AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

Hello all,

I have some test results to share which may or may not be useful, although these results are taken from an off topic AIIX3425 chip I'm thinking the same principles will still apply with the Phenom™ II

All I have done is run 3DMark03 standard test with the chip at stock, then performed a mild OC on both the CPU/Mem by raising the HT ref. Clock from 200MHz to 250MHz and lowering both the CPU-NB & HT multi from x10 to x8 to keep them at stock, then another test with the CPU-NB multi reset back to X10 (clocking it from 2.0GHz to 2.5GHz) and a final test with the HT multi also set back to x10 (clocking it from 2.0GHz to 2.5GHz).

The IGP wasn't clocked as I was just wanting to see if I could trace the system changes, I should have run several different tests/apps with these different settings but I didn't have the spare time! :p

So there is definitely some speed increases going on but as I'm using an IGP I'm not sure if these gains are due to the IGP's subsystem getting a boost? . . . would be interesting to run these tests again with a dedicated GPU to see how things worked out! :)

Here a percentage view of the gains, the numbers in brackets are the % boost from the stock system and the greyed numbers are the % boost from the previous results . . .

  • 4266
  • 4481 (+5.04%)
  • 4670 (+9.47%) +4.21%
  • 4818 (+12.94%) +3.16%

Hey eddyc,

I think Fritz is pretty much *processor* only? . . . i.e I don't think it shoves gigabytes of data backwards and forwards like some other tests? . . . you could test this theory by seeing if the Fritz scores jump up and down noticeably as you raise and lower the CPU multi only! :)

Nice unlock and good clock btw!

So both eddyc & PhoenixUK running AMD® Phenom™ II X2 555 BE @ X4 3.8GHz! :D

That's sweet value for money £££ . . . Try and post up some Prime Blending screenies when you get time! :)

Hey gurusan, I'm not sure the IMC is powered in the same way as the newer Intel stuff? . . . at least I'm not aware of any connection between the vDimm voltage and the onchip IMC i.e I think you can set any vDimm you like without worrying about any knock-on effect to the IMC :)

gareth170, hows it going? :) . . nice result, don't forget your name in the screenies and watch the excessive quoting! ;)

Sorry to hear about the hospital visits, hopefully the sun shine will help lift the spirits a little! :)

Re: the quoting stuff, I don't want to labour the point too much but it makes the thread nicer & easier to read if people don't include a quote if they are replying to a post directly above their reply (or at least edit it down to minimum!) . . . I know this happens a lot in 99.9% of other threads but I am trying a new approach for this particular "resource" (it's about the people that read this thread after us more than us!) . . .

I illustrated this concept for you (or anyone else) in the image below, thanks in advance for your cooperation !

  • Wayne: Hello Gareth How are you?
  • Gareth: Hello Gareth How are you? I'm fine thanks Wayne just doing some clocking!
  • Wayne: Err, oh cool, did you managed to crack that 4GHz clock yet?
  • Gareth: Err, oh cool, did you managed to crack that 4GHz clock yet? no no I didn't feel the need as 3.8GHz seems to mince through my tasks nicely
  • Wayne: Hey man how come your repeating everything I say before you say something? it's kinda weird? :D
  • Gareth: Hey man how come your repeating everything I say before you say something? it's kinda weird? :D Hey that's how I talk? whats your problem?
The poor blind/visually impaired sight folks who are listening to this thread must be having a hard time understanding the conversation, they can switch off the sigs but I don't think their audio software deals with superflous quotes as well! . . . It's just a polite request and nothing more!

only 1 person has an issue with it :)
Are you talking about yourself or me? :D

I'm only thinking of others! :)

Fella, If I invite you into my home and ask you politely to take off you shoes it would probably be universally acceptable behaviour to follow the hosts requests!

This is not just any old thread, this is a thread I have created to be a precise, interesting and above all else a *fun* resource and hang-out, every single person that has joined so far has understood my requests and tried to accommodate them, I'm not asking much . . . just want AMD® Phenom™ II hardware related chatter, friendly cooperative vibes and a feeling of goodwill amongst all the contributors, *named* technical screenies and lots of Prime95 Blending! :)

The strength of this thread (and threads like this) come weeks/months/years later, it can have a nice flow all the way through and will be nice to read, the excessive quoting really bugs me and generally just *bloats* the reading! :(

To everyone else, sorry about this, I don't want to detract from the main thread with this bickering with gareth170 (we have a history) but this quoting thing takes away from my enjoyment of the thread and diminishes it as a resource that can be printed and listened too . . . . and if gareth170 won't back down neither will I, this off topic nonsense could go on for pages . . . If anyone can intervene and resolve this I would be grateful! :p

Holy cow! . . . just got home and found I've taken delivery of a big brown box, compliments of AMD® for you guys! :D

I started unpacking it but I got excited and stopped, just wanted to savour the moment and imagine it was something uBer! :p

Hello again, just read one or two people have been having problems with BSOD's, I know how you feel as I've been trouble-shooting a seemingly random blue screen myself . . . even after a fresh install with the system at stock, all hardware tested rigorously (RAM, Chip, PSU, Disk etc) but had no joy, was getting a reboot once every week while playing audio, DVD's etc, normally after I took a video or audio track off pause . . . *Blue Screen!*

Anyway it seems the problem was a VIA HD audio driver issue on a ASUS M4A785D-M PRO running Windows XP Pro (SP/3) and followed some tips and force-installed a MS update (kb888111) which seems to have done the trick! :)

While trouble-shooting I came across this tool which proved to be quite handy, check it out!

BlueScreenView v1.20

Elfmeister, I didn't know the Radeon® HD4200 IGP could be disabled actually? . . . I will have to have a snoop at the BIOS as I didn't really give it a good check through since updating it! :D

The box is full of [unknown booty] for the next wave of freebies from AMD® for contributers to the thread!

Nice work gurusan! . . . that's a great HT ref. you got running there! :)

I'd be interested to hear your feedback on how you feel the new build is handling your *personal* workload, impressions etc!

I think gurusan is using a AMD® Phenom™ II X3 705e, unlocked to X4 (i.e non BE) . . .

Although give him a few weeks, I'm sure he will have tested almost every AM3 chip under the sun! :D

gareth170, I gather you are having a sporadic stability issue with Prime Blend? . . . I'm not 100% sure of what's going on but maybe you could make a more detailed post explaining the issue in depth, what you tried etc, maybe someone else in the team will spot something or be able to suggest a possible fix? :)

Hehe, how funny! :D

Just sorted out all the freebies from AMD®, an eclectic bunch of paraphernalia/memorabilia to say the least! . . . I love it! :p

  • AMD® Collectible Ruby On Snowboard Figurine x5
  • AMD® Blank Overclocking Journal x5
  • AMD® Fusion Mousemat x5
  • AMD® Telescopic Umbrella x5
  • AMD® Key Chain x10
  • AMD® Dragon System-Sticker x5
  • AMD® Lip Balm x5 :D

I'm not sure how to divvy this lot up amoungst the threads contributers? . . . . I'm thinking of either making it into five lots consisting of Figurine + Bits, or if interest is sufficient then maybe doing five lots of a figurine and another 5 lots of bits?

Anyway send us an email at the address above with subject: AMD Freebie 002 if there is anything you are interested in and I'll sort it out as best I can!

Ah how annoying!

Can I ask what speed the CPU/CPU-NB/HT-Link is running in this testing? . . . also did you check out that BlueScreenView linked above in post #485 . . . not that it will fix the problem but may clarify if your getting the same error (assuming these crashes you been having are indeed bluescreens?) . . .
