AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

Seraph, I haven't overclocked it, just unlocked it to a quad. Or do you mean I should take it back to a dual core for the time being? Wasn't planning on overclocking in it with the stock cooler!

I can't see that cooler on ocuk sirig111. Anyone else got some specific temp numbers for an unlocked quad before and after installing an aftermarket cooler?

borgia.

Screenie?

And you don't happen to know the batch number of your chip? :D

as for batch number i had it noted somewhere but can't find it.

i can't find the one i had of running prime 95 but i do have one the results it left in a txt file:

@borgia yeah the cooler is great but i found the installation a little fiddly. but for £27 you can't go wrong, you can add another fan to it aswell, something i might do.

Nice one, if you ever find the batch no hit me up in trust :)

My B50 will boot @ 1.5v but I've tried up to 1.575 to get to stabel with no dice :(
Got some 4Ghz benches though :)

Running @ 3.8Ghz 24/7 now @ 1.45v

I forgot I hadnt added my efforts with my new chip in this thread.

Unfortunately I haven't done it with stock cooler. I have seen this cooler for 15 inc vat, but not with delivery and not here. So You can still go for Noctua, which is pretty much the same, but lot more expensive.

Ran about an hour of IBT, the rig is running Folding@home on both GPU and CPU for 8+ hours a day.

I'm going to carry on tweaking over the next couple of days and see what its really capable of.

I can bench at 4.2 but it may be stable with some more tweaking.

Well picked up the AMD® Phenom™ II X3 yesterday and pulled the system from under the desk to get the processor installed . . . been several months since I last swapped out chips so a wee bit of tomb dust had gathered on the heatsink!

amdphenomiix31.jpg

Lobbed The Mummy out the window and got the evil remains cleaned out with a hoover! :p . . . . chip installed, nice fresh layer of AS5/TIM and plonked the Thermolab Baram back on top and secured before finally getting a trusty Akasa AK-FN053 120mm Smart fan clipped back on . . .

amdphenomiix35.jpg

Now everyone has their own style of OverClocking and mine is a slowly but surely approach . . . I start off with the everything on [Auto] for a quick burn, check temps etc then I begin Voltage-Scaling tests with the processor at stock MHz I manually adjust the vCore downwards until the PC becomes unstable and then nudge the vCore up a few clicks so the processor is stable enough to pass at least eight hours of Prime95 Small FFTs and a quick 20 loops of IBT . . . once the basline vCore is established I start overclocking the processor and nudge up the vCore enough to get it stable . . .

This particular Phenom II X3 720 (2.8GHz) has a [VID] of 1.3250 but managed to run stably with 1.184vCore . . . not to bad . . . with that done I change only the CPU multiplier upwards from x14 to x15 to get a nice round 3.0GHz with [1.2250]vCore set in the BIOS and left that running Prime95 Small FFTs for 8 hours . . . . first result below . . . more to come . . . as I said I'm a slowly but surely kinda guy! :p

Looking good so far BW, I'm guessing you had no luck on an unlock. 19% seems to be about the sweet spot for LLC as well, definatly something I miss with the gigabyte board the vcore used to be rock solid

Never did get back to this thread with my true proof of a 4ghz unlock. Had to nudge the volts up another notch though, so im right on the limit :(

4000cpu.png

Halfway through trying to find the max clocks of every individual clockable component atm. Annoyingly and old bios bug related to the cpu-nb multiplier has reared its ugly head again. I swear foxconn had fixed that a while back...

off topic: Big Wayne, what image hosting site do you use? I seem to have problems viewing some of your images lately (lots of small black lines through them). Dont think its anything on my end cousing it, because it only seems to be with your images specifically (and only some of them at that...)

Here's my 945:

PCstats.png

Stock is 3.0Ghz, managed to up that to 3.6Ghz with a voltage of 1.45, all on stock cooling.

Can't be arsed to run Prime as i've done it a while back and all was well.

One question, how come the Fans tab is showing one line and most of you guys have 3-4? I have an Antec 300 and 5 fans yet i've only got one line of them on CPUID.

I feel inadequate :(

frozennova: Yeah just plodding along . . . these Black-Edition chips with the unlocked CPU multiplier are so easy to clock . . . thought I may as well publish each step so anyone who still doesn't understand much about clocking can get a better idea of the steps involved . . . I picked up a second AMD® 785G AM2+ mobo made by gigabyte (GA-MA785GM-US2H) and have to say the vCore line is rock solid . . . currently using that in another machine with the AMD® Athlon™ II X4 630 . . .

Didn't get round to testing the unlock on this AMD® Phenom™ II X3 yet . . . that can wait till all the testing is completed with it as a straight up TripleCore, get the vCore scaling stuff done first then have a fiddle with the CPU-NB MHz and stuff like that . . . once that's all done will see if it unlocks . . . I actually only need a TripleCore for gaming so not too fussed if it unlocks or not . . . if it does unlock then that means another whole bunch of testing which I'm not keen on doing just atm! :p

I like the look of your C3 stepping AMD® Phenom™ II X4 . . . 4.0GHz at approx 1.400vCore is awesome . . . I'd like to see some serious stability testing done on that? . . . 34°C-50°C looks really good! :)

thingemajib: Good to see another C3 4.0GHz clock! . . . 1.552vCore eh? . . . how are the temps under load at that clock? . . . also what processor is that you unlocked? . . . an X2 or an X3 or? . . .

All my image hosting is done using http://imageshack.us/ . . . not sure whats goings on with you seeing black lines through some images? . . . could it be something I'm doing wrong? . . . a problem with ImageShack or perhaps something at your end? (display issue?) . . .

buchtis: Hey AMD® Phenom™ II X4 @3.6GHz is nothing to sniff at . . . that's plenty fast for you surely? . . . You got a C3 stepping as well you lucky git . . . does it need 1.456vCore to run stably @ 3.6GHz? . . . did you work your way up to that clock or just straight in at 3.6GHz? . . . did you try any higher yet? :D

Not sure whats up with your HWMonitor fan readings? . . . are they all 3 or 4-pin fans connected to the motherboard or? . . . would be good to see some stability testing done in your future submissions . . . makes the screenies more useful if people can see the chip under pressure . . . idle/load temps etc!

Hi Wayne,

Sorry to sound like a total noob but what's 'C3 stepping'?

Worked my way gradually to 3.6 from 3.0. I have a ASRock 980FX motherboard which has pre-configured clocks in steps, so you have default, 3.15Ghz (2XX something - no idea what it means), 3.30Ghz and so on in increment of 0.15Ghz.

I've no idea how you manually change the clocks to specific speeds, i'm a total noob at overclocking. Am running XP x64 Bit and on 3.40Ghz is started giving me a BSO, not sure if that was the CPU or Windows playing up to be honest, I assume it was the CPU as i've gone from 1.34 I think to 1.45 and all seems well. Ran Prime 95 at these speeds for about 5 hours or so when I went to watch a football match, came back and it was still running with no errors reported. Will do another one and try and up mu speed even more :D

On another note, WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH MY FAN SPEEDS?!?!?!

26K RPM?!?!?!
