I see it as more of a friendly debate, I certainly don't hold any grudge towards Gareth lol.

EDIT : I'll go some coursework and start the Prime 95 at 12, I will post whether it's unstable or stable, though my doubts of unstability are greater.
If it's unstable, except my pleads of stability advice lol.

Good to hear, just be aware that Gareth sometimes has physical discomfort and periods of feeling unwell which can get someone down or make them feel ratty . . . so lets just make sure we can do what we can to make his overclocking experience as pleasant as possible! . . . and Gareth if I have upset you myself in the past or been harsh with you then please accept my humble apologies, I'm sometimes a hard task-master but my heart is in the right place! :cool:
 
I think I may have a reason for my GSOD..
I use MSI to control the 2d and 3d clocks on my 5850..
I minimised mass effect. Let's assume that the voltage lowered, this would make the 1GHZ on my GPU core unstable, thus, resulting in a GSOD, the same way a CPU would BSOD if the voltage lowers a large amount.

Mass effect, once minimized wouldn't allow me to maximise again, that's never happened before..

Like I say, I'll deem it unstable/stable at 8am once the Prime Blend's completed/failed.

I'm beggining to get frustrated with my setup! 3.8 running sweet as pie earlier this week until I tried to tweak the CPU-NB - after which I can't seem to run anything other than stock settings fully stable - I shuda just stuck with it but HAD to listen to recommendations to get the CPU-NB up :( :( :(

Any ideas guys? - This platform is ALLOT harder to OC than anything I've dealt with before, and I don't have anywhere else to turn....

Please can someone post voltages and complete settings for their overclocks (ideally AM3) so we have a rough guideline - please.
 
Keep the two "suspects" separate during questioning Martin! . . . Stability testing can normally be fitted into a slot where it doesn't cause you any interference or disruption . . . . I've been blending for nearly a week and a half solid, still can surf, email, photoshop etc but no gaming . . I ran a 500 loop LinX yesterday and although it passed fine I was unable to use the PC as it was McClunkus . . .

I normally have the overclocked machine to my right just sitting there testing, burning in etc and use another machine as my main workstation but not long ago I decided to swap this idea around and use the "in-progress" overclocked machine as my main workstation and keep the second clocked/stable machine to my right for surfing and stuff while I bench the main system.

I found that for stability testing and flushing out little boogeys then using the machine for about a week with a combination or "diagnostics" and plenty of real-world apps (folding, p-shop etc) gives me great confidence the clocks are good and robust . . . each to their own! :cool:
 
Gareth's claims of GSOD happening on unstable CPU core's are correct, as in, that's what happens...

However, my GSOD can't be CPU related, I played ME2 for 10 hours straight at 4GHZ with no GSOD. (This was back on air).
I was on the 9.12 drivers back then, I'm now on 10.3 preview.

I still suspect my GSOD to be related by the Vcore droppage in the GPU.

I'll finish this coursework, then play some ME1 for a few hours, then at 12, start the Prime.

The GSOD "suspect" will be "questioned" in ME1
 
Big.Wayne. Martini1991 & me are fine mate. it's not u that should be sorry, it's me. sometimes i get moody because i'm in pain all the time, and sometimes i can't hide it...
 
Martini1991, this is explain i got GSOD when watching tv or running prime95. never in gaming. but after i got the system stable, the GSOD went..
 
not all of it mate :) - I made it to about page 13 from the start and joined you guys at page 25-ish. I've been to the linked threads about oc-ing the 965 and also got the Unleash the Dragon doc from here - which I have fully digested (but none the wiser to be honest!)

Problem is people are using all sorts of benching programs - there's benches on here that show 3.9Ghz but when you look at the same persons sig they're only actually running 3.7 now! If it aint prime95 blend stable - it ain't worth having :p

Plus no-one is posting they're actual voltages and settings from BIOS - CPU-Z only gives a tad bit of info compared to what we overclockers have to deal with in BIOS.....
 
I used to watch a lot of TV etc on my PC, never GSOD.
I think it's down to the voltage shift, as it happened when I minimized and tried to maximise mass effect..
But I'll see tonight, if it fails, I'll probably need your help, as you've had to get your system stable Prime 95 blend 8 hour, and thus will have more knowledge + experience in that area.
 
Hey zoomee: crikey you are a bit "frustrated" ain't ya! :D . . . hehe anyway let me say this . . . pretty much all the info you need is in the screenshots and peppered amoungst the many posts, as long as the image includes two copies of CPU-z, an app to display temps and "any" kind of stability test your sorted!

It doesn't matter what CPU voltage is set is BIOS but rather what the chip actually gets, you can "spy" this from the CPU-z screens as well as the OCCT screens (that's no ones posted except Gareth & I lol!) . . . . You can see the Ht Ref.Clock in CPU-z, you can see the CPU-NB and HT multiplier in CPU-z as well as basic memory speed and timings! :cool:

I should have been clearer - what I mean is volts for things like HTT, CPU-NB, northbridge, Load Line calibration settings etc etc etc - not just vcore for cpu, and the usual 'generic' settings.

I'm giving it one more go before I give up and just set this thing up for silence @ stock in anticipation of thuban. Think my lack of patience is getting worse as I get older. lol.

Can I just ask - is it normal for a PII system to completely reboot - no errors just reboot when oc-ing it? I'm beginning to suspect my PSU.... I don't get crashes in prime95 or BSOD's - always seem to get straight off reboots! (yes I've disabled reboot after error in windows b4 u ask!)

zoomee: I would like to think that everyone who has contributed so far has left a Technical-Trail that makes it easier for others to follow, everyone is sharing as much info as they can so I think your gonna need to be a bit more patient and work things out at a pace where you don't become frustrated? . . . I hope I said that in the right way! :D

I've been using this platform since nov 2009 and I still consider myself an AM2+/AM3 nOOb! ;) . . . . The only voltages I've had to take off [Auto] is vCore, that's up to 2500MHz-HT Link and 2500MHz CPU-NB, above those speeds I need to play with either the HT link volts or the CPU-NB volts (depending which is running faster, they are both independant), TBH I've not seen huge gains running the HT link much above 2GHz but I've seen good gains from running the CPU-NB MHz as fast as possible, the CPU-NB on two chips I've tested all run "flawlessly" up to 2.5GHz using [Auto] CPU-NB.

Just take your time and I'm sure you will get the hang of it soon enough . . . and yes I have had some "sudden" reboots as you described them, 9 out of ten times this is fixed with a little extra vCore . . . although if your clocking the CPU-NB hard it could be that? . . .it could also be a thermal thing? . . . lots of possibilities dude and please forgive us if we can't get you fixed up as quickly as you would like! :cool:
 
nice diplomatic answer mate :) :) :) ever considered running as prime minister? - I'm sure we'd get more resolved in the middle east peace process with an attitude like yours - frustrated numpties like me need folk like you to 'calm us down' :D

thanks man - its good to know that you can achieve them stats with Auto volts. I'll try again later when my head stops spinning from looking at all those voltages in my spare time :P

just FYI - i ain't clocking CPU-NB and temps are defo within good reach (max temps so far @ 3.8 are 50Degrees C)

And no - no need to forgive you guys!- forgive me first for being an impatient git.
 
i am running prime95 at *.**ghz :D at the moment if it doesn't fail from now till 12am i will post what speed and the screen shot

Looks like my PC heard my threats and behaved itself last night!

Its only set to DDR3-1333 - so it turns out my issues were RAM related. Will try upping voltages on RAM and go for DDR3-1600 somepoint tonight.
