AMD Six Core Prices and Clock Speeds Unearthed

dunno if they will hex - I know most motherboards that are compatible have already had new BIOSes released. Its VERY doubtful however you will recieve a new motherboard with the latest BIOS so i'd hazard a guess at no it won't work until the BIOS has been updated (maybe put in a special request to whoever you buy your mainbard from - i.e. It MUST be thuban compatible BEFORE shipping).

I've been excited about these since they were rumoured, but I'll be waiting on benches and until we see some actual in-store pricing before I finally decide whether to unlock and clock a dual or clock a quad or hex.

Hmm, that is rather annoying.

Well I've put in an order for a Asus M4A785TD-M Evo from OCUK, so I might fire them a note off to see if they can flash the latest BIOS for me.

Worth a go, otherwise I'm a bit scuppered, and just have to pray it will at least boot with an X6 in there!

Really don't want to have to order another CPU just to flash the board with =/

Well you could always try and pick up a cheap AM3 CPU from the MM. That should do the job right?

I'd give OcUK a call first, their support has always been good for me.

lol - I just noticed your in Hudds too dude! - If you can wait till I remove my CPU I can lend you that for a couple of hours so you can flash your BIOS if so required.

Just posted a request for the BIOS to be updated in the Order Support section, so I'll see what comes of that!

Otherwise, I might be taking you up on that offer zoomee :D

An i7 @ 4GHz should last more than a year.

And you are right, games are far more GPU dependent, however I want an X6 to play about with more than anything, it's something new :D

I totally don't need 6 cores, but it's shiny and new, and therefore I must have one :p

Well looks like OCUK can't update the BIOS for me :(

So fingers crossed they at least boot the X6's out the box and the BIOS update is just to enable Turbo etc. =/

or find a friendly local member with a cpu that is known to work and flash, if you were local you could bring your board to mine and stick my x2 in to flash :)

Good points about the Bios updates, not sure I'll have the cash by the time the X6 launch so there might be some boards available with updated Bios by then. One to watch out for though for retailers especially for people looking to upgrade from a pretty ancient system...

Any one know if the Asus Crosshair III Formula AMD 790FX AM3 motherboard will support these? :)

AM2+ chipsets are going to be able to run Thuban so all your going to need is a BIOS upgrade.

So . . . what programs / games will make use of 6 cores.

Napoleon Total War can use 6 threads although no where near 100%, it's about 75% on core 1 and 15-20% on the other 5 cores from a review I've seen. I don't know if you play this game or not but if you play this game with lots of men on the battlefield the game will need more phyiscs, AI, path finding all of which will demand more from the CPU so expect the CPU usage to go up.

obviously none so far but if people dont upgrade often they might aswell be a bit future proof i'd imagine a few games will be able to use more than 4 cores by the second half of next year
Will be interesting to see IF all 6 cores are utilised in Dirt 2, seen as it's a DX11 game, all new DX11 games are supposed to use all available cores. It's built into the drivers.

Also from another forum thread I asked this question, some programs to test with Thuban.
