AMD Radeon R-200 graphics cards naming unveiled

That's a very good guess and does make sense. I'm hoping their a little lower then that though? I might buy one if they're priced sensibly? Still a guessing game at this point still?
I too hope the prices would be lower, but for now I'd just try to keep a realistic guess.

I'd rather over-estimate the prices of the Hawaiis and be happy if they do come in at lower price points, than to under-estimate their price point and be disppointed if they turn out more expensive :p

Reading that makes my head hurt.

It makes even less sense if they are just re-badging some of the older cards. They already did this with the 8 series OEM. Just how many years are they going to be flogging us the same old?

I think your pricing is slightly optimistic if anything. £420-450 for the flagship would only happen if the 290X is slower than a 780. If it's on par I would expect it to be in the £450-470 range and if outperforming it £500 and above.

If it's true that this card will compete against the Titan, it will be damn expensive. I think they'll undercut Titan though to force Nvidia to drop their prices, possibly price it £550 and undercut some 780s too. Interested to see how GCN 2.0 is!

hum?
680=770 same but seems new explain how that is "clear" naming from Nvidia?
confuse the hell out of me.

Re-naming is common and people who buys asks the seller who then sells the best deal for them normally. Business as usual.

How is it possible to even turn a thread like this to something that is NVIDIA vs AMD?

The naming system sucks. There is no defence for it. Does not matter who invented it and what is out there in the market already. Even if you love AMD.

Right'o?

They didn't do it with the HD7990 (It could have been £500 at launch but instead they priced it to match the GTX690), so I have doubts they will do it with the new series (but would love to be proven wrong).

It shouldn't be possible as they are just as bad as each other with naming, both had working systems that the over complicated and messed up, Nvidia started well with the GF line, the GF3 Ti 300/500 was properly the best implementation of numbering but then it started to go a-rye with the GF4 (why did the Ti need to be 4xxx and the MX 4xx? they already had different subnames) and then went to total chaos with the FX. ATi on the other had went full retard pretty much off the bat, released the Radeon and then instead of a Radeon 2 series they released an 8000 series and re-branded the 1st Radeon gen to be the 7000 series.

Some GPU companies just want to watch the world burn ^^

And what happened? No sales. That AMD processor that came in at a ridiculously high price because it was flagship - no sales, they had to massively cut the price.

They know not to be so daft next time. I hope anyway, no way they'll make the mistake 3 times in a row. If they do, someone wants firing.

This. I think the 7970 re-brand will be at *least* £220, and more likely £220 to £240.

The recent 7970 clearance prices are just that - clearance prices to shift old stock.

The 7950 rebrand I'd put at ~£200. No way in hell it's going to be £150. Not a chance!

So looks like R9290 is the card of choice for crossfire.
They still 9000 series just not named HD but if they named it R9950 I think that looks strange lol

It's not that bad. I quite like the X denoting the full fat core. But no more, adding additional letters will make it a character cluster****.

The main problem is that there are so many models for a new naming scheme. But they wont all be out at once so that will ease acclimatisation.

Looking at the 7950, how the mighty have fallen!

Yes actually thats not too bad at all, will just take a bit of getting used to i suppose.

When the new cards are announced and start selling are prices of 7950s expected to drop? Becuase i know they have already dropped but im wondering if it will continue to drop..

Videocardz have updated the naming scheme based on info leaked on HIS's website:

So far we know only about Radeon R9 and R7 segments, most likely to be released together. The R9 segment will kick off with R9 280X graphics card, which will replace the HD 7970 GHz Edition. This is probably the most anticipated model featuring Hawaii XT GPU. We do not know how many Stream Processors it will have, but don’t be surprised if the number is somewhere between 2304 and 2560. It is now officially confirmed that the successor to HD 7970 will have 3GB GDDR5 memory, most likely across 384-bit interface. The iPower IceQ X2 from HIS will be equipped with a Dual-DVI connector along with HDMI and two mini-DisplayPorts. Of course it will support Power Tune Boost technology as well. It looks like a direct copy of HIS 7970 IceQ X² 3GB GDDR5 PCI-E DVI/HDMI/2xMini DP (iPower). It is unknown whether guys from HIS made any changes to the cooling solution.

R9 290 series are successor to HD x990 (dual-gpu)
R9 280 series are successor to HD x900 (single-gpu)
R9 270 series are successor to HD x800
R9 260 series are successor to HD x700 series.
