AMD R9 290 (Non-X, Pro, etc) Owners Club

Does needing +75mv for a stable 1140/1500 on a Tri-X R9 290 OC sound way too high or is it okay?

With the whole golden ratio thing it's a pain in the ass trying to find the best overclock.

sounds ok - sounds better than mine

I need 75mv or so for 1140 - but I wouldn't hit 1500 at same time at those volts

I run 1100/1400 @ +0.31mV for day to day - find it plenty at good tmeps

btw - perhaps you are trying too hard with memory clock - I'm not sure you're gaining much going to 1500 ?

I find best stability test for mine is 3dmark - the firestrike set of tests

mine will artefact pretty badly (flashes etc) if overclocked too highly

Got round to installing my backplates this evening. Still got a bit of work to do with spray paint and other bits and pieces, but the backplates make a marked improvement.

The LEDs are hooked up to a Grid+ and only come on when the GPUs heat up, so when I'm browsing the web, or doing other desktop tasks, the cards look like this:

Fire up a game, though, and they come to life and look like this:

Hi Nexus,

This is probably not going to be much help to you and i apologise for that. However i think your issue could be down to your motherboard. I think the 290 series of cards with XDMA via PCI-E have problems with motherboards than use the NF200 chip. Unless I'm mistaken i believe X58 uses that chip? I know when i had a P8P67 Deluxe that had the same chip i had BSOD issues with that NF200 chip and my 290 cards.

Have you, or would you be able to try your graphics card in another pc?

AMDMatt (or anyone else for that matter :D),

I was just about to press the button to order a 290 when I spotted this, which worries me as I'm running an EX58-UD5 with Xeon 5650. Despite much Googling I have not been able to find out whether the EX58-UD5 uses the NF200 but it's obviously an X58 chipset.

Do you have any info on whether this issue is likely to cause me problems on the EX58-UD5?

Also, is there any right or wrong answer re: the 'best' brand for a basic 290? I was sort of set to go with Gigabyte ( http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-133-GI&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752) on the basis that it is the same manufacturer as the motherboard, and also has a 3-year warranty. Any reason(s) to consider an alternative?

To the best of my knowledge, this issue only occurs if the NF200 chip is present. If the board does not have that old pci-e switching chip, you should be fine.

Disable Anti Surge protection in the bios.

ULPS will have nothing to do with that Doogles.

That sounds like either an unstable gpu or a faulty gpu. Is the card overclocked?

Overclocked, also does it when monitor is sleeping, black screens lots during monitor sleep, forcing constant voltage atm to see if it fixes it. It was second hand last april and I removed the stock cooler so I am not returning it for something this small even if I can't fix it myself :(

Sounds like you need more core voltage then, or it's not quite stable at the overclock you have set.

You can try disabling monitor sleep as well to see if it helps the issue.

Thanks, however finding out whether the EX58-UD5 has a NF200 appears to be an impossible task. :(

Does the issue affect only 290 cards, or also 280-series? (290 may well be overkill for me anyway, as I'm only going to be running at 1080p and am not a 'serious' gamer who is desparate to run the latest games at ultra-settings)

It will only affect GCN 1.1 cards so R7 260/X and R9 290/290X/295x2.

Thanks.

After a bit more searching I'm >95% sure that the EX58-UD5 does not have the NF200, as it is specified as PCIe x16x16x8 (and the NF200 was used in some motherboards at the time to give them 'true x16x16x16' SLI). So, I may take a punt on a 290 anyway :D

Back to the second part of my question. If I go for the Gigabyte ( http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-133-GI&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752 ) will I be missing a trick vs. some other similarly-priced brand/model?

(Or as an AMD Rep are you precluded from commenting/recommending particular brands? - in which case I'd welcome comments from anyone else ;) )

I can recommend different brands as i see fit. :)

The one you picked looks solid, but i might go for this one if i was you. One of the best overall coolers on the 290 series.

However if you want that three year warranty then by all means go for the one you picked. :)

Recently bought a PCS 290 brand new. When I first boot my PC I get what looks like a glitch in the top-left of screen for a few seconds. It is fine once it gets past POST and into Windows. Something to be concerned about?

Maj can you see if you can get a pic of it; I got PCS+ 290 and not getting that....shouldn't be a problem if it boots fine and plays everything fine.

AMDMatt; we'll have to set up for some matches in BF4; and Plants; I will say my case looks funny way I have it set up until I can get a new case; psu and few other things......

That's what I get for not properly measuring and missing 3mm LOL

Always up for some Plants Vs Zombies action. I've been trying to get -VK- to play it for ages!
