AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

I don't pretend to be an expert on the subject but when you install windows there is something called the hardware abstraction layer (HAL) where windows I guess the kernel(??) maps it's self to the architecture of you're CPU.

If you are switching between CPU's I'd always do a reformat.

I have never done a reformat simply for switching a CPU on the same mobo... sounds like BS to me unless I see some hard evidence.

Why don't you do the searching?

All I said is that windows builds a hal based on your hardware during installation.
it's not all you said... you said you would reformat every time you even only switch CPU's, which obviously implies its bad to not do it and thats why I was asking for evidence. I think it seems like it's just something you like to do, not something that is needed.

Woop woop it... booted! Not only that but I didn't reformat windows and it seems to have detected everything perfectly! :D

EXPO is working fine too, I just need to go and tweak now. Looking forward to some gaming tomorrow! :)

There was definitely ‘a thing’ some time back from switching from a 1 CCD to a 2 CDD cpu (or vice versa) that meant a windows reinstall was recommended, as I remember all the usual reviewers mentioning it.

Yeah here we go (I’ve linked to the part of the vid):

From 4:50

Summary: if you move from a 2 CCD chip to a 1 CCD chip, your 1 CDD chip will be ‘contaminated’ with the core parking from the 2 CCD chip, even if you are careful to avoid it.

This is actually one thing that makes me nervous about waiting and going for the 9950X3D, once I go dual CCD I'll need to reformat if I want to go back.
This is not a thing. I have at times regularly swapped CPUs (1CCD/2CCD), etc. OS is aware. Also there are options in UEFI which switch off CCD/SMT.
