AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Are price drops likely for the 9800x3d given the launch of the 4090

I think, at the moment, the problem is the £. The 9800X3D is not that expensive in the USA, it's just that the pound is so weak right now that it's translating to expensive in the UK.

Having said that, if you wait a bit, I am absolutely certain the price will come down. Just depends on how long you want to wait.

I saw those, but they are from the USA. Not sure I would ever buy PC parts from another country. It's about as daft as buying new parts on ebay.
It a double edge sword. When the 7800gt and 8800 gtx was released I got a friend to but it from the us and ship it to me. But back then it was something like almost $2 to the £ or close to it.

I haven’t done it for quite a while.it all about the risk assessment/rewards.

I have also bought some stupidly outrageously expensive hi fi stuff from the US.

The problem with 9900X3D is only 6 cores on each CCD, paying for a worse product in most cases.

Same thing as the 7900X3D, it got most aggressive price cuts as worse for gaming than the 8 or 16 and productivity the regular 9950X will be better.

Is this a thing? I don’t how things worked on the previous gen’s of X3D
comparing the 7800X3D to the 7900X3D, the 7800X3D actually turns out to be the better CPU for gaming by a slight margin, because it has 8 cores that all benefit from the extra cache, while the 7900X3D has 12 cores, but divided into a 6+6 configuration, and only 6 cores can access the cache.

For this to function properly on the high core CPUs you need to make sure the AMD chipset drivers is installed for the 3D V cache to park the cores that are not using the X3D cache, game bar needs to be working, balanced power plan in Windows etc

So the 16 core 9950x3d should behave like 9800x3d with the added bonus of extra 8 cores for productivity when needed?

It depends on your workload requirements but yes, if you are gaming the software/scheduling should keep that on a single CCD. However, if you are running a workload that will use many threads, it will load all cores.

Where you see the performance dips is where the workload crosses the IO die.

I was considering going for the 9950x3d until checking this thread. initially wanted to go for the max of everything across the board including a 5090 but as above, it looks like the 9800x3d will be the purest and most hassle free chip to go for gaming wise with it just having one CCD. on top of that, not sure if i can hold out till march for the 9950x3d + it being hella pricey compared to the 9800x3d. usually upgrade every 4 years and im getting the itch bad already!

I've got cream for that

yep as ED209 below states you need the drivers balanced power game bar and it often breaks with windows updates/bios/firmware updates or whenever it feels like it. the 9950x3d should be best of both worlds but when I was using the last one it was such a pain (7950x3d).

Well its $479 in the US which equates to £400. Add vat = £480, compared to £540 it is actually retailing for here, so £60 (12.5%) more. You can buy them from the US at that price but get whacked with import tariffs.

Also exchange rates aside, it's such a high demand chip prices probably won't come down for maybe a year. There might a flash sale in June when it's rain forest week and if so other Uk retailers will probably cut prices to match. Also the 9950/990x3d's are looking like duds for gamers so their release in March are unlikely to reduce demand for the 9800x3d

Just noticed it's back in stock on ocuk. Quite tempted to take the plunge.

Unless purely gaming I find the price of them kind of silly, and even where they do show a difference at higher resolution/settings it is often fairly small for the price uplift over some other CPUs. Though if you do want all out FPS they can't be beaten.

It's the cpu that will last. Anything non x3d is disposable
