Hi folks, i am looking to build a new pc and since its 6 years since i last did it advice is required .
Having looked at a few posts on here i have came to the conclusion that Intel are the favoured CPU.
Intel Core i7-3770K 3.50GHz (Ivybridge) v Amd FX-8350 Eight Core Black Edition CPU The new AMD cpu seems like a better buy but like i say been out of toutch .
Ok so i want a pc for mainly HD video editing/rendering , was wanting an ssd hard drive + 1tb sata 3 ,Asus mb,16 gig ram, decent psu, a cheap case will do as it will never be seen , i have a GForce GTX 550 TI that is new and never been used , and as for cooling i aint got a clue .
Thanks for any info , help in choosing the right components .

whats your budget, and tbh it all depends on what your using the pc for, i'd spec both, and most would be happy with either, anyone who say's anything else are just fanboys of one make or another, both have there good and bad points, and without both there would be no one to keep prices down so we all would be paying more for them

so budget first, then post what parts you need and what you don't need etc k/b mouse o/s etc monitor etc etc then what your using it for, and we can start from there :)

I wouldn't be happy with an FX8350, I'm on a 120HZ screen, I want every last frame.
That doesn't make me a fanboy.

Bad form Zak.

yea what ever, i'm using a i7 for gaming atm, a 4170 for app/s music and video/photo stuff, an old dual core Wolfdale chip for 24/7 net use / utorrent etc

a i5 laptop, so have almost the complete set :)

horses for courses tbh, it all depends on what your doing on it and your budget, so again i'm very very happy to spec either :)

I don't mind spec'ing either for someone else, but I wouldn't get myself one because they can't offer what I require.
Spec to requirement, forget the brand name behind it.

You can't say anyone who says they wouldn't be happy with the either is a fanboy, because it's far from that black/white.
If I put down ~250ish of a 3770k, I'd expect more from it than what it could put out.

Now, if anything im more of a fanboy for AMD, but when comparing the 8350 and 3770k to me its obvious that Intel will shomp 'em up the wazzoo.

But when it comes to 8350 and the 3570k you can compare, i understand for gaming (At the moment) the 3570k is the way to go. But with the 8350 being somewhat cheaper, it really comes down to whether you will think you the Price/Performance ratio is worth it.

Since you say you will be rendering, the 8350 is pretty good for that. But as long as you don't regret passing up on a 3770k.

Well, purely on gaming performance standpoint, recommending FX8 over i5 is pretty much as bad as recommending Nvidia card over AMD card at the same price points

It's just silly to get a CPU that's slower at gaming, when the rival offer better performance for simliar price...yet every time someone say "go Intel", they get ganged and get called Intel fanboy by a certain group of people.

Yeah fair play, but i've seen a fair few posts about FX8 being better at lower res and with games adopting more cores, it may be worth considering.

He says his system is for editing and rendering, so if he takes that as his main priority, why would he buy a cpu thats better for gaming?

Im not saying its off the cards by any means, but if i wanted a rendering rig i would buy a cpu for rendering and any gaming aspect of it would be a bonus, rather than the other way round.

If rendering took a priority over gaming for the OP, then definitely the FX8320 route, and then more money into better GPU.

I haven't seen any evidence of an FX8 being faster at low resolution, the contrary in fact.

I may be incorrect then, im not too sure. I thought i saw a video about a man comparing the 8350, 3570k and 3770k, he ran it on crysis and other games at strange res and the 8350 pulled more frames, it may have been other factors and im just a bit miffed. I had a quick search for the thread but i cannot remember it.

Come to think of it, I actually blindly recommended FX-8350 over i5 3570K for people that said they prioritise encoding/editing over gaming quite a few times, purely because everyone says it is faster than the i5 for those sort of thing...but now that I thought about it...the FX8 have much lesser overclock headroom than the i5...so if both were clock to say...4.6GHz, how much performance difference is there between the two CPUs?

Oh *That Video*.
One of those "some random dude who is incapable of properly doing a like for like benchmark comparison" video? :p

bump, still waiting for poster for info and mainly budget? as thread seems to be going a bit off topic, even though i might have started it off :(

sorry about that

Guys the AMD cpu is nearly £100 cheaper than the Intel and i dont play games like i said i am well out of date with components . My price range will be around £500-£600 , I have a new never used G Force 550GTX TI so i hope it will do .
Parts needed
MB Prefer an Asus
CPU
Ram x 16 gig
ssd 120gb
1tb sata 3 hdd
Case not bothered as it will never be seen cheaper the better
Half decent psu
No op system required or monitor ,keyboard either .

You've picked two CPU's that aren't meant to be directly compared.
If you're not gaming, then just get an FX8320.
GTX550 is pretty poor tbh.
