AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

Pardon the rookie question please guys, but I've noticed people in this thread all seem to use Prime95 blend, where I've always gone for the maximum CPU option.

Is blend a significantly better test of stability, and is it safe to use that as your guide to maximum practical running temperature? I'm not sure whether anything other than CPU burn applications would actually pump out so much heat, maybe I'm working under an artificial ceiling :)

Thanks

Interesting, blend always runs about 5 degrees cooler for me, I assumed it was less stressful on the CPU - maybe I just haven't let it go on far enough?

I hate turning my cooling fans up, so I tend to edge towards thermal limits rather than struggle for stability. Knowing what it'll top out at under a "worst case" real world application is useful in finding my top overclock :)

Hi eddiew, that question has been discussed quite a bit already in this thread and is probably a subject we shouldn't revisit too much! :p . . . how much of this thread have you read btw? :) (please read the "welcome" post here). . . everyone has their own standards of stability, even though I use all the diagnostics I haven't used the Prime Small FFTs test as Blend seems to hammer the chip pretty good (inc the IMC) . . . Your right in as much that the actual day-to-day running of your machine will most likely not be so "stressful" but it's generally good practice to "simulate" the worst case scenarios if your a Mad Scientist! :D

It's not just about the heat, it's also about the ability of the machine to perform "precise" mathamatical function while under immense pressure!

Righto mate, I'll hush up now - I must confess I only read the last few pages, lol I only have so much time before the boss gets to work :] But now I know its there I'll go find it :)

Figured I'd give in and do Big.Wayne a favour.
Here's my 4GHZ Prime blend 8 hour stability testing.
Currently been going on for over an hour as can be seen by picture, I've jacked up the voltages a little higher than needed, this is to simulate my cooling handling higher temperatures than needed (I'll fine tune this when I can).

I'll do updates, and WILL get a full 8 hour blend.

Good luck Martini1991! :) . . . obviously we won't be needing five screenshots of the same Blend session! I'd say at this point in the thread a minimum blend should be 4 hours although I'd rather people waited the full 8 hours! . . . P.S: don't forget to include your name in the screenies please!

Martini1991, considering how long you owned that chip I'm suprised to not see a mega prime blend result from you yet . . . . seen the IBT's and other good stuff but no blend! ;)

We all know why :p

Big.Wayne, i've not been doing much as been really sick this week. i was talking to my gf afew minutes which .. now im feeling alittle better so hopefully i'll get back to testing tomorrow or saturday.
