As we all knew....terrible IPC per core (relative to Intel), very good (relative to Intel) GPU performance.

HTPC...perfect choice, anything else get an Intel and cheap discrete GPU.

In some cases I'd say the unlocked dual core will steal away some market of the Pentiums with their IGP and clocking ability for not much more (And cheaper than some of the Pentiums)

It's also good for people who have such a tight budget for a gaming PC spec (£250'ish).

Think of the bigger picture, these are the cores going into Vishera, sure they'll be given L3 cache, but Phenom II is still the best CPU performance AMD has given us.

Phenom II is over 3 years old now.

For that reason I'm not impressed at all with their CPU side.
If anything, Vishera's going to be a high clocking Phenom II.

Yeah I can see what your saying mate, I think AMD's high end desktop chips may be doomed for failure as per Bulldozer was. For budget PC's however these Trinity chips look awesome for the money, you could buy a board + 5800K for around £150, throw on a £30 Antec Kuhler 620 and reach 5Ghz easily.. Cheap gaming system.. From that perspective AMD is on to a winner. High end chips are Intel's territory for now...

You don't know if you can reach 5GHZ easily, Rawz said 4.6GHZ, and reviews are around that.

It's like the whole i5 can do 5GHZ again, which it failed to do so consistently.

Although I agree with the sentiment it can be a good budget option, more so next generation, I hope it'll remove the pathetic entry level GPU's we get given.

Still doesn't look great IPC wise:

Probably about 10% slower clock for clock compared to Deneb if you take into account turbo core. Having said that, the multithreaded performance is pretty good given that these aren't true quad core chips and lack L3 cache (the lack of shared cache full stop is a major drawback) Have to see the pricing on the fx-6xxx processors and we might FINALLY see a new AMD chip that actually beats the old ones.

This gives a fair idea about the difference L3 cache makes for identical architectures:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/105?vs=81

which is about a 5-15% difference.

That's with the stock cooler? Take a look at all the reviews, 5GHZ will be easy with even a budget water cooler or high end air cooler.

They do look like great lil budget chips, I want one to test it out lol.

The next APU's will hopefully be on 22nm and offer more of a performance boost...

Yeah I think most reached 4.4 - 4.6 with stock cooler? (Which looks naff tbh). Under a cheap water cooler or high end air these things should clock really well.

Personally I think they look great. The balance between GPU and CPU is much better on the AMD side of the tracks and the price difference will probably get you an SSD (which will make a bigger real world performance difference in most usage) or save your money, as you'd want to with a budget PC.

Sadly the upgrade path to the mid to high range requires both a new motherboard and CPU. Personally I wouldn't buy Intel for the average person if you could take a £40 motherboard from Trinity to Piledriver.

I'd be hesitant to say untill we have reviews under water as temps may not be the only limiting factor. There has only been a short article about 6ghz on ln2 so far with not much detail, so it's too early to say much about its oc potential.

Really impressed with the 5800K tbh, seems on a par with the old Phenom II x4 965 Black edition for CPU performance + an Nvidia GTX 640.. All for under £100. I wanna build a Trinity rig just to have a play with one lol. See if I can break 5Ghz OC :p

5800K VS Phenom II X4 965 BE

hhmmm, a 3.8Ghz 2M Trinity on parr with a 4 core 3.4Ghz Phenom II.

That's a lot more than the FX-4100 was.

Anyway, reading now...

Ok, The CPU performance is still not on a Parr with the i3, but there are significant gains toward it.

Quite significant is it beats out or matches the much higher clocked FX-4170 http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/amd-a10-5800k_6.html#sect1

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/amd-a10-5800k_8.html#sect0

So it looks like there are significant improvements on the Piledriver cores vs the Bulldozer cores.

And 4.4 - 4.6Ghz on the stock cooler is also very significant, that's much better overclocking than Bulldozer, it bodes well for getting high clocks on a 20 - £30 cooler.

So far so good.

Edit; having said "not on parr with the i3" in some real life apps it is http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/a10-5800k-trinity-efficiency,3315.html
