You should be alright using this app, take a moment to sus out which sensor shows the CPU temps . . .

If your looking at the right sensor then the CPU temp should be the same as the CPU temp from the BIOS . . . I'm still not sure if this is a sensor within the processor or a sensor in the CPU socket . . .
55°C from hwmonitor is ok I think bearing in mind your hammering the processor with a "synthetic" workload to represent the Worst-Case-Scenario and your unlikey to encounter a load like this in Real-Word usage like gaming etc . . . although apps that load all the cores like encoding will come close!
Are you using the stock cooler? . . . also are you using full [Auto] voltages? . . . can you list your relavant specs please?

Athlon II X3 440 unlocked to Phenom II X4 B40.
I looked at the CPU temp in the BIOS before I started these tests and it was around 40c/41c. I'll reboot and check if it gives the same as Hardware Monitor is giving. The temp on hardware monitor just appears to be stuck at 55c. It's not fluctuating at all.

CPU temp is at 47c according to the BIOS. I'm going to leave things for the time being. I've run Prime95 for nearly an hour, passed LinX and temps don't seem too bad as you say considering the various tests.
I'll do the direct comparison between X3 440 and X4 B40 tomorrow using the links you provided.

15 minutes later and hwmonitor has CPU temp back down to 37c. I feel better now! It still won't give me reading for each individual core though.

it has never been possible to get readings for each separate core with these chips . . . you may be thinking of Intel® Core™2 processors that had a DTS sensor built into each core!
Looks like from your basic testing the unlocked core is fairly stable! . . . nice one! . . . have a read of this thread from start to finish if you need more help . . . you may need better cooling if you decide to overclock bit . . . for now you seem good!

I've just run Futuremark and Cinebench before and after unlock of the X3 440.
Cinebench:-
Before unlock - OpenGL =4.96. CPU = 2.34pts
After unlock - OpenGL = 4.95. CPU = 3.10pts
3DMark06:-
Before unlock - 3DMark score = 2206. CPU = 3350pts
After unlock - 3DMark score = 2192. CPU = 4067pts
Interestingly (or not), when the X3 440 was unlocked, there appeared to be a smallish drop in gfx 'performance'. I've been using the onboard 4250. It'd be interesting to see any drop when using a reasonable GFX card.
All in all, it's worth unlocking.

Just set-up a M4A88TD-V Evo and X3 440 for a friend. Unlocked 4th core from first boot and it's been fine for all stress/stability tests.
Results pretty much inline with fozzybears, even down to the temperatures.
That stock cooler is a bit of a nightmare... :| Roll on aftermarket cooler upgrade for phase II of this build.
Haven't clocked yet due to the stock cooler but am very impressed with the performance of this chip so far, when you factor in the £60 cost, it's great value.
Thoroughly recommend this motherboard also, very nice bios, good feature set and nice layout.

It's hard to get this message across . . . I mean it's a £60 processor . . . it can't be any good can it! . . . . I sat there scratching my head for days last Nov (2009) after "upgrading" from a Intel® Core™2 Duo E8400 @ 4GHz to an AMD® Athlon™ II X3 @ 3.6GHz and thought the AMD® was faster, ended up with nearly £100 more in my pocket after the upgrade . . . WTF!
I do love the IMC on these chips, it's AMD®'s special thing innit!

Everything is stable and tested with Prime 95 @2.8ghz. Anyone think that if I had better memory like the Kingston Hyper X 1333mhz DDR3, then would be able to OC past 3ghz?? or should I up the core voltage? Over 2.9ghz is not stable.

Can I just ask, what exact memory are you using? . . . I'm looking at the [SPD] tab in your screenie and see Samsung but I can't be sure what its max rated speed is?

Did you try to lower the HT-Link/CPU-NB multi down from [x10] to something lower like x9 or x8?

I've unlocked the 4th core & overclocked to 3.5 GHz on STOCK VCORE?!? Is this normal, my C3 stepping 965 can do 3.8 on its stock Vcore but thats 1.4 volts. Its pretty cool running as well, it'll do a 10 pass IBT Torture Test whilst remaining whisper quiet (no point in having a HTPC that sounds like I put Vantec Tornadoes in it is there?) My Thermalright SI-128 with a Noctua NF-S12B FLX (possibly not the best choice due to its low static pressure) seems to be doing a decent job but I've got a feeling that as soon as I start increasing Vcore (if I do) the fan is going to limit me.
Has anyone else got any experience overclocking this low voltage AMD CPU's? I'm not interested in pushing the ragged edge (my watercooled 965 is for that stuff), just wondering how other people are getting on with these seemingly amazing little chips
I have to say I'm delighted with mine, £50 from China via a certain online 'auction' site (I do usually make my PC purchases through Oc-UK)

319 HT ref.clock is a nice result from your mobo . . . and you got a "free" extra core also! . . . very jammy . . . hope its stable! . . . enjoy!
Cheers mate, I wasn't expecting anything special from the mobo but I've been VERY pleasantly surpised. That said my experiences with Asus have always been good in that respect. Pity there aren't many people posting about these CPU's cos if my experience happens to be the norm then the X3 'e' series are pretty special. The best bit about it is the daft low vcore, I'll try & sort out some prime screenies etc in the next few days.

Hey Big Wayne, been a little busy lately.. did try your suggestion of lowering the HT-Link/CPU-NB but seems that it does'nt like that mixture. I'm sure its the ram holding the overclock back as it is only basic PC3-8500 laptop ram. I'm looking at purchasing some of the Hyper X Kingston ram and will update if there is success.
1979Damian the X3 'e' series are actually great chips considering the very low TDP. Hope you got yours stable.

the chip wont do anymore than 225fsb at all, am pretty sure the ECS mobo is causing the trouble, she'll sit at 3.2Ghz all day long but trying to get 3.3Ghz or higher just wont work
any idea's or suggestions, this was done with the bundled overclocking software for the board, i've looked through the bios and urgh, lost completely i tried upping what looked like the fsb clk but machine wouldnt boot until i cleared the cmos

An AMD® Athlon™ II X2 @ 3.65GHz with a 1GB Radeon HD 4870 sounds nice for a HTPC!

Installed a few quiet fans into my Silverstone LC13-E too, so all running nice and cool as well. Prime95 couldn't get more than 45 degrees outta my CPU which frankly gobsmacked me - still, can't grumble!!
Dirt2 at 1080p is looking sweet as on the HDTV now
