Hi I currently have a fx-4100 OC to 4.1Ghz. I want to upgrade but should I stick with AMD or switch to Intel? My board is an ASUS m5a78l-m/usb3

You'll want to pretty much replace the whole rig bar graphics. I'd wait a few months for Intel's new Skylake chips. Previous gen prices will drop if you are on a budget.

+1. Wait for 5-6 weeks for Intel's mighty new Skylake to launch for an awesome upgrade and all the latest technologies.

Don't bet on a price drop. Ivybridge didn't drop when Haswell came out and I doubt if Haswell will drop when Skylake launches as they will want to keep upgraders paying a premium who already have DDR3 and don't want to make the switch to a new socket and DDR4.

Need to know budget and what you use the PC for before we can make useful recommendations.

+1

Please list your full specs including monitor and typical usage.

Will cost a fair whack to upgrade to intel but if you normally game on a 1080p 60hz monitor with a R9 270 you would probably be better off dropping a FX6300 in there or 8320e in there.

Also, do you WANT to upgrade or do you NEED to upgrade?

I have a R9 280 gpu, 1080p 60hz monitor 8GB vengeance RAM. I can stretch my budget up to £400 if I want to change to Intel but not sure whether I will be getting a good enough board and cpu, or stick with AMD and get a 8320e?

Also I feel the cpu is holding me back in games I find some games the frame rate is lower than the benchmarks for the gpu.

I would pop a 8370E in there(and overclock it), And maybe add a R9 290 or 970/980 to fit the Budget...

and then wait for Skylake chips or Zen and go from there

Problem with your board you don't have any heatsinks on the cpu VRM'S and this will course higher end AMD cpu's to throttle.

So you think I should switch to Intel?

Intel i5 4690K + a decent board will cost around £250
AMD FX 8320e + decent board will cost around £200

Wait for skylake to drop and look at the options.

The FX series is not a good option right now as there's no upgrade path.

Shame your board can't handle anything better than your current CPU.
