AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

I have no cooling on the mosfets, doesn't seem to be causing a problem here (2-3 months) . . . I put my fingers on the phases & VRMs and they are running hot but not burning! :D . . . I've been meaning to rig up some ghetto-loving cooling to help but in the meantime it's all good in the hood! :)

Just a quick hello from me, seems everyone is getting along fine and working hard at those overclocks! :D . . . Gareth: Thanks a lot for sharing those test results in post #1096 . . . I will nose over them later! :)

I saw a couple of new names when reading over the last few pages . . . rumble291, modez & SpAceD . . . are you guys here? if so gimme a shout and you can claim your official welcome! :p

Gareth: don't get hacked off as that never helps the trouble-shooting? . . . Has anything changed in your system since you last did those 8 hour prime runs?

mmj_uk: Hello, can I point you towards the welcome post please! :)

nelcon: jeeps that fast! . . . I always stability test before I bench otherwise one becomes "tempted" to post suicide sceenies! :D

Gareth: I think the IMC is perhaps more sensitive to high load temps than the CPU? . . . while 57°C is not dangerous I do think you have exceeded the sweet spot temp wise! :( . . . Deneb always seems to do better while chilly . . . what is your cooling? . . . is it still the Tru-120?

Unlucky eddiew! :( . . . . still if it makes you feel any better I had my PC BSOD after 20 hours of Prime Blend the other day! :D . . . what can you do! . . . brush yourself down, make some adjustments and dive back in to the madness! :p

Who was it in this thread that was having problems with their chip "throttling" down to x4 multi while the CPU was fully loaded? . . .

I've come across the same issue while trying to max some more speed from the CPU-NB? . . . CnQ is disabled, I've manually set the CPU multi but while under extreme stress I've observed the processor multi dropping to x4 along with the vCore dropping approx 0.300v (1.500vCore >>> 1.200vCore) . . . interesting? . . . my first guess is perhaps the chip has exceeded some hardcoded thermal limits and is reducing speed to prevent possible damage? . . . anyone else notice this before (you have to keep a beady eye on CPU-z) . . . cheers in advance for any feedback! :)

Thanks Gareth . . . . doesn't look like that is the problem then (o.t AIIX4 chip btw) . . . not to worry I'll do a bit more trouble-shooting and see if anything turns up! :)

@ Everyone

I've updated the "welcome post" guidelines to include:

No Intel® optimized software results please (Super-PI)

Hello lqfaint and welcome to the thread! :) . . . please read the welcome post and enjoy your stay! :D . . . nice set of results there and looks promising! . . . couple of points to mention, if possible it preferable to include the stability test in the screenie as well as the [Memory] tab from CPU-z and most importantly your name good sir! :D . . . if you manage to fit some star-wars theme in there also I would be extra happy! ;)

How long exactly have you had your new system? . . . would I be right you started overclocking it as soon as you powered it on? . . . 3.7GHz @ 1.392vCore seems good, did you adjust the vCore yourself or is that on [auto]?

Hello drunkenmaster, welcome to the thread! :) . . . . please read the welcome post and as much of the thread as you can! :D . . . looks like you got some great kit there!, gratz on the unlock and would be great if you can post up any stability sceenies as and when you have time! . . . . I've tried to avoid quoting as much as possible so hopefully you will find the thread a lot easier to read . . . lots of good info, screenies and even a few freebies lurking in the previous 10000+ posts!

Hey gareth170, so the system that was stable, that became unstable is now stable again? :D . . . there's only two things that spring to mind . . . . a) I spoke with an electrician yesterday and asked him about your electric problem, he said to find out what DB you are using? (Distribution Board) and a bunch of other stuff that he wrote down but I can't understand his handwriting so will have to get back to you, find out your DB though . . . and b) Is there any chance either the memory sticks or the motherboard is overheating?, a fluctuation in temps could cause an error? . . . I've recently added some cooling for the motherboards PWM/Mosfets which were heatsink-less and it' appears to have sorted a few problems I was having? . . . so how is the cooling to both your motherboard and your ram? :)

Hey Gareth, that looks like solid board! and combined with good case airflow it would seem indeed like everything is nice and cool . . . . although you say the mobo temp is 37°C that does not mean the whole mobo is 37°C, just the area around the sensor

On the ASUS mobo I am using this mobo-temp sensor is located just above the ram slots, I found this out by pointing a hairdryer (on cold blast) at different areas of the board until I saw the Hardware Monitor temp drop . . . with the cold blast of air directed at the sensor the temp dropped to 20°C although as said already this was just the local area and the rest of the board was burning hot in places . . . . combined with the fact that you are *not* using a downwards blowing heatsink fan and are overclocking a quad core I would say there is at least a small chance the PWM/Mosfets "could" be running a bit too hot? . . . I guess it depends what voltages are flowing . . . .

I know this may sound a bit abstract but sometimes to solve overclocking issues you have to keep an open mind and never right a possibility off until you have tested it . . . . It's only today that I added a fan to cool the power circuitry on my heatsinkless board but the difference it has made is very noticable . . . . that Trottling issue I mentioned a few days ago has gone away and I am now able to get the CPU-NB running faster, more stable and using much lower volts than when the PWM/Mosfets were running toasty! . . . and all that's changed is the cooling?

If it's not that then surely the RAM is playing up? . . . we got to get you sorted as this has been dragging on for weeks! :D

Hi Liam, yeah I am using the ASUS M4A785D-M Pro! . . . how can you call it an "ok" board? . . . it's a "Superb" board heh! :p . . . . I'm sticking with DDR2 so I couldn't find anything better and to be honest at £57.95 it's a total steal! :)

I've had one or two "teething" problems but it's all fairly sorted now, dunno if you saw above I mentioned to Gareth that I added a 120mm fan to cool the PWM/Mosfets and that has worked wonders! :D

So why do you call it an "ok" board? . . . what problem did you have with it?

Liam: Yes a lot of more expensive ££ boards include a PWM/Mosfet heatsink although depending on the level of overclock/voltage being used even these "heatsinked" boards sometimes need additional cooling . . . I'm amazed I got this far without cooling mine! :o

So how long have you owned that board? I got mine Nov last year and I'm just now sussing it out after 4-5months! ;) . . . I think the BIOS is awesome, never seen so many useful BIOS options in a board of this price . . . . All the BIOS options make sense to me? . . . here is my BIOS settings from a few days ago, could it be anymore simple! :p

Hello james.miller and welcome to the thread! :) . . . please read the "Welcome Post" and preferably the whole thread! ;) . . . looks like you got some uBer kit there . . . couldn't be any easier for you man . . . just play with the CPU Multi and the vCore! . . . your appointed Deneb 965 guide is gareth170, hes the man!
