AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

Right, so I as already mentioned I bought a Gelid Tranquillo Cooler last week and here are the before and after results as both a X2 550 and a X4 B50.

Sorry in advance for the photo sizes and layout of the post. First time doing this!

The Gelid is a huge improvement over the stock cooler as you can see in the last screenshots. For £25~ I think the Gelid is great bang for buck, and as my first venture into aftermarket cooling I'm very impressed with it. The results aren't completley reliable or as accurate as I'd like which is a shame. My room temperature fluctuates quite a lot, if you look at the GPU temps you will notice this, as they should really not have changed much in an ideal setting. Also not being able to read the seperate core temps is a shame but I will just have to be abit more careful monitoring the temps.

I've got some overclocking results which I will post up shortly aswell :)

Kinda "overwhelmed" by screenies there! :D

Just a quick suggestion . . . obviously HardwareMonitor tracks "both" idle & Load temps so there is no need to publish separate images to reflect this! ;)

So is the TMPIN1 sensor showing your CPU temps then? . . . sorry I'm a bit confused in the myriad of screenies knowings whats what? . . . I'm seeing 65°C load temps with the X4 at 3.1GHz which seems quite high?

Any chance you could redo (cut down) the images in your last post please? . . . also don't forget to include your name somewhere in the screenies if at all possible . . . many thanks! :cool:
 
I'll get rid of the Idle screenshots. Yeah, pretty sure the TMPIN1 is the CPU temp. The 65°C load temps your seeing are with the stock AMD cooler. Compared to the 39°C load temps below it using the Gelid Tranquillo. Considerable improvement if you ask me! Yeah, I'll try and get this done aswell. Just looking though, I don't think you will be able to see the text if I make them smaller?

I'm not sure how much of this thread you have read but can I direct you towards the "welcome" post please! ;)

If you check that over you will read I have been trying to avoid any undeed "quotations" :D . . . this no quotes policy is different to most other threads but its its done for a good reason which is to help make this "long" thread easier to read and eliminate as much redundant text as possible . . . with this is mind may I politely ask you to (yet again) redo your last post and remove the quotes . . . thanks in advance for your co-operation and look forward to your futher results! :cool:
 
Think I should point out, obviously when quotes are needed they should be used, but if your post with the quotes is right under the post you're replying to, then they're pointless. Also without the poster info and the snapback link they're also completely useless. :p

Could do with some advice fellas. I have a Gigabyte UD3H with a 965BE C2, and I can't get CnQ to work. I can set it to auto or off, so I'm guessing it needs to be auto, and the CPU is all stock so the multiplier hasn't been upped past the point where CnQ stops working.

Any ideas? Cheers. :)

Muel, ha, its just a habit from posting in other forums where its fine to do it. I'll have to disagree in that I find it much easier to understand whats going in a thread when quotes are used. Even if you are replying to the person above you. But there we go :p

I'm not sure if I agree with your conclusion . . . its quite easy to know I am talking to you as I am using your name and you know what I'm talking about . . . if I was referring to one of your earlier posts it would be very easy for me to reference the post without needing to quote you for a snapback link :D

So what's this problem with your Gigabyte UD3H with a 965BE C2 with CnQ not working? :confused:

The only time I've had a problem with CnQ was either when I didn't have the drivers installed *or* I didn't have some Windows power saving option set correctly? . . . I didn't enounter this problem where CnQ stops working if the CPU multi is hiked too far?

40% reduction in load temps! . . . very nice! :cool:
 
Wayne: I see your point with the quotes. I still think that for someone just reading my post it's be easier if the quote was there, because no doubt this post (so far) makes no sense without it, however the link is there. :)

I've heard of Gigabyte boards turning off CnQ when you turn the multi up past a certain level, I think it was 18.5 but not certain. I have run CnQ with 3.8ghz (200x19) on my old Asus board without problems though.

Seraph - Cheers for the pointer but I found the problem anyway, I'd set the power management profile to high performance, which locks the CPU working at 100%, so it was constantly drawing 131w+ according to HWMonitor. Now it's back to idleing at 20.50w. Mighty useful when you're paying the electricity bill! Might overclock it again now actually, see if I can get 3.9/4.0ghz stable with CnQ working....
 
Hi Muel,

Can you turn CnQ on thorough AMD Overdrive. Im on an Asus M4A785TD-V EVO and even with CnQ enabled in the bios is wasnt actually active.

Fire up Overdrive and look for a green cirlce with a red border. This should turn green if you click on it and it will enable CnQ properly.
 
I don't have overdrive installed, but I have got it working now anyway, just needed to switch it to Auto in the BIOS and then set the minimum CPU state back down to 5%. :)
 
So you fixed it Muel? :) . . . was this all in BIOS or some settings in Windows too? . . . Also did you ever get your memory sorted and running at full speed btw?
 
Yeh Wayne CnQ is working perfectly now, the only problem was that I had set my system's power scheme to High Performance, and that set the minimum processor state to 100%. I set it back to 5% and now CnQ ramps it down to 0.8ghz, using 20.50w. Perfect. It was all down to windows, not the BIOS.

I never got my RAM up to 1600mhz no. According to some of the more experienced PhenomII overclockers on here, this is often the case because the memory controller in PhenomII chips runs at 1333mhz, anything over that can be a push at times. The RAM is perfectly stable at 1600mhz, it's the memory controller that's the issue. Martini1991 was running his 95w 1055t at 4.2ghz stable, but could had to run the ram at 1333mhz I believe.

Running at 1600mhz over 1333mhz yields very little gain too apparantly, better to run at 1333mhz and lower the strain on the memory controller. My understanding is that this allows you to overclock the CPU itself slightly further, but don't quote me on that. :)

Having read what the "more experienced PhenomII overclockers" told you about DDR3 I'm not sure I agree? . . . the memory controller doesn't run at 1333MHz? :confused: . . . I think what you mean is that "officially" the chip support DDR3 memory up to 1333MHz but the multipliers are present for 1600MHz operation . . . I built an AMD® Phenom™ II X4 rig for a friend back in April that used DDR3-1600 and it worked fine? :)

I was looking at a review which did some testing with different speed DDR3 along with a stock and overclocked AMD® Phenom™ II X6 . . . while the chip was at stock there was really not much difference between the different memory configs but once the chip was overclocked as well as the CPU-NB there were gains to be had? . . . I'm not sure if the gains were good enough to pay a large premium for but if I was personally buying DDR3 memory I would consider it a long term investment and certainly buy DDR3-1600 over DDR3-1333 for an extra £5.00 . . . If I already owned DDR3-1600 I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be running it at DDR3-1333 unless I could get some mega low timings?

I think I misunderstood slightly then misinterpreted what I had read, then wrote it badly. The stock speed of the memory controller is 1333mhz, and anything over that is an overclock. On my old motherboard I ran 1600mhz from day 1 with no issues, then I got my new board, transferred everything across and it's not stable enough to even boot at 1600mhz. (Or wasn't a few months back).

From those graphs the gains seem fairly small going for 1600 over 1333m average 5% increase it seems to show? Hardly seems worth the effort to me. (Which was the real reason I gave up trying to get my C2 965 to 4.0ghz. I didn't see any real world difference going from 3.4ghz to 3.8ghz and it needed a huge voltage hike). :p
