AMD VEGA confirmed for 2017 H1

Doing that would have given too much info away and allowed Nvidia to gauge Vega's performance and give them time to formulate how to respond or not respond, Basically they want to keep them clueless and on their toes.

I am not convinced that's actually a reason. Coming out with a card, a new generation, coming out with anything better takes a long time, a lot of R&D and huge budgets.

Nobody is going to rely on gauging some idea of performance out of a show, that's not practical at all.

NVidia may or may not have something up their sleeves but you can be sure they haven't been idle since their launches 6 months ago. Plus R&D and production are two different things anyway.

I just hope that both companies keep delivering the goods especially since we are getting closer to decent 4K and still need the raw power which doesn't cost a hand and a leg.

I know it is a daft question but if Vega is as quick as some people are making out why are AMD using Pascal Titans to demo their Ryzen CPU v a 6900k on BF1 ?

I can understand using the fastest GPU available to expose a CPU bottleneck on the 6900k which runs @3.2ghz compared to Ryzen @3.4ghz+.

AMD doing the above though means they are saying they have nothing close to the Pascal Titan ATM to do the job with.

This could all change though very quickly if AMD have faster GPUs in the pipeline that are not quite ready yet.

Let's look at it from another point of view.
AMD could be using the XP because they want to keep nvidia thinking about its VEGA line up.
It plays into AMD ball park them not showing there fastest GPU.
Maybe AMD want to keep something hidden to take on Titan XP and 1080ti what if the VEGA GPU shown so far is only the little brother?

Or it could very well just be AMD won't be looking at Titan XP at all.

Tarinder over on Hexus estimated the Vega10 die was around 460MM2 which is slightly smaller than the GP102 die which is 471MM2. Now it does appear Vega10 is less orientated towards FP64 performance which should help with regards to gaming, but I suspect the main issue here is clockspeeds and yields on GF 14NM.

You only have to look at Polaris 10 and Polaris 11,as they had multiple revisions to get them production ready and the RX460 is not a fully enabled part.

460MM2 would be around double the size of Polaris 10,and it took nearly two years since AMD moved onto 28NM to produce Hawaii which was 438MM2. It has not been nearly that long for them since they first started using 14NM!!

There is zero advantage to combining both ryzen and vega in a demo if you are trying to demo your new CPU arch.

Combine 2 unknowns to leave everyone a little more confused and open to further speculation. I mean why on earth would you shoot yourself in the foot if you do not have to.

True - people already have the Titan X out there,so its easier for people to see how good(or bad) the CPU is based on that I suppose.

well perhaps, but then combining your CPU with the absolute best GPU money can get won't tell a real story either. It could be an absolute monster, overclocked to hell and back. Doesn't mean you, as a real user with a consumer grade card will get anywhere near that performance. They could have paired it with a 480 for example, that would have given us a better platform to compare. or a 1070 ... you are much more likely to find people with a 1070 than people with a titan.

Great answer... Clearly some ppl come here to throw **** on amd everyway/anyway possible

The game seems to fluctuate from 55fps to 85fps depending on amount of action on screen. I found a Portugeuse video with a bit longer playthrough and it appears to average 70fps. The cpu speed is unknown too so we don't know if the clockspeed is actually boosting to 4GHz or not. If it's locked to 3.4GHz then it is impressive I guess.

Yeah but as i said, thats running in Vulkan, which gives AMD a big boost, so we should be knocking about 20+ fps off, for when its not used. :p

Not to mention i see this being consistently thrown around. They was on Un-optimised Furyx drivers which is in no way made for vega which is a new arch and has the most architectural changes since GCN was introduced since 79xx series. This can affect performance in many different ways and its not even GCN now? Its NCU?

Yup, got to show it at its best, so at its best, its about a 1080, only in Vulkan :D

Unfortunately for both companies really, quite a few people are now smart enough to not trust anything coming out of them.

We cannot wait to see the actual cards in the hands of the people, analyse the real numbers and all the other bits we love fighting over. Then we can see what's what and really have a go at each other :)

Why ppl forget that amd also demoed Battlefront in 4k with Vega..

yeah and they paired it with a Titan-X. I wonder what possible reason there could be instead of doing that with a ... say their own 480...
there is a lot of ... uhm ... stuff being thrown at us ... hopefully everyone knows to duck every now and then.

Uhmm no they also tested it with Vega at the end
