly play 3D now as normal gaming bores me but games like Trine/2/Alan Wake/Crysis 2/Portal 2 to mention but a few look stunning. I love 3D and it does make gaming a whole lot better IMO.

Can't argue with any of that gregster:D, is the scaling all good in 3D mate or are any of them poor(in comparison to 2D)?

Whatever you decide JD, give 3D a try, fling in both teams buzz words- 'The Way It's Meant To Be Played' or 'Gaming Evolved' that's what 3D gaming is all about.;)

In case anyone missed my edit( #312) regarding 2D clocks on reference 7970's, the Ghz bios has normal 2D clocks.

Just installed 12.10 and all is ok, was a little worried about the NET Framework 4.
As i play EVE a lot i use EVEMon which uses NET Framework 4.
If NET Framework 4 is not installed EVEMon will download it and install it for you but i found it time consuming.

So when it was time to do a fresh install of windows due to my OCing i thought I would download and install NET Framework 4 first from MS, but upon installing EVEMon it still said that i didn't have the relevant NET Framework 4 and it downloaded NET Framework 4, so it maybe an idea to install EVEMon and see if it grabs NET Framework 4 again as it seems that NET Framework 4 can be an issue with CCC not opening up.

You can then uninstall EVEMon.

Thank you Tommy. It looks like I'll just stick with Nvision then as I'd rather not be limited to 720p. I've been following your posts about 3D with AMD. It was your glowing reports that have led me to my doubt.

What about this?. http://www.mtbs3d.com/index.php?opt...s-vg278h-3d-monitor-review&catid=39&Itemid=77

Only thing is if I went with Asus then it's £1500 for the three monitors. After just forking out £1100 so far on 2 GPUs, a PSU, a keyboard, and with the VG278H to buy, an extra set of glasses and a new mouse, another £1000 for the two other screens might not be feasible till after the year.

Must be sweet to be covered no matter what GPU you're using (AMD/Nvidia) :). Thank you Tommy, I know you're reasonable and honest. It's why I hoped for your input.

You've sold me!. I'll maybe have until after Christmas for the other two screens though. :D Thank you, hopefully I'll order at the end of the week.

Thank you Tommy. With me only getting 720p with the Samsung it's best I just get one screen for now and add as the money becomes available. Thank you lads (Gregster, Rusty, Tommy) ;).

Tommy, thanks for sending me that bios. Sadly it didnt work, the card still wont fully clock down but at least i have a ghz edition card now. :D
