AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

to be honest its not the best cooler and keep the volts under 1.5v to be safe.

i would go with a titan fenrir , true , baram , these are big coolers so make sure they will fit if you go this route .

the stock cooler is about as good as the ac one and would do 3.6 on that.
 
Firstly - back off the clock for now. AMD recommends a maximum of 62°C for 45nm CPUs with L3 cache. The Freezer 7 is really a midrange cooler with performance not actually that much better than the stock Phenom cooler. It is a heck of a lot quieter at full speed though.

I'm using a very similar cooler to you (Freezer 64) and I had to work hard to improve case air flow in order to get the temps down. I removed the plastic bezels on the 5.25" bays and replaced them with a grille and intake fan. That dropped my lload temps by a good 10°C. Even so I very much doubt I could safely get over 3.4GHz with the cooler (even if my motherboard and RAM would let me)

Really though, if you want to aim for higher speeds you'll need better cooling. Thermolab Baram or Titan Fenrir spring to mind.

Edit: in the short term you could try running with an open case.

I am not so sure. I lot of them seem to hit a wall at 3.9 even if they get up to 3.8 really easily with mostly stock settings.

Damien is it stable on 19.5 multi? Have you tried increasing the clock speed?

Most 965 II's are 1.4V, I got lucky and have an II at 1.375V, I can reach 4GHZ which passed 20 passes IBT maximum stable at 63C.
He's 3.8GHZ at 1.325V, AKA his stock voltage.. Although his cooling doesn't seem great.. With my new WC loop that's arriving, I could easily take his II to possibly 4.2GHZ.
I'd love to buy his chip lol.

I'll be interested to see what he can do. I would love to get my chip to 4 but although it will boot into 4.1ish I have never managed to get it stable above 3.83 or so.
 
He'll be temp limited.
A few minutes of prime at 52C? II's get wobbly at the best of times at around 62C, and if he's only running 1.325V and 3.8GHZ and reaching 52C.. Meh..
1.5V, 4GHZ, I'm 63c maxed lol, that was on my T.R.U.E, the WC loop should be around 50C, with his chip, I'd defo get 4.2GHZ stable lol, I'd love to buy it and try.
 
Just have to keep fiddling :)

I would be chuffed with 3.9 but I think I am at the stage where memory timings and nb frequency will make more difference to my performance than an extra .2 ghz or so.
 
This thread interests me a lot. Got a Phenom II X2 545 that will unlock to quad core and all cores stable :)

Going to buy a new cooler and have a play around with it, but dont know what cooler would be best that will fit in an antec 300?
 
Depends what your budget is. I am really pleased with my coolermaster hyper tx3. It was very cheap but punches above its weight performance wise.

That said it does not perform well enough for really serious overclocking (I think it may be what is holding me back at 3.8ghz).

A lot of people seem to think the Baram is really good. Although I have no experience of it myself.

Congrats on getting all 4 cores unlocked. I am jealous ;)
 
My budget isnt that big, (im a jobless student XD), and i dont plan on serious overclocking, just seeing what extra i can get out of it to help improve 3D render times (as thats what my course involves).

edit: baram looks good, would have to check it fits in a 300 though
 
Just upped the multiplier to 19 and thats it. My memory is still running at 1300.
There are a lot more settings with my new setup than on my old 3800 Venice :confused::eek:
