AMD Technology at GDC

Sorry should have posted this here, not in the Mantle thread!!

BIG NEWS!!

CRYENGINE To Support Mantle, AMD Gets Another Endorsement

While I do not have too many details otherwise, Crytek and AMD have announced that mainline CRYENGINE will support the Mantle graphics API. CRYENGINE, by Crytek, now sits alongside Frostbite, by Dice, and Nitrous, by Oxide Games, as engines which support that alternative to DirectX and OpenGL. This comes little more than a week after their announcement of native Linux support with their popular engine.

Crytek has been "evaluating" the API for quite some time now, showing interest back at the AMD Developer Summit. Since then, they have apparently made a clear decision on it. It is also not the first time that CRYENGINE has been publicly introduced to Mantle, with Chris Robert's Star Citizen, also powered by the 4th Generation CRYENGINE, having announced support for the graphics API. Of course, there is a large gap between having a licensee do legwork to include an API and having the engine developer provide you supported builds (that would be like saying UnrealEngine 3 supports the original Wii).

Hopefully we will learn more as GDC continues.

Editor's (Ryan) Take: said:
As the week at GDC has gone on, AMD continues to push forward with Mantle and calls Crytek's implementation of the low level API "a huge endorsement" of the company's direction and vision for the future. Many, including myself, have considered that the pending announcement of DX12 would be a major set back for Mantle but AMD claims that is "short sited" and as more developers come into the Mantle ecosystem it is proof AMD is doing the "right thing."

Here at GDC, AMD told us they have expanded the number of beta Mantle members dramatically with plenty more applications (dozens) in waiting. Obviously this could put a lot of strain on AMD for Mantle support and maintenance but representatives assure us that the major work of building out documentation and development tools is nearly 100% behind them.

If stories like this one over at Semiaccurate are true, and that Microsoft's DirectX 12 will be nearly identical to AMD Mantle, then it makes sense that developers serious about new gaming engines can get a leg up on projects by learning Mantle today. Applying that knowledge to the DX12 API upon its release could speed up development and improve implementation efficiency. From what I am hearing from the few developers willing to even mention DX12, Mantle is much further along in its release (late beta) than DX12 is (early alpha).

AMD indeed was talking with and sharing the development of Mantle with Microsoft "every step of the way" and AMD has stated on several occasions that there were two outcomes with Mantle; it either becomes or inspires a new industry standard in game development. Even if DX12 is more or less a carbon copy of Mantle, forcing NVIDIA to implement that API style with DX12's release, AMD could potentially have the advantage of gaming performance and support between now and Microsoft's DirectX release. That could be as much as a full calendar year from reports we are getting at GDC.

Exclusive: AMD's Matt Skynner Talks New Crytek Partnership, Mantle's 'Beacon Of Leadership'

When I last spoke with AMD’s Matt Skynner (Corporate VP and GM of Graphics Business Unit) in September 2013, he didn’t sound quite this elated. Then again, the Sunnyvale company hadn’t yet launched their Hawaii graphics cards. Nor had the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 been released, both of which feature semi-custom AMD APUs. Nor had they partnered with powerhouse game studio DICE on their Mantle API. Skynner and company have had a productive few months, and at the 2014 Game Developer’s Conference they’re continuing that momentum.

Today finds AMD formally partnering with German video game developer Crytek. The company pledges to integrate AMD’s Mantle API into Cryengine, a graphics engine that powers technical showcases like Crysis 3 for PC and Ryse for Xbox one.

(Mantle is what’s known as a low-level API, and it gives game developers “closer-to-the-metal” access to the PC hardware they’re developing for. It streamlines communication between a gamer’s CPU and GPU. Essentially this results in significant performance uplifts when compared to DirectX 11 on AMD hardware. You can read more about Mantle in AMD’s words via this blog post.)

I linked to this news aggggeesss ago, well, a couple hours :p

I'm half glad and half sad GDC stuff isn't streamed, glad because 80% of forums seem to think developer conferences should be all about delivering information to consumers and act like things said at them are "launches" and indicate final release dates if people indicate a time frame for anything. People take them too seriously as if they are official press releases. However if you can not stick your boot in to ever comment ever made and are actually interested in the tech, they can be very very interesting.

But GDC won't get streamed because unlike say AMD yearly APU dev conference, this is a paid for event. Paid for events will rarely if ever be screened otherwise the people putting them together don't get paid because no one would actually go. Hope to see the best information on youtube, I'm not sure if there will be a delay on when AMD can post such talks on youtube, might be a "you can't post this for 2 days/2 weeks/2 months", don't know.

Should get some decent write ups fairly quickly on tech sites of the most relevant stuff, but they often miss out huge chunks of interesting stuff and focus on a few basic but easily explainable things :(

Interesting news, will be intriguing to see how far Crytek will go with support for Mantle in CryEngine. It seems they really want to branch into every available avenue of expansion for them, given that they announced that they will extend CryEngine to Linux distributions and that GameWorks is being added to their title "Warface". Very clever of them, and I welcome game companies to expand into every opportunity that comes about - gives them a wider variety of platforms to develop for, extends their knowledge and will, undoubtedly, increase their profits.

In other news...

Anyone remember Frosty saying Mantle SDK will never be available? :p

No, they are turning away dev's in a obvious and public statement that Mantle will fail because they flat out refuse to distribute it.

I believe he stated that if it's not distributed in the next 6 -11 months(no idea where those numbers came from) it would fail and was using lots of quotes about AMD saying they WOULD release an SDK soon as "evidence" that they weren't going to distribute an SDK soon.

IIRC I've been saying that AMD said since december that Mantle is alpha, they'll release a beta in April and were planning a final version 1.0 and public release towards the end of the year, oct/nov..... and wow, AMD say April for Mantle beta program and getting more devs on board and making the SDK more widely available.

But apparently AMD have been making lots of promises and lying to everyone, the same way that according to Frosty AMD spent the whole Hawaii launch talking about Mantle...... or more accurately, the last minute of a 2 hour stream...

I think most people can see Frosty's agenda, his loose relationship with logic and consistent bashing of AMD while ignoring all the proof to the contrary of everything he says.

GPU PerfStudio2 analyzing live bf4 build running mantle apparently. Yeah, no idea either. #getyournerdon

Not sure if you are missing it on purpose but selected access only doesnt mean "Open" by any standard.

As for the childish gif, was there any need for that?

Its a briggin gif at the announcement of Mantle becoming public after the Mantle Beta.

Are we expecting anything new from the green or red teams in terms of actual cards around end of May/June time? Thinking my 770 may need an upgrade for Watchdogs and the like :)

No bud and I feel WatchDogs will run fine on a 770. Time will tell as they say :)
