AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

liamcrane, if your really fresh to this platform then take it nice and slow, do simple experiments like changing one thing at a time and then looking at CPU-z to see what's changed . . . you got:

  • CPU Multi
  • CPU-NB Multi
  • HT Link Multi
  • HT ref. Clock
You need to first work out the basic link between all of the above before you change things! :)

Hey PapaLazaru, welcome to the thread! :) . . . please make sure to read the welcome post and preferably the whole thread before proceeding . . . looks like your off to a good start there, temps fine! :D

"Don't quote me on that!"

PapaLazaru: See what the lads say, I'm not sure what is a generally agreed "high" temps as of yet? . . . I'm also not sure if anyone else is using the stock cooler? . . . should be fine for the moment! :)

If anyone feels the need, then I suppose it would be a good idea to write a "mini-guide" to AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking from your own personal point of view . . . I could then link it to the new guys as and when they join. doesn't have to be a monster and could be as simple & specific such as getting the best from the CPU-NB clocks or how you found the temps scaled with your clocks etc . . . if everyone does a little bit the end result could be special! :)

I know most of the thread members have nearly "mastered" their clocks now but your knowledge is still mostly in your head and scattered across dozens of posts, little guides are always appreciated by people when they are new, clears the fog away and speeds them on their way!

I didn't get any OCCT results apart from Gareths! :D

Now I need yet another favour, can someone with a BE chip make me a screen grab using two copies of CPU-z like this please, main [CPU] tab and [Mem] tab side by side on a clean white background (open Notepad behind CPU-z) . . . . you can mail the image direct to my email here . . . I'm gonna have a stab at a better starter guide but need the image to explain things . . . thanks in advance, I will [edit] the unhappy faces below to a smile when I get the images I need!

Task Status:

OCCT Ripple results= :(
CPU-z [CPU] tab and [Mem] screenie = :)

Thanks gurusan, oh I forget about Windows 7! :o . . . . what I need is like the image above but with Windows shadows tuned off *and* a gap between the two windows (on a white background) left hand tab being the active window! :D

a virtual clone of this . . . email me .bmp direct to save hassle!

Hey Martini1991,

nice clock, any Prime Blend? . . . . I wonder, you could do some testing changing the cores from x2/x3/x4 and do some benching? :)

As the chip has level three cache don't post it in the AII thread . . . CPU-z didn't get the name right . .

  • Callisto
  • Heka
  • Deneb

No worries Elfmeister! :) . . . there is absolutely no obligation on you or anyone else to keep posting! . . . I think it's a case of get some good clocks going and then get back to normal life (gaming etc)

gareth170 & Martini1991 what's the highest speed you have both achieved that is 8 hours prime blend stable? . . . . I think Martin may have the highest clock so far but I've not seen any stability shots apart from IBT/LinX? . . . I think though that Gareth has submitted the highest Prime blend . . .

Gurusan: Is there any chance you can get 4GHz? . . . Do you feel you have "attuned" yourself to AM3 clocking? . . . I say this because l also came from a three year run on LGA775 and it's a bit difficult to adjust, at least it was to me as the hardware "handles" differently! :)

If your not enjoying the lack of a "Happy" 4GHz stable machine then you may have to pilfer a AMD® Phenom™ II X4 965 BE from somewhere or sell up and get yourself an i5-750! :D

Gareth: cool mate no worries, drop one off sometime in the future and hope you feel better soon! :)

gurusan: Interesting? . . . isn't the i3 slower that what you got? (3.8GHz and 4 cores) or are you planning some 5GHz clocking expedition! :p . . . did you see the AIIX4630@3500MHz vs i3-530@4000MHz fritz? . . . no worries either way man and it was an honour to have you contribute to the thread, your an OcUk legend!

Outrageous! :) . . . AMD® Phenom™ II X6 BE :D

Will they need their own dedicated thread or will they be part of this thread?

Changing subject quickly I have a question although it's not urgent so drop an answer off sometime when you post next . . . . I want to know a bit more about TDP and the way a motherboard has a TDP rating?

This is the mobo I am using (AM2+/DDR2)

Support CPU up to 125W

Now my question is this . . . I'm using a 95w TDP chip that is overclocked in the above mobo, how do I work out the TDP of the chip once its overclocked & overvolted? . . . . I'm thinking at some point I will hit some kind of "TDP Wall"

Oh dear now I'm confused? . . . so does that mean the motherboards TDP rating improves if you put better heatsinks on it and improve your cooling? :D

Which AMD board has a "humongous" TDP rating?

Hi eddiew, that question has been discussed quite a bit already in this thread and is probably a subject we shouldn't revisit too much! :p . . . how much of this thread have you read btw? :) (please read the "welcome" post here). . . everyone has their own standards of stability, even though I use all the diagnostics I haven't used the Prime Small FFTs test as Blend seems to hammer the chip pretty good (inc the IMC) . . . Your right in as much that the actual day-to-day running of your machine will most likely not be so "stressful" but it's generally good practice to "simulate" the worst case scenarios if your a Mad Scientist! :D

It's not just about the heat, it's also about the ability of the machine to perform "precise" mathamatical function while under immense pressure!

Good luck Martini1991! :) . . . obviously we won't be needing five screenshots of the same Blend session! I'd say at this point in the thread a minimum blend should be 4 hours although I'd rather people waited the full 8 hours! . . . P.S: don't forget to include your name in the screenies please!

Martini1991, considering how long you owned that chip I'm suprised to not see a mega prime blend result from you yet . . . . seen the IBT's and other good stuff but no blend! ;)

We all know why :p

Hey gareth170 what you up to? . . . . you left your system "static" for a bit and chilled out? (don't blame you!) . . . feeling a bit better now? :)
