AMD Six Core Prices and Clock Speeds Unearthed

/emote steps into the future
*5minutes later*
/emote returns from the future

about the same speed as in i7 but slightly faster in programs that can properly use 6 cores

Haha nice one, if as someone was stating they want to pay £150 then they won't be as quick, if however they are as good as an i7 expect to pay a similar price to one...

It will be interesting to see if OcUK get some hex in? . . . I have a feeling for one reason or another that AMD® are not getting a lot of love from the OcUK stock buyer? . . . I've asked them a few times now why they don't stock AMD® Athlon™ II X3 Triple Cores . . . probably the only tech seller in the U.K that doesn't :D . . . . can't think of any good reasons apart from they are deemed to not be a good seller (or good enough profit margin) or the Intel® "Mafia" have exerted some influence on things! :p

Well, I won't be joining the band wagon after all (in fact I've started a small project for my exisiting system instead, see Project: AirRAID in Case Central).

I hope these turn out really well and at a very competitive price :D

So . . . what programs / games will make use of 6 cores.

obviously none so far but if people dont upgrade often they might aswell be a bit future proof i'd imagine a few games will be able to use more than 4 cores by the second half of next year

i think we'll be seeing clock speeds in the order of 3.2-3.6 being the max overclocks. These processors are based on the same phenon II architecture and need to stay within certain thermal envelopes, so realistically i cant see them hitting 4ghz.

I think it'll need water cooling to see any decent clock speeds, any PhenomII at above 3.8ghz needs to max at around 55C in my opinion, otherwise no matter what the voltage it can't be made stable.

Big.Wayne I have also noticed that lack of AMD love from OcUK. I just don't think that AMD CPUs are as popular. I've always had intel as my main machine since PIII, but I just got an Asus Crosshair III Formula, so I'm ditching the Q6600 setup and moving on up. I'm glad Asus have now supported the new CPUs in this board. I love the fact AMD stick to one (or two) socket layouts that are surprisingly compatible.

I don't think I'll be getting a 6-core though, the only thing I tax the machine with is games, and so it seems a waste. I'm hoping this will push down prices of the Phenom II X4 955BE or 965BE so I can get one OC'd nicely on the new board. What do you think the chances of the price going down are? I may actually go second hand if there were many about.

I'll be selling my 965BE as soon as the Hex-cores are out mate ;) Tis like 2 months old and I'd be looking at £100 for it if poss.

Get your posts up and obtain access to the members market. (Read the FAQ). I'd be very interested in taking it off your hands then. What stepping?

Did I read that there was a 95W Phenom BE coming out soon?

EDIT: No I didn't. There's a 95W 955 though.

C3 mate. Runs 3.8 without breaking a sweat no problem so far (I havn't pushed further as it requires more volts equaling more heat in effect more fan noise - I run it with all fans on low and it just hits 45DegreesC under load (upto 48 under prime blend).

The hex-core's however will benefit the encoding i'm always doing these days - don't get much time for gaming so would defo see the benefit of thuban over deneb.

Sounds like a good chip. Those temps are awesome too, what voltage does it take for a stable 3.8 then?

EDIT: Don't worry, did my research, 1.45V.

1.45v mate - I've been having fun with my mainboard since BIOs upgrades though :(

Check the Phenom II overclocking thread for full 12hour+ prime95 blend stability test screenies ;)

PS - Them temps are low probably due to my Corsair H50-1 cooler.

REALLY looking forward to Thuban as that's what I bought my current setup in anticipation of :) Could have gone the i7 route but I refuse to buy intel - Please don't let us down AMD :)

I have a Noctua NH-U12F, and I asked in that thread if it'd be good enough, and appraently it should, but it struggles with my Q6600 @3.2 really. I think the noctua needs lapping, the surface really isn't that flat. I was going to replace it with a Thermalright Venomous X, but the AMD mounting bracket seems impossible to find in the UK! The Corsair is a bit more than I can justify paying, but you've really made it work well it seems. What case?

When should we expect general availability of the Thuban? It seems they're expected at the end of this month, but I guess getting them to retail and in your hand can take longer.

I've actually 'talked to' (in roundabout terms) somebody who's used one. They say it completely blows away Intel's competition (6 core wise).

Heh - [email protected] eh? funny you say that as that's exactly what I 'upgraded' from to my AMD setup :) With a scythe Ninja my Q6600 used to hit 62Degrees C under prime load!

Using an Antec 902 case - big super duper fan at top to draw out the heat and only one fan pulling in air from the rear of the case (not the ideal setup to be honest - I had better performance using two fans and blowing out of the rear exhaust instead of pulling - just cba pulling my system apart again lol!)

Can't find the FAQ for the trading section - didnt even realise there was a trading section here!

You reckon these X6's will boot in a board that hasn't been flashed to the latest bios yet?

I am planning to order the rest of the bits of my upgrade this week, but won't have a CPU to use in it until the X6's hit, as such won't be able to update the bios...
