AMD: Update for Catalyst 14.1 Beta, Battlefield 4 patch and Mantle API

@Warsam71, I know that it'll have been dictated top down, probably after so much negative feedback from users of GCN 1.0 cards, but AMD really should have released the GCN 1.1 version of the Mantle driver and followed up with additional 14.1 beta updates to include GCN 1.0 support.

If it's a show stopper bug with GCN 1.0 then the last thing that should be done is attempt to flog the engineers into working longer and faster to hack the bug out. It's not a long term solution and it usually takes 2.5x as long for the solution to be implemented when people are tired and stressed.

Whoever made the cockup of a decision to try and get Mantle out for all GCN in two days likely didn't consult the actual engineers themselves when they made the call. Engineers will always give three timeframes, at least, for stuff like this. One will be if the stars align and everything goes perfectly, the second is the best guess as the realistic earliest time to expect a resolution and thirdly the absolute longest that it should take.

Some idiots in management jump on the earliest figure and think that they can force that to happen, and if it passes they think that they can jump on the team and flog them harder to get the issue resolved sooner. It almost never happens like that though because stress and tiredness inhibit the the cognitive processes required to get the problem resolved.

Hello everyone,

I’m pretty sure most of you are aware the Battlefield 4 patch has been launched today; and I just wanted to take a moment to provide you an update on said subject. As you may know this new patch is automatically installed on systems that already have Battlefield 4 installed. That being said, in order to take advantage of the Mantle API and experience the performance increase, you will need to meet the following prerequisites:

1. Have a GCN (Graphics Core Next) based GPU in your system
2. Install the latest Battlefield 4 patch from Origin (installed automatically)
3. Install the latest graphics driver, the AMD Catalyst 14.1 Beta (coming soon)

With the above in place, you’ll be ready and Mantle will be enabled

Also, the upcoming AMD Catalyst 14.1 Beta driver will support all desktop Graphic Core Next (GCN) products, though we are working with EA to further optimize performance on 280X, 270X, HD-7000 and HD-8000 series GPUs. In addition, we’re giving the press time to exclusively test the beta driver while we implement the finishing touches on all the features you can expect from the Catalyst 14.1 Beta driver.

Please keep in mind that 14.1 is a beta driver and your feedback is very important to us; once it’s launched, you may report any bugs or issues by using our official reporting form: www.amd.com/betareport

I will make sure to keep you up to date, and provide you the link to the driver as soon as it’s available (which is more likely going to be here: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Thank you very much for your patience

Mantle performance for the AMD Radeon™ HD 7000/HD 8000 Series GPUs and AMD Radeon™ R9 280X and R9 270X GPUs will be optimized for BattleField 4™ in future AMD Catalyst™ releases. These products will see limited gains in BattleField 4™ and AMD is currently investigating optimizations for them.

Not gutted here I have nice gains. Frame rate seems very smooth also, its like I have increased my DPI.

Wow!
How smooth is this? feels like I have changed my mouse DPI, even Alt Tab out the game is swift.

Had to use my phone for the Mantle Screenshot, in game screenshot dont seem to be working and no RadeonPro support atm.

Very nice gains on my setup and Full Ultra

Superb! Getting incredible results so far, from both oxide demo and BF4 MP full server :D

During BF4 gameplay, I get a stutter once in a while, a huge sipke in cpu graph, just like it happened during CES 2014 but not twice like when right after the guy says "this looks great" but once of that spike and image seems to get frozen for a second. Will it be fixed? What is the cause? Does this happen for all R9 290Xs (my cpu is fx 8350 and stock)

with a 280x
my fps dropped from 100-144 to 17-45 for a few seconds a couple of times in the few mins I played.

gpu mem usage never went over 2800mb.

I've had a two screen flickers for a split second just browsing the net as well.
I think it's just firefox window though and not my taskbar as well but I have hardware acceleration unchecked in firefox , so wouldn't expect the gpu to effect it

@Warsam71 Hmm strange, a forum poster said that he also got those spikes and image freezes that last couple seconds when 4xMSAA is selected, and WHEN he truns it off those spikes do not occur; and I had 2xMSAA and no Post AA at Ultra options when I had those spikes... Will try turning AA off completely and give it a go, but now I need to sleep it's 7 am in the morning and I haven't slept :O

Please, use the our official reporting form (www.amd.com/betareport). It's the best way to provide your feedback to our Beta team.

PS. I'm going to install the beta driver in a little while (need to grab some dinner now - I'm in the US - California). I've been playing BF4 for a couple of weeks now, I'm hooked, and looking forward to see how it works on my rig too :-)

I currently own an nvidia card. But it's great to see posts like this from vendors. Shows that extra bit of customer care and service.

Keep up the good work

3 Months late and still released with issue that include huge lags spikes and black screens...:o

Good old AMD/ATI. Really hope they get these issues sorted. Could be the kick up the backside NVIDIA need and the injection of performance the gaming side could do with.

I was going to pick up a 290 if this offered the performance AMD was claiming.
Ill pass till they sort the teething problems out. By now I'd have expected the launch to go smooth. Its not like its been rushed out. They have missed numerous release dates already.

Go whine somewhere else, come here WHEN and IF you have an amd card.

This looks like just what my poor little i5 could do with. Can't wait for it to get out of beta and it's final polish.

Not noticing much improvement with my 270x, maybe a little smoother, still around 40fps with my i3.

The HDMI issue is still not fixed.

Not sure if you missed my previous post Warsam but is this likely to be fixed soon?
