AMD or Intel

i currently have a AMD x2 5200, Foxcon AM2 board, 4GB DDR2 and an 8600GT this all needs upgrading. im gonna be getting pretty much whole new setup. Looking to get ATI 4850 and a new board that can run DDR2 and 3 but im not sure what CPU to get cause Ive read that the AMDs are pap and that im best off gettin an Intel but they cost so much. I dont really want to spend more than £200 on a board and CPU.

You cant get boards that run DDR2 and DDR3. Well ive never seen or heard of them anyway.
AMD arent a bad choice, especially if your on a budget.

This would serve you well -

Best Chip for games is a GTX295! (oh, or a 4870x...)

I would have thought any modern 3+gig CPU will be good for games, as it's the GPU that rakes in the frames. I have Intel QX9650, but at that time - 18 months ago, AMD wasn't really in the frame so much, but I'd still pick Intel - myself...;)

My mate has 1 that does but its for a Intel board

Do you know if that board can accept AM3 chips? . . . You may be able to do an incremental upgrade i.e swap out your older CPU and older GPU and replace them with a new CPU/GPU?

I think AM2 is not upgradable, but AM2+ can accept AM3

An AM2+ socket can take an AM3 CPU, just double check the compatibility with your motherboard manufacturer.

I thought that was the greatest appeal of the AM3 chips, the fact an existing AM2+ user could pop out his old chip and plug in a new AM3 processor, very easy and convenient! :)

Yes AM3 chip being socketed into an AM2+ board was one of the appeals.
However, it was more to do with the actual pricing of building an AMD based rig.

This, however, isn't going to be the case anymore. The i5's will be competing with the AMD on the same market and it'll be a hard one for AMD to stomach as i5's are supposed to produce the same level of performance as the i7 920 when it comes to gaming, it runs a lot cooler (hence why it's so overclockable), it is also very competitively priced.

so the best option is to wait till after xmas when the i5s are kicking and then see whats what between the AMD and the Intel

Maybe . . . . there is always the option of buying a used AM3 chip from someone who upgrades to Core i5 . . . Deduct the price of what you get for your old AM2 chip and it could be easy on the pocket!

yeah but my AM2 is only worth like £20 now so i was just gonna sell my old cpu, mbo, gfx all together to someone for about £70 and then they just need a case or just put it in theirs

Something which may make things change is the new Graphics cards coming out within the next month or so from AMD/ATI & Nvidia after Christmas in terms of CPU scaling - interesting times.

I was all up for upgrading to P55 chipset cpu's a few weeks ago but now I'm thinking whats the point when I can run any game no problem, may as well just spend more money on a newer graphics cards when they come out.

Upgrade my CPU when AMD launch new chipset/CPU's next year maybe depending on how good they are in comparision to P55 chipset cpu's.

Which CPU & AM2 motherboard do you have? it's possible the motherboard maybe compatable for AM3 CPU's like the Phenom II X4 955 BE - depending how good the CPU you have now it might be just worth upgrading the CPU.

MY mbo cant do AM3 ive tried i dont understand why it just cant and a have a 5200 x2
I would wait a couple of weeks at least till i5/P55 chipset released, it's quite possible AMD will introduce a price drop on their CPU's to counteract the competition from Intel.

You can get an AM2 motherboard compatable with AM3 CPU's for around £45 - £60 OR an AM3 785 chipset motherboard for £70 or less.

I would just wait & see if you can. :)

well, i know that you're posting in the CPU and upgrade dept, but right now right now you can just up your graphics card I think- thats what most of the bottleneck is going to be if you game....

AM3 works in AM2+ because it has both DDR2 and DDR3 memory controllers. AM2+ does not work in AM3 boards because it doesn't have the DDR3 memory controller.
