AMD To Launch Radeon R-200 Series?

Priced a little below the 780GTX ..... I'd expect performance in the same ball park with a reasonable OC capability.

250W TDP .... no wonder it's called volcanic isle.... makes sense for a 1Ghz 28nm card to be thermally limited. should be interesting on water with a decent VRM.

The fire at the Hynix fabs 1 and 2 will probably greatly effect prices as well, even though the reports are now coming in that the damage isn't as bad as first feared.

i doubt that tbh - if the cards are meant to be coming out next month they must have such a great stockpile of cards ready for sale that the fire at hynix is too late to affect launch prices imho

If they are shipping via container too that can take some time, so you would like to think they have already been assembled.

If it's a 780 'value' option then how boring is that :(
If it offers GTX780 performance at under £400, I don't think anyone care about boring :p

But if the pass is anything to go by, AMD would probably launch it at same price bracket as the GTX780, and then quickly drop price in the 3 months after onward (while Nvidia would budge on the pricing for the GTX780).

So if this is indeed correct that would mean that AMD intended to build this card nearly two years ago and only now decide to bring it to market.

I'd mentioned this a few times, the shader count is that of the sapphire tech sheet we saw early 2012? :p
I've been mentioning it for the last few months since the rumours started, why have people only started to twig now :p?

Wasn't the R200 the Radeon 8500 and its rebrands? are they just planning to reuse the name and hope nobody notices? :confused:

The cards aren't going to be named "AMD Radeon R2XX" though. The new naming will be slighty more confusing ...

They are going to be named "AMD Radeon RX YZZ" with Y being the generation, X being the model, and ZZ being the sub-model (I think this is correct).

E.g.,

9950 (what would have been anyway) = AMD Radeon R9 280

If you applied the naming format to the current 7XXX generation of cards,

7970 = AMD Radeon R9 185
7950 = AMD Radeon R9 180
7870 = AMD Radeon R8 175
7850 = AMD Radeon R8 170

Or something along those lines. Although it's pretty obvious the consumer base will just use the last value when discussing a card (e.g. using 280 to refer to AMD Radeon R9 280, much like using 7950 to refer to AMD Radeon HD 7950)

a two year cycle for GPUs would suit me fine.

As much as I welcome progress its getting silly how quickly new cards are turned out.

It would be nice to know where you stand for a year and a bit and not have anything new come out!

Well, OcUK are using the 780/Titans in their new flagship 8-pack systems instead of waiting just a few short weeks for the new AMD cards. Take that as you will ;)

Our AMD samples have not arrived yet and our 8Pack system had a set launch date.

Of course we can update the specification at any time and were expecting our AMD samples very soon. :)

Though I have to say with the current 7990 crazy pricing, they are truly unbeatable for the money. ;)

AMD Volcanic Islands Could Possibly Be Called Radeon R-200 Series

Since the emergence of the reports about Volcanic Islands, there has been a lot of confusion built up around the codenames that the new GPU family would use. Some said Radeon HD 8000 series which ended up as an OEM only series, then there was speculation regarding the new GPUs using the Radeon HD 9000 series but then came reports from VR-Zone that the AMD Volcanic Islands would be using an entirely different naming scheme. Later on Semiaccurate did a detailed analysis revealing that the codename could possibly end up as R9-XXXX, R8-XXXX. The ‘R’ here denotes the Radeon brand, ’9′ denotes the tier of the model in this case being the high-end part and the XXXX is the branding number. The final codename was supposed to look something like R9-9970 and we have already seen a similar branding scheme by AMD in their APU and FX series lineup such as the FX-9590 and A10-6800.

The latest reports regarding the codenames come from Techpowerup (via Videocardz). The Techpowerup’s GPU database got updated a few weeks ago and listed what could be the possible series branding of the AMD Volcanic Islands family. The TPU GPU database has listed the new R-200 Series (Volcanic Islands), this is the successor to the Radeon HD 7000 Series (Southern Islands). All of a sudden the new naming scheme sounds confusing but a generation or two, we will get used to it. The current flagship Radeon HD 7900 series cards based on the Tahiti architecture would be replaced by the R9-200 series cards based on the Hawaii architecture. The R-200 series would be split into R9-2** (Replacing HD 7900 Series), R8-2** (Replacing HD 7800 Series), R7-2** (Replacing HD 7700 series) and so on.

To our surprise, the R7-2** series listed under the GPU database showcases the GPU series featuring the Cape Verde core which seems to confirm the previous report that other than the Hawaii based cards, the rest of the lineup could probably end up as modified Southern Islands chips. The Hawaii based cards are listed under the R9-2** series with three parts, Hawaii XT, Hawaii Pro, Hawaii LE while the flagship dual GPU would be codenamed R9-290 and would be codenamed Tonga based on dual Hawaii GPUs. Videocardz came up with a chart which gives a simplified representation of the series under their respective performance tiers:

Radeon HD 7000

Radeon R-200

Radeon R-300

AMD Radeon HD 7990

AMD Radeon R9 290

AMD Radeon R9 390

AMD Radeon HD 7970

AMD Radeon R9 285

AMD Radeon R9 385

AMD Radeon HD 7950

AMD Radeon R9 280

AMD Radeon R9 380

AMD Radeon HD 7870

AMD Radeon R8 275

AMD Radeon R8 375

AMD Radeon HD 7850

AMD Radeon R8 270

AMD Radeon R8 370

AMD Tonga Dual-Chip – R9-290 Replacing AMD Malta Radeon HD 7990
AMD Hawaii Flagship – R9-200 Replacing AMD Tahiti Radeon HD 7900

In addition to the desktop AMD Volcanic Islands codenames, the database also lists a few upcoming mobile GPUs known as the R-M200 Series which would fall in line with the upcoming Crystal Series mobility graphic chipsets. On the other hand, the R2 and R3 series graphics chips would be integrated on the APUs as revealed by Semi-accurate through a leaked catalyst driver which first mentioned the Hawaii as a discrete flagship desktop part month’s back.

At the end of the day, whatever AMD ends up calling their next generation Volcanic Islands graphic cards, it would be their performance and value that really matters to the consumers. The AMD Volcanic Islands series is going to be showcased in an event in Hawaii during the last week of September followed by mass shipment in early October 2013 and retail availability by Mid-late October 2013.

Aww, that's utter crap, then. All but the top cards are going to be re-brands? Wish I'd bought a 7950 now :/
