AMD to turn the tables on Intel in CPU race?

I wanted to upgrade from my 2500k for crossfire 7950s.

Looked at Ivy and Haswell, looked at a 2700k, price, performance, lol, second hand 2700k it is!

Yes, Intel top end smash it, but they aren't really needed, and if AMD can pull more performance with Mantle, and keep their significant price difference to Intel chips, it could make things interesting.

2700K is still a beast, fond memories of mine, was a monster of a clocker :D

We'll wait until Mantle's out, but the i3 is going to get a boost in performance, it's not going to go backwards now is it? I didn't say it'd be competitive neither.

It may do in fact. Run too many threads in parallel that depend each other on the same core and you can end up with significantly worse performance. Even threads that have little relation, e.g. if you run a parallel compilation with 8 processes/threads on a dual core CPU it will take longer than if you ran with 2-3.

AMD bringing Mantle support to Kaveri, 2-4 threaded CPU's.

We'll really have to see really.

I don't know that AMD has said Mantle will work efficiently with any particular CPUs, only that it aims to use multiple cores efficiently. It's a safe assumption that 4 cores will be a minimum recommendation if there are no hard requirements.

It is safe to presume (this is pre-conference as I have not read or watched any of it) that mantle will help those games supported by alleviating the 'bottleneck' when it comes to CPU grunt (shift to GPU - whatever).

Going back a few weeks a certain select would highlight the poor performance of the FX cpu's regarding bottleneck and like-for-like clockspeeds (IPC etc). This is pretty much what I (and probably a few others) was waiting for as should it even be half as useful as it is portraying, then all the i5 is the way err discussions would be raising a wee smile on.

As ever though, the proof will be in the pudding.
