AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

Deffinately the Barum is a much better cooler than the freezer 7 but Its twice the price and does not come with fans so its worth bearing that in mind.. Is it worth spending out to gain a couple of hundred mghz,s which you would not notice in games anyway.....

Guess you're right. I pretty much only game on the PC and the 965 runs cool enough for that anyway (low-mid 40's). It's just when I hit it with Prime it starts firing up and temps climbing. Even if I clock it to 4ghz I doubt I'd see a difference in gaming FPS anyway. Perhaps a couple of FPS at most as the CPU is rarely stressed.

But anyway, I will buy the Barum as it's not that expensive and wouldn't mind the lower temps.

Up to 4Ghz now on around 1.5Vcore. System running very hot now but seems stable enough. Think I can get 4.2 but would need better cooling first. Sticking it on 3.6 now for the time being where idle is around mid 30's.

I run mine at 3.6ghz anything over and cool & quite is disabled. @4ghz i get 41.c.... Never tried going any higher as main use for the pc is gaming and i see no difference from 3.6-4.0ghz in game...

Moogleys, what board have you got mate? looks similar to mine. I have my 955 BE C2 running at 3.7ghz 1.41 vcore really happy with it. Idles around 30c even in this hot weather. I have a really cool room as well so in the winter its freezing so i reckon i could push it further but dont like pumping in the voltage lol

MSI 785GM-E51 785G...

Is it normal on the 955 BE that anything over 3.6ghz disables the cool & quite.? I can run lovely and stable at 4ghz with low temps but cool & quite does not function no matter what i set in the bios. If i set the chip to run at 3.6ghz it works perfect..at 3.8 no cool and quite ??

Anyone clued up on this

Cheers

as far as i know as soon as you change the multiplier cool and quiet disengages, that is what happened with my 550 BE anyway.

if you overclock by the fsb instead of the multiplier is will probably stay working i think.

Didn't have that issue when I last overclocked this setup. Ran it clocked to 3.8ghz with CnQ on for ages, 965 C2 though, but shouldn't make a difference really?

Just tried overclocking again, started simple, just trying to get my 1600mhz RAM to run at 1600mhz. Just upped the RAM multiplier to the correct setting and the voltage to 1.65v, crashed in the Crysis benchmark and now Crysis won't load. :(

Cheers i,m now running 16x250 at 4ghz and cool and quite worls lovely...

had to give it 1.5v to get it stable max temp is 46.c so well within limits.

My cpu is a RB-C3 whatever that means...?

Ran fine on my old board for 6 months? I just set the multiplier up a notch and then set the voltage to 1.65v.

Think I've heard this before though.

I've decided to just not bother with it now though, my chip will do 3.8ghz when it's on the limit, using 1.55v and using some ridiculous wattage. That equates to a 12% increase in clock speed, so probably less in overall performance.

I'll give my motherboard an easy life until the 8 cores come along. My plan for the moment is to wait for a 125/95 watt 8 core, get one of those, add another 4gb of RAM and that should be me set for a good while yet.

Well, AM3's got no upgrade path CPU wise, you'll need a new motherboard to get an 8 core.

Here's my current overclock.

I read somewhere that the 8 cores would be on AM3?

If not, I'll just get a 1090T or a 95w 1055t and have a play with that. I'm liking the results you're getting from yours. :P

Didn't you get it to over 4.3ghz the other day though? was that just a benchmark run?

Would you mind seeing what sort of time it completes SuperPi 1m in? Mine takes 20.4secs stock on this board, it was over 21 stock on the old 790X board. I'd just be interested to see the difference, although I doubt I'll see much everyday difference at all, my 965 spends most of it's life running at 0.8/2.2ghz thanks to CnQ. The limiting factors to everyday speed in this build are the HDDs and graphics card IMO.

Here's an old screenie of mine, that board had terrible vdroop though, anything over 1.5v and it started spiking eratically. I did get a run at 4.040ghz but failed to get it to 4.1ghz. This is on a C2 so it was far from stable. :P
