AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

Just tried again before, and upped the multi to 17.5x 3.5ghz, then tried the blend test. almost straight away i had a bsod, so i then upped the cpu voltage, and kept getting bsod's. only when i finally reached 1.4250v, was i able to start going through the blend tests. but at that voltage, my cpu temp reached 55degrees after 10mins, and would probably have went higher. obviously i don't want to be going over 55.

Think i best stick at 3.2ghz for a while.

Well, two days after changing my idle speed from 600 back up to it's 800 default... not a reboot or BSOD has been had! I'm sure there's an interesting lesson about the minimum clock speeds for an architecture in there, and why there is one...

NB voltage lowered to a more typical 1.225, now re-priming.

*edit* question for the team; does your Phenom perform CnQ frequency changes over all cores, or just one? I can manually desynchronise them and force particular frequencies, but CnQ punts them all up together even when there's just 1 heavy thread... feels wasteful, would be nice to find a more efficient "just one core to full speed, others at idle" approach.

Gilbert - 1.4250 sounds about right for that speed. You should not be getting temps that high though. You are using an h-50 right? That seems much too high... Are you sure it is seated correctly? What is the rest of your set up like? Case fans etc? What TIM are you using?

Eddiew - it would be very cool to force cool'n'quiet to do something like the turbo feature seen on the new X6s (only with all cores rather than just some - and being able to lower the multi as well as raise). Will be very interested if it is possible. Not sure I even have a program capable of monitoring the multipliers on each chip individually

CoreTemp seems to monitor them, and K10Stat can set them (and have the changes show up in CoreTemp) :)

There's an option in K10Stat to let it control the cpu frequency, I'm going to have a go with that tonight and see if it can do them asynchronously :D

First go at OC'ing my new 965BE:

More to come :D

Did I just get a poor 550 be, mine wont unlock any cores, and doesnt seem to want to go above 3.5 ghz. bit dissapointed really but unless i have missed something as I am newb to AM3 cpu's ?

Mobo is Asus M4A79XTD evo btw

Vogonif thats true you are extremely unlucky. I have that motherboard and managed to unlock me 555BE to a quad, and OC it to 3.6ghz which is stable at the moment. Might bump it up abit more.

Aye, just was hoping I had missed something in settings.
I noticed on OcUK that the quads "support ddr 1333 memory", can they handle 1600, as this dual is doing ?
And what is the diference between an mbox quad and an ibox (amd part number) ?

Martini1991:

VID is 1.4000V, had a check while it was still at stock. However it seems that is rather playing it on the 'safe side' as it primed at stock at 1.3V.

3.8 takes 1.36V, passed a 2hr prime session no fuss.

Not tried anything else yet as I'd only just finished building and getting Win7 back installed.

Going to try for the magical 4GHz tonight. I'll worry about HT and CPU-NB after :D

It just seems i've got a lot of temp and volt headroom...

Meh, i'll try for 4, if it doesn't happen i'm happy with 3.8 and i'll just try and get the HT, CPU-NB cranked up instead :D

I'm more surprised I managed to get 8GB going @ 1600 :D

Just gave it a 2hr blast while I was watching V :D Passed that no fuss.

Set it off to do a longer prime this morning while I'm at work, so I'll see if that's still going when I get in.

If so I'll be going for 4.

@ Vogon

I tried 4 550's not one succesfully unlocked to a quad, one did manage x3 but the others behaved oddly, and its taken two attempts at getting a 555 to unlock but luckily got lucky, its a bit hit or miss im afraid

Unlock chances seem to be getting worse for both 550 and 555.

Maybe AMD started out by releasing loads that will unlock at the beginning to get the hype up and then returned to the normal ones..
