AMD or Pentium Dual-core

i dont really want to wait until prices come down for the c2d as i need something now that can perform well with an 8800

As you specced a high end graphics card, I would definatly say the AMD, as up until the Core 2 was released AMD ruled the 'gaming' benchmarks.

C2D would beat them both easily though, and the prices should be coming down a lot in Q2 (probably near the end of april).

But if you cant wait, then the AMD would be the faster system for gaming. The only advantage for the P4 would be the ability to swap the processor for a C2D as an upgrade when you are more happy with the prices, assuming you bought a C2D compatible motherboard... which is virtually all 'new' boards.

thats not strictly true, nobody ever mentions this but C2D and AMD X2s aren't at all far apart at stock speeds, for instance a E6300 at stock is 120GBP, and 4200+ is a little cheaper, the 4200+ runs at 2.2Ghz and the E6300 at 1.86Ghz, if hes not overclocking theres gonna be virtually no difference in performance, so for someone not overclocking either will do

ok then ill be going for the AMD, ill probably upgrade to the Core 2 Quadro in a few months, or the AMD X4, what ever is cheaper

Quite true, but then AMD slashed the prices of the X2's to make that true. When Core 2 was released the E6300 only needed to compete with the X2 3800, and it was a winner there.

Intel will do the same when Barcalona is released, slashing the prices on Core Duo's as they attempt to retain price/performance. (Plus increasing FSB, and adding a 3Ghz model to try and compete for top performance too)

I'd love to upgrade to the X2 series of AMD from my 3000+, but the prices seem to be going up by the hour  The X2 3800+ was like £92 inc VAT last week, nows its £117 inc VAT! Us skt 939 users are getting fleeced!

It's really not worth getting a 939 cpu brand new. You already know this :) They're draw a lot more power than the equivalent Socket2 AMD also. Not sure how they compare power-wise to C2D.

Next time I upgrade my cpu (unless I can get an x2 3800+ dirt cheap 2nd hand), it will be with new ram and mobo too. Such is life.

ok im going to go for the C2D E6300, what would be a good mobo thats dual channel DDR2-800 and is <£80, i dont plan on overclocking so a good overclocker isnt needed.

Please for the love of sanity get a 4200 X2 939. You can just drop it into your current system and keep your current RAM and motherboard. Saves so much hassle and money.
