*** AMD Radeon R9 290X Reviews Thread ***

Looks like AMD just pulled another HD 4870!

Thank **** somebody else remembered. I thought I was the only one. This same scenario happened during the HD4000 series release. Nvidias cards prices became seriously gouged due to lack of AMD competition. HD4000 series releases and kicks the crap out of everything Nvidia has on the table for a lot less money, and poof, you see Nvidia's card prices tank by a 100's of pounds over night. Seriously, there were Nvidia cards that dropped by as much as 200 pounds over night. I love it when AMD does this... You gotta love price wars, because it's us consumers that always reap the rewards.

So a touch slower on average at 1440 and 1080 than a stock 780 but faster at 4K. Considering the headroom on even stock 780s that's a bit of a disappointment.

Edit: scrap that looks like I needed to check more results. There's some large difference between the different sites. :(

Why is it a disappointment? It's a monster for the money and makes the 780 and especially Titan seem stupidly overpriced.

Those extra ROPS are battering the Nvidia cards at silly resolutions, 290X is the card to have for multi-monitor gaming.

For those watching the TTL video, he whinges about the stock cooler for 10 mins before getting to the review.

He's gone down hill since he first started out..... Very biased now even though he claims not to be.... You can see his fanboyism shining through the BS.

That's such a niche market though (multi-monitor). It's a great price undoubtedly but the performance is a bit disappointing IMO.

I actually enjoyed reviewing this card. It was a bit of a roller coaster ride with so many positives and negatives. Many will be shocked at the 95c but AMD reassure is it is 100% safe. Shame the same can't be said for our hearing!

It's funny considering the hoo-hah the 95c got when it first leaked... going to be interesting what people say now it's a reality.

Gibbo said it operates at 85-90c in quiet mode. That would do me. You can always just turn that fan up in your want it cooler at the expense of noise, imo. Or you can wait for AIB cards.

I certainly wouldn't advise trying to remove the card shortly after a benchmarking session. Burn't my fingers on the damn thing!

Doesn't leave much overclocking headroom unless you're water cooling though. Going to be limited by temps and noise in reality. Custom cooled a while away too...

I would be surprised if the custom cooled varieties emerge before the 780Ti. The ball is now in NVIDIA's court. AMDs reply will be overclocked 290X's as per last time around with 7970 GHz edition.
