AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

Oh dear, if it's a memory related problem they can be very tiresome to trouble-shoot, the sticks could be 99.99999% working but that 0.000001% fault can hide away from nearly everything except Prime Blend?

Dunno what to suggest really, seems the Blue screens are at least consistent, I'm also wondering what else it can be apart from the memory?

did you read this thread through from the beginnning? :)

Any chance we can see a picture of your box?, it sounds like *maybe* you been sent the wrong product?

this is a small thread still (less than 600 posts), I've sat down to read threads that are 5000 posts long and thats hard work! :D

Anyway bearing that in mind I am trying to make this thread better than any others in the past in terms of usability/readability and there are plenty of technical screenshots for you to use a reference as well as lots of nice posts, as an incentive there are a few *freebies* from AMD® hidden throughout so there even more reason to put some time aside and get reading! :p . . . to help you on your way there is a basic starter guide for you in post #44

@everyone else:
I'm sure some of you guys know this but perhaps some of you don't, if you visit your OcUK User-CP (control panel) you can change the thread display options to show 80+ posts each page! . . . it makes a big difference so if you haven't gone 80+ then now is the time!

I wonder what O/S joewm18 is using? . . . Windows XP doesn't set-up Cool n Quiet automatically . . . . unless you install all the stuff from the mobo CD-ROM, so I'm thinking it's maybe Vista/Windows 7?

Having said that I've not used an AMD under Windows 7 but does that "organise" C n Q by default?

gurusan & eddyc
Sorry to snoop guys but I have a question, can you tell me how much the *combined* cost of your processors & motherboard were please? . . . anyone else is welcome to spill the beans but I'm particularly interested to hear from those lucky folks that got a nice *unlock* and have an X4 running at 3.3GHz+ . . . . I'm thinking CPU/Mobo was approx £150 or so? :)

AMD® Temps

I'm interested to know what people's thoughts are about temperature monitoring on these chips? . . . I know some people use the Core measurement while others use the TMPIN0 as a guide but personally I'm still not decided which one is more accurate? :D

If anyone has some *technical* info on this subject that would be good, I'd like to know where the sensors are that pick up both readings . . . thanks in advance!

Hey ~>Dg<~, I wonder if that is because your GPU is getting hot and passing it's temps straight onto the CPU . . . I say this because I'm swapping between a GPU and IGP every few weeks or so and I notice how much hotter the CPU gets with a GPU installed, kinda makes sense when you think about it!

Stability:

I think it's fair to say everyone has their own ideas of what is stable it is up to each separate person to set their own stability targets . . . . the problem comes from one overclocker proclaiming on the Internet that his system is "Stable" and not "Stable enough for me" :D

It's semantics really but you can see the problem. The thing that worries me is the "heated" discussions that spawn out of this simple enough misunderstanding in the meaning of a word . . . .

I don't see it's gonna change anytime soon unless all the overclockers agree on what a word means . . . another problem here is some overclockers are more patient than others and I doubt anyone actually enjoys stability testing . . . at least I don't but compared to getting really involved in a gaming session and having your PC reboot/Freeze/Explode! just after you taken down that oh-so-hard end of level baddy then spending a few days stability testing doesn't seem so bad! :p

My PC just rebooted after 20 hours of Prime95 Blend, haha how annoying!

I just been delving back through the thread looking for some info and I came across one of your posts I missed (#443) . . . I know it's not funny but I LMAO when I read the problems you were having, especially the bit about clocking the chip so hard your PC "Shut Down" and wouldn't boot at all until you removed the CPU!!:D

Loadline Calibration (LLC)
Deffo need to get time to experiment with this feature as I'm getting more vCore ripple than I like . . . . on the later LGA775 boards Loadline Calibration only had three options [Auto] [Enabled] [Disabled] so it's interesting too see all the different % of LLC. I see a few of you guys have played around with this? . . . I just read eddyc's post (#624) where he suggests 16%/19% as a good starting point? . . . . also is this a universal feature amongst all the AM2+/AM3 boards and if so have most people left theirs set to [auto]?

I'm dealing with an assault of vDrop, vDroop and McRipple! :p

Hey all, trying to get all the bits n bobs sent out although I can only carry so much to work every day! :D . . . thanks for the photo gurusan as I didn't get too see how the brolly looked when open, not too shabby! :)

Just gonna get that LLC article read and have some dinner I think . . . . PhoenixUK I'm not sure what's irking you so much but you sound a bit riled to me? :D . . . don't worry about it . . . . I'm hoping we can keep this thread as chilled as possible although I'm aware we all have a bad day! ;) . . . anyway lets increase the peace and happy clocking all!

@ All, please feel free to direct any new thread members to the "Welcome" post . . . I'll just highlight one bit again as I feel quite strongly about this . . .

"I would just like to inform you there is every possibility that this thread will be viewed by a lot of people around the world including maybe representatives from AMD® etc . . . I am hoping we can demonstrate what fantastic, friendly and capable bunch of overclockers the crew @ OcUK are"

Basically all contributers to this thread are representing OcUK forums to the World so lets try out best to have as much "unity" as possible

Hey Gareth, nice to see your still sane after the past few days of troubleshooting you been going through! :p . . . I'm very excited at the prospect of you getting that chip up to 4GHz, I know you been edging towards it the past month or two! :) . . . I wish I could help you with getting the DDR3 tweaked but I'm still on AM2+/DDR2 so anything beyond DDR2-1200 is beyond my comprehension at this time! :o

I've been having some similar weird BSODs to yourself where one time Prime Blend works fine and the next run it's blue-screen-city (at the same voltage), basically inconsistent results with no "obvious" reasons why?

Is this the same BSOD as you have been getting?

hwmonitor114.gif

A few questions for you:

  1. Which O/S have these BSODs been occuring in? (both Win xp & Win 7 64bit or?)
  2. Have you manually done anything with the AMD® processor drivers?
  3. Were you running "HWMonitor_114" during testing when the BSOD occured?

Gareth, I am wondering if its possible for you to do some testing *without* running hwmonitor? . . . I'm only working on a hunch but I am suspicious that it is causing a problem? . . . do you have an item in device Manager (system devices) named ATK0110 ACPI UTILITY? . . . I think it may be an ASUS only thing but would be handy if you could check please! :)

Also one last question, is your PC connected directly to the wall socket or do you have some kinda surge-protector/multi-pug thingamajig? :D

Uriel, yeah I check Event Viewer a lot although I don't see any nasties in there. What is it you are seeing in there? yellow or red warning type things or?

I'm on tenderhooks at the moment, been running a blend since 2:00am last night, just passed the point where it rebooted before (20 hours), now 22 hours! . . . really hoping this passes, only thing I changed since the last run was a slight increase in vCore and didn't use hwmonitor (just core temp) . . .
